Life too short for long CZcams videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we skip merrily once again down the Green-brick road towards Emerald City to try and find our way back to Tube Screamer home. DorothyDan clicks the heels of his ruby slippers and ends up, happily for this overblown analogy, right back in Kansas where the JHS Bonzai is waiting. Mick is probably Toto, about to be euthanised by all the people who wished he’d play the PRS Wicked Witch Of The West Silver Sky. The Audio Kitchen Big Chopper is probably Glinda The Good Witch Of The North. This analogy has definitely run its course now.
For anyone who actually wants some information (welcome, you must be new), the Ibanez Tube Screamer is among the most used/loved/hated/fabled/derided overdrives of all time ever. We have the three most popular ones - TS808, TS9 and TS10 - and we’re comparing them with what seems to be the best Tube Screamer clone yet: the JHS Bonsai. And some other things…
    Okay, please enjoy the episode.

I saw your comment and was going to say, "hey, how about getting Simon Keats in to talk about the Revival Drive", and 30 seconds latter Mick mentioned they'd just done an episode on it. Can't wait! I love your Cali76 btw.

Please bring Keats to properly range the Revival Drive it never gets a true perspective! Stop putting this pedal in "shootouts" it is not your basic OD or preamp pedal with normal EQ knob twisting. Can't get clean, oh my god man! And you had the manual????

Fascinating piece of information/knowledge! I’ve been a huge TS-808 fan going back a long time before we have all of the pedals we have today. I’ve had every iteration except for the TS-10 which I actually just purchased because I really think I overlooked for a lot of years. I’m looking forward to testing it out and seeing if it becomes my new favorite pedal. I may look into the Keeley 808 now too!

Revisiting this episode (holeee Moses - that Sidecar!), I realised that I'd rather watch old episodes of TPS than most television shows. I haven't been playing much lately. Paused the ep after that chord that Dan schwanged on the Hudson at 36:47 and played my 335 for 2 hours straight.
    Thx TPS.

Back in the nineties I bought a distortion pedal, which was my only guitar pedal until like two years ago when I started playing electric a bit more again. Only when I started watching guitar gear CZcams videos I checked what that pedal actually was - a Tubescreamer TS10 :) I was a bit disappointed that it wasn’t the famous original TS, but it’s still a nice pedal.

  • @erniesfo2022

I knew this time was coming...TSOD (an additional DSM/ICD-10 code added to ADHD). If you ask me - and I know no one did, or perhaps ever will - the best pedal on this board is the Sidecar. The Bonsai is an excellent 2nd choice for you screamers. To my ears, it sounds as if Josh and crew at JHS took a tip from Hudson and went a littler more "low-end" for roundness, more gain and headroom. So, if not the Sidecar, the Bonsai comes in second - get the Bonsai and go do what you do with traditional Tube Screamers.
btw, A look at/consideration of the Meris Polymoon would be interesting...

Couldnt believe I saw a guy make a video about using drive pedals on clean channels and how he didnt like it he said you can hear the clean through it and im like yeah thats why it sounds so good the guy made no sense at all the best way to use a drive pedal for me is through a clean channel because it gives it that bluesy tone with a little drive behind it its just beautiful just like shown in this video its the best tone with overdrive pedals yeah you can use it with the amp pushing a little still sounds good but not the tone that zi prefer I love absolutely love it through a super clean setting then adding the drive to it thats how you get more of that twangy snappy slightly dirven bluesy tone

That Bonsai sounds great, not the biggest fan of JHS pedals but I'm really tempted to give that a go. And I quite like the floor-board look of the back wall :)

Hi! May I ask what you dont like about the JHS pedals? I'm looking into this and their new Tighty Whitey compressor, but I've never owned a compressor or Tube screamer. Thanks!

I own several JHS pedals and they are all top notch. I own a Morning Glory, Cheese Ball fuzz, and the Unicorn V2 Univibe. They are all great pedals. I am about to buy the Bonasi for the TS-10 and TS-7 settings alone even though they all sound great.

Great TS Show! Personally I use the TS808DX which adds a clean boost to the OD as a second channel. You can engage both sides and flip order just like the D&M Drive. Me thinks I need to check out the JHS pedal, that was well done.

I don’t know how I missed this show. Great playing, Mick! I absolutely love my TS-10. It’s my favorite TS; I’ve had the 808, TS-9 (modded and unmodded) and a TS-5. I recently built a 10 clone and in some ways like it better. It’s like a boutique TS-10 with mods. But there is something about the 10 that the clone doesn’t have. Funny, I feel I still need both. Haha

Just a really good shew.........!!! And such a great bunch of pedals that pursue such nuanced sounds. My problem is I can't deal with all the plethora of pedals that are out there these days. That John Mayor Strat sounds awesome, Mick! And that Gemanium Hudson pedal drives a Les Paul to the sound of Rock!

Great ep. Dan and Mick! Dan, that lick on 4:36 is awesome! I'm going to make a little 'how-to video' for it : ). I've made three of these so far on my channel. The Big Chopper indeed sounds awesome!

Gain/fuzz based episodes are what I live for. Some of the best tones come from these. Funny enough I was never interested in fuzz until your show covered them. Great vid!

Matt38977897 - ha! Same with me! I think the analogman fuzz show really did it for me, those pedals are so musical. I have played big muffs etc and its just a wall of noise with no dynamics. Cant get into it. But the AM fuzz is much different...playable.

I am just not a TS guy. But even a show about pedals that you don’t like helps you to eliminate “what if” questions. I now know that I don’t need any of those pedals for my own style. Thanks Dan and Mick.

I bought my Tube Screamer TS10 at a Thrift Store for $6.00 ! That's SIX BUCKS!!!! It is a 1986 Model made in Japan so it has the JRC 4558 in it. I opened it and checked. Best deal I ever got. It is in mint condition too. :)

Strangely, I woke up panicking that I'd sold my Tube Screamer & genuinely couldn't remember if I still had it or not! It's not been on my board for sometime. Rushed downstairs to check and to my relief, yes I've still got it! Was really worried for a few moments, Will be back on my board this morning :)
love the show by the way. x.

This might not be a popular opinion, but I think the best sound of the whole video was the RYRA 808. It has a little more life and sparkle than the TS808 and even the JHS. You guys really came to life as players when it came on- like, it inspired you. It sounded like a TS, but just a really good one with a touch of "magic" so to speak. That said, I doubt I'm going to buy one...
