My two cents: the bass is instantly more clear and audible in the intro, but also the rest of the song. It's great (especially that bass growl at 5:25 that just about every remaster leaves out). Outside of the thunderous fills, the snare, kick and cymbals sound a little quiet, especially during the vocal sections. The panned vocals from James are a bit loud, overall. Still, this is a marked improvement over the original, which sounds like a brick wall converted into a sound wave.
Nicholas van der Waard Also yeah I totally agree, I’m disappointed with the recording sound quality, this shit sounds like it was recorded with a potato. The raw stems sound awful and have a fuckload of bleeding. Thanks for the feedback!
Sad But True, yet I have never bought this monstrosity of an album, yet I own every album, single, special limited edition things such as VHS singles and so on by Metallica, yet not this album as it actually is draining to listen through more than 3 songs due to how badly it was produced... I do own the album, but it is the GH3 version which is the closest we have (up until Andy does the rest of the album like this) or Metallica release an official remix/remaster of it!
@@Defensive_Wounds But you know, it this album had the production of Hardwired, then it would be better than Black Album, cause the songwriting is fucking excellent on this album.
Leonardo 17 Not really. There's a lot of unnecessary bridges, shitty soloing, awful drumming. It's an overrated and underrated album. The mixing has nothing to do with its success. The first 3 Metallica albums have shitty mixing and production yet were really successful
Meh, there are two very good songs on this album, the rest are mostly average or disappointing. Hardwired was a much better album (the first half anyway).
Holy crap and people say thier newer stuff isn't half as good., This song still blows my away. Easily on par with the black album, if not better! especially that intro. Also that riff during the chorus, its tasty. incredable job as always.
I'd say Death Magnetic is a straight continuation from AJFA. Dunno why people don't like it (apart from the production but it never stopped me listening)
jonny Producers rarely stitch drum takes, Lars just got tired. And I doubt he did the drum track more than 2 times during the recording session, they practice beforehand
James and Lars have tinnitus. What sounds good to their ear probably isn't what their mixer thinks but has to follow their orders. That's how ...And Justice For All ended up with downtuned bass.
This is amazing, DM is probably Metallica's most underrated album and it finally got the touch it deserved. You should remaster the whole album if you've got the time! Greetings from Serbia! ^_^
I really like that your mixes don't take any character away from metallica's tone and overall sound. In fact, the way you make the mixes fill up with James' voice almost calls back to their early work, but in a modern way. If I was them, I would hire you immediately, and get right to work :)
Jesus I'm hyped. Greatest song of modern Metallica which was destroyed by shit mastering - and now finally we received version of this song as it should have been! Thank You Ahdy!
The whole album is ruined by poor mixing. Cheaply adjusted post production EQ that causes certain frequencies to crack into pure distortion, just pop any song in and adjust your EQ it gets even more obvious. Which they improved a lot upon in their Beyond Magnetic release, but even that album's music quality is butchered.
Completely agree, it's just a shame Kirk Hammett decided to produce one of his *laziest* solos to date. If you forced him to spend a few months on writing a good solo, it'd be one of their best ever, IMO.
Damn, it's hate on Death Magnetic these days huh?..First it was the acoustic in the 80's, then it was the "poppy" Black album, then "oh no they cut their hair" then Load and Reload was bad now everyone loves those albums these days, then "Lars sucks and wants money" then St. Anger (understandably so..and the only one I understand the hate for), then "Lars used to be a legend and magicaly is a terrible drummer now" then ...And Justice for All not having loud enough bass, and now Death Magnetic "used to be bad ass, now it sucks..." I've come to the conclusion that your all sexually frustrated
Man, why the hell has 'tallica not employed you to do their mixing? These versions are SO much more enjoyable! And that's coming from someone who LOVES Metallica.
Omg! Hetfield's vocals are so clear I can perfectly understand the lyrics! I just think that maybe the guitar and the drums are a bit low in the vocal sections, but still it's a great remix!
Dude, I thoroughly appreciate your work. One suggestion... Please give a little more high end on the cymbals. One thing that got me addicted to Metallica early, on ...And Justice For All was the sleigh bell sound.
Hi Ahdy, I'm just listening to your remasters on repeat and wondering, if you haven't already, could you attack Metallica's 'The Unnamed Feeling', 'St. Anger' and 'Some Kind of Monster'? Love your work.
If they ever release a remastered version of Death Magnetic, I'll buy it up in a heartbeat. This and The Day That Never Comes were some of Metallica's best songs since 1991.
I think the original sound a little tighter and slightly scooped, which I actually prefer because it highlights the fast downpicking and the overall gallopy rythm. Though the bass in this version is more audible which I think is quite important and which also enjoyy so great job. :D
yeah on hardwired it seems like he just improvised random stuff and they took his first takes. He was frustrated because of his lost riffs he wanted to contribute and probably wasn´t giving 100% at this point. But I hope he is more in touch with the upcoming material and composes his solos more when he is also generally part of the general songwriting process.
The amount of hate that HTSD and Death Magnetic both get really take me by surprise. I thought those two albums were really good, especially compared to St. Anger
I like both of the albums, in fact I think it's a good way to return to roots, but even after all these years, I can't get over how (in my opinion,) poorly the albums were mixed originally; especially on Death Magnetic. They don't deserve the hate, and if anyone likes the album but hates the mix then Andy here is a great alternative to the album. He just has to remaster all of the songs on the album now!
They're both poorly mixed and mastered and HW in particular is really bloated with songs that don't really do anything special, imo. Plenty of good songs but aside from 3-4, most of them aren't up to snuff with pre-Black
Not to hate on your comment but St Anger isn't that high of a bar to surpass. But regardless, HTSD and death magnetic are both good albums, in my opinion. Death magnetic is one of my favorites only behind Master Of Puppets.
Used to run to jog to this on the treadmill..Then run! Then sprint!! I'd maxed the machine and everyone in adjacent treadmills moved away. Either they feared the ferocious beast I unleashed or they feared I'd turn into a projectile upon tripping.

My only complaint is with how you have James's guitar quieter than Kirk's guitar at times, and the intensity that his guitar delivers to ome of the later parts is diminished.
