Agates of the Southwest: What's Inside?

- I don't often see a lot of videos on rockhounding New Mexico. New Mexico is a rockhound paradise! It's helpful to me, as a rockhound, to see rocks as they look in the rough before I rockhound an area so that I can learn what to look for. So, what do the agates in New Mexico look like rough? What do the inside of the agates found in the southwestern deserts of the United States look like? Well come along and see! These are several of the rocks I found during a recent visit to southern New Mexico. If you are lucky enough to visit New Mexico, here are a couple links to resources for rockhounding:
The Deming Gem and Mineral Society is AWESOME. Deming, NM is a rockhound paradise. I found these folks to be spectacular people! They are super knowledgeable and friendly. They have a great place in Deming with wonderful specimens. Check out their website and reach out to them with any questions you may have:

Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: I just re-watched this video. I'm more familiar with finding and working agates from New Mexico and Arizona than I am in Montana. Seeing you slab these agates brings back great memories. Thank you from an old fossil who can't get out there anymore!
I also love the new acquisitions to your rock and mineral collection!
All hail MRM and Drogon! 🐲
The material in New Mexico is some of my favorite rocks from anywhere on earth! It's really diverse and can be quite colorful and unique. It's some of my favorite stuff to investigate under a microscope 🔬 😋! I need another trip back there 😁
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: You always provide beautiful videos. Always a treat to start my day with you!!!
We love rockhounding around Deming. Their small rock and gem show always has the best rocks. We have rockhound all over the state. We always have fun and get lots beautiful rocks. You and Drogon, outdid yourselves. Super, super cuts. Thank you for sharing some of New Mexico's finest. Be happy, safe and stay healthy 🤠😷⚒
I am in deming for a while. I’ve been to rock hound park. Any other recommendations?
@@senorlaverg6667 I usually just wander the desert and see what the float brings. We look for pieces not much bigger than pendants. Lots of fun stuff stuff around. Good Luck!
Glad your doing ok Kim 🙂 I was thinking you were on vacation from CZcams for a lil bit and all those new Mexico agates are beautiful 🤩 I love Mexican crazy lace it's one of my favorites.
I'd have to say crazy lace is up there for me too! Yeah, been having some health stuff. On the mend now though!
I spent a few months in Deming for work. Totally agree that it’s paradise for Rockhounds. Every weekend I filled my backpack at rockhound park and would also frequent the shops in town and Lordsburg. Found a cool desert Jasper spot just north of town too. Think I drove back with over 400 lbs of rock.
You keep your Dragoon so clean! Awesome you'll have it forever. I need to get one of these. I've been a Plein Air Painter for 20+ Years and studied in Taos for many years. I often rockhounded the areas I went. I moved to California several years ago and I'm painting on location and rockhounding out here. What a mind explosion this state is. Love your Videos/channel. You give me such great inspiration to explore more.
Glad you feel better. Those are amazing rocks, the patterns are mindblowing. Wish we could see some of them with your microscope. Maybe next time?
There are so many beautiful patterns that would make great pendants and earrings !
11:47 makes you think of the Amazon from above the clouds - stunning
I am so glad you are well, heal and mend, bless you and yours....
You are genuinely delighted like a child opening a present. I am delighted to watch.
Your excitement never fails to create smiles. Beautiful slabs my friend.
Love those dark rich colors from the New Mexico rocks
Wow, I knew there was more to the "Land of Enchantment", but never knew it as a rockhound and missed out on that whole aspect when I lived there one summer. Drogon had a gourmet meal! Delicious rocks! Those doggone gallbladders, always causing trouble, but it feels so much better to get rid of them. I'm glad you're on the mend. Thank you for letting us enjoy Drogon's meal with you.
I love rock hounding in New Mexico. The spring in the desert is my favorite time. Beautiful wild flowers, awesome weather, and great rock hunting. Winter isn't bad either.
Wow you find the most amazing rocks where ever you go. Awesome... Thanks so much
Wow! The reveal at 15:25 is the best. That one is intense
Those rocks are beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Rock Mom...you are a delight to watch. I, too, get such a sense of awe at times! And, I haven't heard "Holy Cow" for ages! Keep enjoying and sharing, Blessings, Meg
Thanks for cutting and showing all the agates. Hope you are recovering well
Great to have you back on my computer screen today! I'm sure that Drogon loves New Mexico too, since there are so many jelly and candy filled rocks to lick! So much fun to see your finds and the fabulous results of those cuts. Keep recovering your health, and keep rocking! Thanks Mom!!
