This episode gets into the context of what it's like to redeem miles. We set the scene by talking about how award tickets are priced, what it means to have flexibility when booking, and obstacles you might encounter.
The Takeoff podcast is brought to you by 10xTravel - a website and community with one simple goal: to help you travel more while spending less. 10xT publishes content related to credit card rewards, personal finance, travel, and lifestyle. Host Bryce Conway launched 10xT in 2014, but has been a fan and member of the points and miles community since 2011. He is the author of “Takeoff: How to Travel the World for Next to Nothing and How to Fix Your Credit: Do it Once. Do it Right. Get on with Your Life”, and his work has been featured in multiple national media outlets including Good Morning America, Money Magazine, and ABC Nightline News. Tune in to hear the 10xTravel team give you a clear path to entering the exciting world of traveling with points and miles.
    Discussion Points:
    - Laws we wish were in effect
    - Redeeming miles = playing chess
    - Searching all the award options quickly
    - There is no central search platform for all points and miles
    - Aggregators we have used- Expert Flyer, Point.me, SeatSpy
    - Award travel pricing is unpredictable, and a limited commodity
    - Travel dates, destination, price/value - usually you can only get two out of three
    - How the team prioritizes the three
    - Booking travel ‘wherever you can afford’ takes a lot of search time
    - Common pricing models
    - Sweet spots within the pricing models
    - Standard vs. Saver awards
    - Don’t beat yourself up for not getting the cheapest award fare- better to use, than lose, your points

Totally agree with Emily's law. Not just transportation, but sidewalks also. This is an excellent video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Points.yeah has been the best for alerts. Others didn’t show these awards.

About clapping when the plane lands. Don't go to Puerto Rico. This has been a thing for generations. I remember it being a thing in the 70s when I wasn't even a teenager yet.

And I like it, right? It’s almost a cultural thing at this point. I’ve noticed all the Caribbean islands and west African countries I’ve traveled to do it.

I had someone on a 4.5 hour flight ask me to switch with him. He was middle & I had window. I had a broken left ankle at the time that was against the window and my foot was in a boot. I would never have done it anyway, but the fact that I told him that I had a broken ankle and he asked a second time made me want to discharge him from the plane. People have huge nerve!

My seat-swap story of shame. It was a long JetBlue transcon flight (JFK-SEA) in business, and I was initially approached to switch seats, but I cut the poor lady off before she got more than a few words out. Turns out, her husband was sick with a bad cold, and Jet Blue separated them, and she was asking around so they can sit together. Had I been in a better mood (I had dropped and broken my very expensive zoom lens the day before), I would of said yeas. Karma got me good, though. That biz seat was the most uncomfortable seat I have ever traveled in. It was an upholstered church pew, basically. Plus, the seat controls only worked intermittently, and malfunctioned when they did work. I could not recline, or use any of the seat functions to make the seat comfortable. It was a very uncomfortable 6 hrs.

Its not always that people poorly planned or they got upgraded.
My husband is a fearful flyer because he's claustrophobic. He needs me sitting next to him because i keep him calm.
Almost every time we fly, not only does the airline bump us out of the seats that i booked usually almost a year in advance but sometimes they even separate us
It's infuriating and it should be outlawed that the airlines can do that
