  • This video contains three short movies about swallows. The first one shows them in slo-mo squabbling on utility wires; the second shows Barn Swallows closeup nesting; the third shows Cliff Swallows gathering the mud for their adobe nests.

I used to see lots of cliff swallows when it was breeding season. They are such fun birds to watch! 🙂

Have you had a chance to see them gathering mud? Even if you haven't, of course, they're still a lot of fun to watch.

Nice video Jo! There's violet-green swallows to be seen just south of me, but I haven't gone to film them yet... other than a juvenile I filmed once. I hope you had a good summer!

Thank you, Tara--and well said. Right now I'm working on a video about Purple Martins, using a camera that does super slomo for much of the footage. I hope you'll stay tuned for it. (Be up in another couple of weeks, probably.)

I really enjoyed this video! I’m not sure why it took me so long to begin noticing swallows but now they’ve become 1 of my favs! I live on the other side of the state, near Kansas City. We have 80 acres & lease part of the land to farmers. Perhaps that’s why there are so many swallows-they are drawn to the crop fields or maybe it’s the ponds? When the tree & barn swallows arrived this spring, I was amazed at their aerial acrobatics. The tree swallows ended up nesting in the forested areas of the land but a pair of barn swallows built a nest on the front porch. We’ve established a routine-they know when I take walks & now follow me the entire time, swooping & diving around my dog & I the entire walk. At 1st I thought it was the territorial thing you described but it continued even when quite far from their nest. Finally realized the clever little guys are catching bugs disturbed by our movement! Quite amazing to watch. Thank you for the video.

Yes, as far as them following you for the bugs you stirrup, several commenters have mentioned that the swallows follow when they mow grass. Same thing. You’re lucky to be able to see so many kinds of swallows right there at home. We live in the suburbs, and I have to leave the property to get any place where I can watch swallows. By the way, I also have a movie about barn swallows and one I know you’d like about tree swallows fighting for nesting sites.

@@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME I watched both of them & enjoyed them very much. Thanks for the suggestion! I was surprised to hear you live in the suburbs, as the image I had of your property was the running stream you had built & the surrounding landscape. So I watched it again & sure enough, I could see neighbors houses etc. You’ve done a lovely job of landscaping! So the swallows tend to avoid suburban enviro? Rewatching the winter video also made me add Bark Butter to my shopping list. There are so many birds I’ve been unable to attract close enough to see. Course the 2 categories I’m struggling to find are Warblers & Vireos. With the amount of property & forested sections I have, I know they’re here. But they sure are determined to remain elusive!

I gave those Tree Swallows my full attention for a couple of weeks and loved learning about them; but I did have to drive fifteen minutes every time I wanted to see them. You've got them right there. Very cool. We do have woods and a spring fed creek at the back of our property. You can see it in the film I did about us getting a Gray Catbird to eat from our hands. We get warblers and vireos in those woods, but you are so right about elusive. I spent a couple of weeks this spring driving to a city park with a bubbler that attracts warblers. Now THAT'S the way to see them.

Thanks Jo! Great information and fun to watch. I have watched Barn Swallows swoop and dive at speeds so fast that I marvel at how they catch an insect with such precision.

Swallows look sweet but they are tuff cookies. I love the beautiful barn swallow!! They are gifted little nest builders. They can make a huge mess but it just lasts a few months of the year . I am so excited to learn about cliff swallows. I am not as familiar with the cliff swallows. I love the way you showed us their amazing colors in this movie . Your THE BEST 🙆‍♀️

I saw some swallows at work today, over a cattle pasture! Looked like maybe cliff swallows, but I didn't get a good look so I couldn't mark it down in my birding book! I don't think they would be cliff swallows though, because there isn't much water around or cliffs. Especially in this drought!

There have to be lots of times when you don’t get a good enough look to ID a bird of course. But at least with swallows you get the joy of watching them fly. I’ve been filming purple martins for my next movie, and it has been a pleasure to watch them.

I love to see these birds in their flight above my head almost every evening!
And with a soothing piece of music side my ears it almost seem they match the sound perfectly.

Every species I've filmed at the nest does both--jettisons most of them and eats a few. Apparently they parents know how much of that they should have in their diets.