That explains why I haven't seen you lately. Glad you're back!😊
Kim so glad that you are back at it!!!
What a beautiful collection you found in NM.
Absolutely stunning
My god, each one is so beautiful . Thank you.
Glad your ok Kim, dang! Beautiful pieces here wow!
Thanks again for taking us with you as you explore the microcosm inside those beautiful rocks. You never really know what is just under the surface of each slab and each side of each cut. I love your vids.
I'm almost 3 months late to this NM slabbing party! Sorry you had to undergo surgery...but I bet you feel fantastic now! "Been there, DONE that" !!! Can't wait till you return....
MRM, you are getting quite the agate collection to enjoy! Thank you for sharing it all with us.
I have them all labeled in my garage = rock nerd.
Beautiful rocks! Praying for a complete recovery 🙏🏻❤️
Beautiful specimens in this video!
Those New Mexico agates are CRAZY!! Glad you are on the mend. Can’t wait to see you and chopper out on the river!
Keep rockin!!👍😎
very unique colors, beautiful
Hi Kim
I’m glad to hear you are on the mend and back doing your beautiful rocks. The New Mexico rocks are so stunning. There are times I wish you had a store so I could pick up some of your beauty’s. I have really enjoyed watching which is the next best thing. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, you really have spoiled us, thank you, that was wonderful.
I wish you a quick recovery. All the best from the land down under xno
Glad surgery went well loved the white agate plus the brown
Nice finds and cuts! So glad you are recovering. Thanks for sharing Drogon's feeding time. Lol
I'm really glad you are doing well and recovering. I hope you get the faces of some of those wonderful fascinating agates polished and displayed. The Malachite is very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Sorry to hear about the gallbladder surgery! Hope you heal completely!
Always love your videos!
Hillbilly Rockhound
Awesome specimens
Glad you're on the mend now ❤️ rocks surely help with that!
Im late to this video, such beautiful rocks. Love you and chopper. Love from me and Ted.
Totally digging those agates! Being here in Texas, New Mexico is one of our closest spots to rockhound for such material (even though "close" = 800 miles away). I've never made a trip there where I didn't come home with incredible stuff. Also glad to see you up and recovering. Get better soon so you can get back out on that river! Theo is finding all the good material!
I really like watching Montana Rock Mom.
I have a large piece of petrified wood from New Mexico.
Just wanted to say
again how much I like the Montana Rock Mom channel !!!
Your enthusiasm is so engaging.
Stunning ❤❤
at 15:10 my jaw hit the floor and made me want a Drogon of my own!!
A lil late but I just seen your Montana Adventure so glad your recovered greatly!!! Super Super Jealous would be an understatement! Beautiful creations made by none other than Mother Nature and a hand from Upstairs I'm sure! He is truly GREAT! Your very blessed!
Sorry to hear about your gallbladder. I had mine removed a few yrs ago as well. Great finds.. love the patterns!
Thank you for explaining how and why you cut it and getting so many awesome cuts in a short time
Good found crystal
Not a dud in the bunch. So beautiful!! 😍
Oh my , LOL look at the Thunder egg you cut. it looks like Chopper! That's all I could see when you cut it. How amazing! I love watching your Channel. You have some amazing machinery. I really like your microscope. Your finds are truly phenomenal! Every time I go out to the river I always look for your red Jeep. Hoping to run into you one day while I'm out hunting.🤞. You go girl!!
Each cut so beautiful but that Thunder Egg 🤩
Gorgeous! I need to get down to the Deming area soon.
That is amazing! Hope you recover quickly 😊
Love your cutting video's!
🎉I recently drove from Folsom to Kenton along 456 and the Dry Cimarron.Amazing and strange agate at the open range access
The thunder egg is fabulous!
I had a feeling something was up you’re so consistent with your videos I just sent you lots of love and I missed them. I hope you heal quickly🤎
Thank you!
WOW !! Super awesome
Beautiful agate Thank you!
You're back!
Beautiful! ♥
I lived in Parker,AZ and went rockhounding nearly everyday. Found some incredible pieces that resemble some of the ones you showed.
I bet you have some nice stuff! Arizona is truly a special place for rockhounding.
