Absolutely, I'm glad you asked. YES! These letters are very esoteric. For the common people they were a sealed document. Barely entertaining and even hard to believe. But for the Initiated they were a secret coded texts with hidden meaning. Consider the Section about the tree of life and the Nachash Akalaton....
As a historical note, it is interesting that over the five centuries these legends entertained the imagination of some, the real world produced the writings of Maimonides cir. 1200; Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman, Ramban, cir. 1280; The Rosh; The RaN; The Yaavitz; HaRav Bartanura; The Saforno; Rabbi Yosef Karo, the Shulchan Aruch, cir. 1570... The gap between deep thought and wild fantasy is enormous.
Consider Rav Shlomo Malco. Maybe the Gap between deep thought and esoteric information isn't as big as you might think. For the common people, these letters were entertaining. You can find this letter in a book published by Oxford called "The Hebrew letters of Prester John" In 1519 it would have been Pope Julius II.
