  • Once again, something just a little different. Join me for a tour of PORTLAND'S CITY OF THE DEAD, the largest mausoleum on the West Coast. With the remains of over 90,000 people resting here (with room for another 40,000 more), it truly is a Necropolis. Complete with resident ghosts and a labyrinth of halls, rooms, nooks, and levels, it is truly a sight to behold. Open to the public just one day a year, on Memorial Day, it's worth a visit.

I might have gone through there in 1991. At the time, I was in cemetery sales, and in the area on vacation. It was amazing, and the columbaria were especially interesting. They held a variety of styles of urns, with a favorite being made to resemble books. That's just what I would chose for myself.

I worked here in the 90s. We all knew what a magical place it was. During morning break we would go to the 8th floor where is the maintenance department had their office and eat the donuts that were delivered fresh. You truly could spend time looking for a specific crypt or niche and not see a person in those long, spooky corridors. You enter the building on the 5th floor, and the other floors are below ground. When we pushed the button for the elevator to come get us from the dungeness wings, it was always very creepy when the elevator door slowly opened to retrieve us.

All these folks ashes are there but their spirit is someplace else. If there are spirits there they may feel protected and safe. Interesting subject and place, I am sure the spirits will make sure that no one breaks in. And if they do they will regret it. So, stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.

been here a few times. just by chance rode by on a bike ride summer 2007. Im sure it wasnt memorial day. door was wide open. is was nearing dusk. I walked in. I never saw 1 person. Never heard a sound. Walked around in an endless maze of urns and statues. It was like dark and 10 pm when I left creeped out of my mind. I swear I kept thinking a Phantasm kill chrome ball was gonna hum around a corner and drill my skull! Got the bejeezus scared out of me when I walked down a dead end hallway and it was almost dark. I thought I heard something and turned around and about had a heart and panic attack...it was a pure white crypt cat running up to me! scarier than a black one it looked like a floor ghost coming toward me! OMG! I'm not a fraidy cat. You have to see it to believe it. 90,000 souls around me and you could hear a pin drop. Nobody around. No cars. It is surreal and gigantic in size. I kept thinking "wheres Igor the evil caretaker?" Never forget that evening.

“Most intelligent people who could leave Portland did.”… There’s a lot about this statement I don’t understand, but something tells me I don’t really want you to explain it. You see, this is usually a statement made about mind-numbing backwaters and burbs, not bustling centers of culture and opportunity. Of course, Portland has mostly changed in negative ways over the past decade or so, but, not only are the reasons for that mostly about issues facing the country and world as a whole, but it also doesn’t explain why your statement speaks of the past (unless you’re referring to a recent past in a way that sounds more distant). I was born in Portland in the eighties, and, although I’ve lived in a couple other places, Portland has been my lifelong home. I have some criticisms of it, but there are far worse places to live. If economic inequality wasn’t such a tremendous issue, it would sure help a lot, but, well, anyhoo, politics is what I was trying to avoid here, so maybe we shouldn’t leave clues in our comments about those things to begin with. Right now we’re one for one, so let’s just leave it there, ok?

@@TalesUntoldYT That's good to know. In the Eugene-Springfield area is an historical cemetery where number of my relatives are buried. There were times we'd go there, just to remember those we loved. When I was young, family members would go there to tidy up the graves of our loved ones. It was always a peaceful place with birds and other small wildlife. Now, the cemetery is under management. It's completely fenced off with a gate that is locked. It's opened on Memorial Day. I think people can visit, but they have to call the management for an appointment. I suppose the intention was to reduce potential vandalism.
It appears that some of the graves have been moved. My grandmother's grave is now in a different location than it originally was. To my knowledge, no one in my family were ever notified of the relocation. Except for my brother and I, there is no one left in our family. Those from our generation and those back in the past have all passed away. The times have certainly changed.

Built between 1900 and 1901, it would have relied significantly on coal fired steam equipment during the construction process.