@@MontanaRockMom yes it is but I love the material you show from Montana and want to make a trip there.
What places did you look I found snakes in parker
Hey Kim! Glad you’re on the mend! while you may love NM, I just love your state! just spent a week on the yellowstone! Those were some stunning pieces of Drogon nommage. Hope you’re able to hit the river prior to runoff! i’m sure chopper misses his bones and geese chasing.
Wow Kim I was really hoping you would do a video on these!!! I love them all, great job on the cuts... you got the best face out of each one! They are so different/unique than most agates I've seen from Oregon and Montana.
Where in New Mexico did you find these lovelies? We are headed there in May 2023. We are total newbies 🎉
@@terryraybould2093 rockhound state park, near Deming NM
So happy that you're up and feeling better. When you're a rockhound its awful to be made to stay inside.
You have many beautiful finds. You're so lucky to be in the area where you live. I'm moving from Michigan where we have plenty of rocks and lakes to South Carolina that has no rocks where I'm going. Just the very boring ocean and sand. But I will start looking for shark teeth that will have to be my new hobby. 🌞🌴
Shark teeth are so fun to look for! Looks like South Carolina has a bunch of stuff! I'm excited for you...

amazing!!!!!! New mexico rocks!!!!
Makes me want to be 20 years younger and able to climb up and down cliff faces and hike for miles once again .but I'm happy you share some of your stunning beauties. I try to but agate slices and cabs when I find them now and bead with them my mind is running over with ideas. Thank you thank you so much. Be well and wish you a short recuvery. God Bless.
I want to be 20 years younger too, LOL. Hiking/climbing, especially in the 100 degree heat...tough stuff! Especially with a backpack full of 50 pounds of rocks!
* WOW The first rocks you cut were Fabulous.. the banding is so Pretty.. They seem to get better as you went!! Congrats ! ! The last pieces at the 22:00 mark are SEAM Agate. they formed between 2 layers & filled the Seam. Therefore, Seam Agate.. Really fabulous,,
Spectacular seam agate... thank you for your knowledge and comments 🥰
Dang you have an awesome hobby here. I’d like this too.
Hi, I really like the second to last one. I would love to go there and find some like that.
Glad to hear that the pain in your eyes had a cause, and it was managed. Looking forward to more cool agates! And please forgive my observations, my empathic side cannot help it.
* If you take the Agate window in the Agate at the 5:30 mark, and hold Bright light at an angle in back of it, you Might see IRIS Agate.. Rainbow flashes of Color.. So Beautiful.. No River to knock off all that Banding.. WOW.. What a wonderful way to recoup from Surgery.. Get Well & Stay well..
WOW, I'd love to have made the kitchen & bathroom countertops made using these slabs of leftover pieces!
That would definitely be the BEST EVER for any home!
Glad you're ok!!! We were all getting worried
I bet those dark slabs would look even more amazing under a uv light!
Glad to hear you are okay. Was wondering what had happened. I dont know if you had the orthoscopic surgery with small holes or a big surgery but i hope it was the small on. I had the big one and was sore for a long time. Word of advise stay sway from greasy foods and spicy foods for a while or minimize them until you get use to them again. Also be careful with any antacids they can mess with you.
As for the rock beautiful finds but i loved the first one you cut with the oval in the bottom right corner that was amazing and the one with the bright orangy red blotches were amazing also. Out of the store bought rocks i liked the fibrous malachite and the spirit quarts most. But all of your finds were amazing and beautiful. Thanks for taking the time to video and i hope u are up to speed soon ❤️👍
That one at 15:50. Wow that’s a beauty
Crazy lace is so special 👍💞
magnifique !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you recovered well from your surgery
AMAZING!! You need to visit your mom more often.
Haha. Agreed.
Amazing New Mexico agates!! The white banding line that you mention in 12:12 I believe is onyx. Our agates we find are accompanied by onyx. It makes a really nice contrast. Can’t wait to go over there… it’s on the bucket list!😄
I did not know that...thank you!
Love all the slabs! Breathtaking stuff, are you using a filter by the way? Not on the rocks but on you? Love watching Drogon do his magic 😍
Started to wonder if you moved to N.M.? Glablader is no fun. Glad you are back and hoping you are feeling better and hitting the river soon.
Not just any agate.....trapezoidal!!! Wowzers!!!!!
