    I will always keep this in mind, was trying hard to drag my knee today on my rc390, trying to get more lean but now I remember that the actual reason for body position is to get less lean angle on the bike to be more safe, 😌 after watching so much of cornering bible episodes still a lot to learn, and more practice, love the video. 👌🏻

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  Před 5 lety +18

      Yes and keep in mind, knee dragging is a result of proper body position, speed, and lean angle.

    • @romanreichel4807
      @romanreichel4807 Před 3 lety +8

      Less angle doesn't necessarily mean that you're more safe. It does in a physical sense. But counter steering is easier and quicker in a more "conservative" riding style such as leaning in the corner. But most importantly, in a left bend, your body is next to your Moto nearer to oncoming traffic, which adds to risk. And last but not least, in a scare moment (like dirt on the road, oncoming traffic, etc) your body instinctively wants to mount back on top of the bike because there you feel like you have got more control on the bike. But that in itself puts more stress on the suspension which can be fatal.
      Dragging knee on a KTM 690 Duke R myself, I really enjoyed this video, but I think the safety issue is much more complex than "less lean = more safe".
      My advice for young riders:
      -learn all three cornering styles equally
      -drag knee only in long bends where you can see the exit of the corner at all times
      -left bends are more dangerous than right bends
      -drive through the corner beforehand to see if there gravel/oil/etc.
      -only start dragging knee if you already managed to get your rear tire to it's limit using lean style so you know what it feels like to be on the edge. Chalk on the tire can help you quite a bit.
      -ATGATT, especially when dragging knee, just as the instructor told! I can't stress this enough, my American friends!
      I usually don't comment much on yt videos but I felt like I needed to add this for the sake of everyone's safety, especially young riders. I'm not saying that motojuitsu is wrong, is just think that there's more to that topic.
      Just my two cents in the topic
      Cheers from Germany

    For those that are having trouble moving your upper body off watch your wrist. You should always be light on you hands and therefore you should be able to adjust your inside hand to have a grip as if your holding a hanging baseball bat. You should be able to put the bike on a stand, move your body upper and lower and then you should be able to let go of the handle bars and put your hands straight out without moving your body

    awesome video. I would like to see the right turns being done. I find it a lot harder to set up the grip on the throttle going right. Also, will the rear set height affect the max lean of the bike? Or should that be irrelevant on any bike as far as maximizing lean angle?

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  Před 6 lety

      I have some of my videos where I'm practicing doing figure 8's...going both directions! No, the rear seat doesn't dictate max lean. It's usually the footpegs or floorboards or something hard, which dictates you're getting close to max lean.

    I hardly go to the track and I drive a BMW S1000XR. My question is: could you made a video to show us how to lean the bike more than you often practice in the parking lot?

    • @ricardomaranon4565
      @ricardomaranon4565 Před 6 lety +2

      Fast Eddie’s Motorcycle Fun mmm... no, my question is: In this video, you explain us that to get the knee down, we do not have to lean a lot the bike, because is safer. You also comment that the way you lean the bike in the track is much different, that you lean all the "chicken strips" with the KTM in the track.
      What I want to see is how you lean the bike in the parking lot with the track technique.
      Thanks Eddie!

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  Před 6 lety +1

      Ohhhhhhh ok, I think I understand now. Well the simple answer is I just go way faster. I don't have a knee dragging in a parking lot technique then have another KTM track riding technique...I do the exact same things but the speeds are 5 times greater. Additionally, at the track, I'm in all my best gear, full leathers, my "track" gloves, etc..it's the safest place to ride....nothing to hit...amazing grip, everyone going the same direction, etc. I have a lot of videos of me at Apex Track here in Southern CA and a video of me at Chuckwalla Raceway...If you watch them, I do the same thing (get my knee down) but there are slight things I do differently that don't have anything to do with body position. For example, my trail braking and throttle are way more aggressive.

    • @OmairAK
      @OmairAK Před 5 lety +1

      Fast Eddie’s Motorcycle Fun I also like to add up to this question that how much lean is safe on the street? I ride a zx6r and I know that there so many factors come into play when leaning like pavement condition, tires. So how much lean is good with knees gripping the tank for road riding? There are no tracks in my city in Canada, so only spots we can lean is either on and off ramps or some country roads.

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  Před 5 lety +2

      Omair Khan Not what you want to hear but that’s impossible to say. How fast are you going? Faster you go the more you’ll have to lean just to make it. With proper body position you can lean the bike less. But the idea is to lean as little as possible for any corner.

  • @hangqi9271
    @hangqi9271 Před 3 lety +1

    Hi Greg, you mentioned hanging off can make the bike lean less. I understand that by hanging off, the gravity central shifted to the inside, so leaning less can counter the same amount of centrifugal force as we don’t hang off and lean more.
    But I thought when bike is at a certain pace, the turning angle is decided by the lean angle because how big the is the turn is decided by how much distance the inner tire traveled less than the outside tire. I’m a bit confused why leaning less could still make the same angle turn. Is the handlebar also at different angle?

    • @MotoJitsu
      @MotoJitsu  Před 3 lety +3

      For the same speed & radius yes. If you go faster through the same corner, it must lean more to make it, the idea is body position will make it lean enough to make it, but not excessively. Handlebars don't really matter...and for street riding, body position I hardly use...only time I do full body position knee dragging stuff is at the track or big open parking lots to practice.

  • @isoundss7140
    @isoundss7140 Před rokem

    Been practicing this, but I can't do it at a slow pace. Reason being when I go slow pace around a parking lot in second gear the bike is too twitchy if I don't use clutch and when I do use clutch my hand is in a weird position and hurts after 10 minutes. When I go fast and I don't have to use clutch it's so much easier to get my knee down. The bike is not so jerky. My favorite is to do it when I get off the freeway that long ramp. Speed is 25 and I drag my knee at 50. But i got pulled over for going 50 off ramp. So that sucks.

    Please enlighten me on the following. I`m a noobie rider so I expect this to probably not make sense but, why knee down and have your body axis on the inside of the turn, when you can keep your back straight to counter balance the bike and counter steer the bike in the turn. I understand that then the bike is leaned in at an angle and your body is straight acting as a counterwieght - and that the bike being leaned over more makes it less stable (compared to upright) but when is it practical to use one turning style over the other? I just don`t see people knee down almost ever on public roads, so I`m curious as to a. when do people knee down if not on track and b. why do it as opposed to counter steer the bike in an angle while keeping back straight to counter it? THANK YOU for your videos they are amazing btw !

    • @MotoJitsu

      Makes total sense, depending on what you mean by fast and slow :)) I ride a duke 390, within speed limits so my "fast" corners are not ever more than 40 miles an hour for now (i`m a noob) I don`t think at these speeds I should be overly concerned with knee downs and such right ? Peter W I would imagine people who don’t know basic riding skills never to try this until he/she attends a course where they will learn about pressure/temperature, etc. pressure depends on many factors, but each bike has a recommended pressure for that bike. Put your bike at that pressure for 99% of your riding...if at track or doing this type of stuff, drop 2/3 lbs before hand. (Note* always adjust pressure while tires are cold and before you ride).