Ugh those are gorgeous!!! Wow! Is there a website you got them from? I need some of them in my life. The colors are amazing. Crazy lace is one of my top 5! I have a bunch of big pieces I want to cut then tumble! :)
I had my gallbladder removed in 2011. It was one of my hardest surgeries! Hope yours wasn’t too bad! Glad to see you back on CZcams :)
All the ones I cut I found! New Mexico has some pretty awesome rocks!
❤you are so Beautiful!
Wish I could meet you the next time you come to NM
Hello MRM! I am a New Mexican and I live in Las Cruces, I would have loved to go rockhunting with you! Maybe whenever you come to southern N.M. we can go!!!
There are a lot of people who dont represent N.M. like it should be, represented, so thank you for showing New Mexicos potential. There is a lot more here than just agates!
Hello Toby! I think New Mexico is a top notch place for sure for rockhounding! I can't wait to come visit and go exploring again, so I for sure thank you for offering to go with me! I'll have to see how my time permits- with some of my family living there, my mom can be protective like a momma bear and tends to want me 100% to herself-- it can be hard to sneak away!
I’m heading to Alamogordo in two weeks, I would love to go rock hounding!!!
My name is Crystal Toby is my little teeny tiny chihuahua! My daughter named him Toby. I used to work for the Humane Society. I worked there for 15 years and I also was a Veterinarian technician for Jornada vet clinic. These people who where exstended family to me. They brought my a new born chihuahua and asked me to careful the puppy till it was older. Little did I know this puppy was stolen from his motherand owner, which I found out much later through asking questions and getting to the bottom of what I felt was a lie. Well I had to buy formula for the puppy and I had to feed feed him every 3 hours. He grew up and as soon as he was old enough to get his shots and neutered. I spent a great d3al of money on this puppy to stay alive and he made it. The people that stole this puppy weed him back after a year of me having the dog! They wanted to breed him with another female and cuz I knew better the law would be on my side cuz I had friends that where animal control. They even threatened to beat me up and I was like, bring it on! But they said that they would take 40 dollars for the dog!! After i told them he was neutered and of no use for breeding.
Then The nerve of these people! After spending thousands of dollars on this dog, they wanted 40 dollars! I knew the city ordinances, so they had no choice but to leave us alone! I am sorry you didn't ask for this story , but Toby is my choppers! He is such agrumpy dog and doesn't like other dogs. He was raised with a pitbull who he bossed' around all the time, and she listened! But his name is Tobi one Kenobi after Obi one Kenobi!
@@sheilayoung6590 So did you ever find anything in Alamogordo rockhounding? You should try la Luz or Las Cruces! I would like to find a rockhound group in Cruces to go RH with!
New Mexico is my favorite rock hunting area, unfortunately the forest fires are stopping me right now. May they get rain soon!
🙏🌧🌧🌧
There are some really good gravel bars in Kentucky as well!
Gold!🫣👀
I love crazy lace
Gawd, what gorgeous stuff, I bet some of it will do cool stuff under a UV. I just got one and can't believe some of the colors I got. I also learned I don't dust nearly enough. So glad you're doing OK, I was starting to wonder. Pace yourself. Is there going to be a New Mexico rock hounding video?
No rockhounding NM video...it was right before I got my gallbladder removed and I was in too much pain to multi-task, lol.
Knew something going on with u.
Missed U ...
💋😘😗 video 📹😍❤ 🏆
terus berkembang untuk batu akik, semoga makin ramai para penghobi nya
I could be wrong, but I think that you’ve found “Moss Agate”. 🙂
I think if drogon has a sibling that is not so aggressive it might be good to feed it some of drogons food....A saw with a thinner blade may not chip or brake so many samples..Also with the thinner blade you won't loose as much material (ie more to play with).......All joking aside sorry to hear that you had surgery but look to be doing well! All the rocks you buought back are beautiful.............You be well and be safe.......................Bill
Hi there, great video❤️ always love seeing you feed Drogon.
I was wondering what you do with the slabs, do you hand polish them, or put them in the tumbler.
I usually end up saving them up till I get enough to tumble. Others that I really like I polish and put on a display stand...
@@MontanaRockMom that sounds like a great plan.
We have a tile saw, with a 10 inch blade.
We just cut some really beautiful stuff.
Small stones too for pendants.
