- Another of Randi's Robot Refurbish. This time breaking down and refurbishing the TOMY Verbot.
Both the retrobrite method, and just putting it in the sun to bleach out was used.

I used to gaze wishfully at the Omnibot in the Toys R Us display cabinet, but I wasn't upset when my parents bought me home a Verbot for my birthday instead. Looks insane to dismantle, but watching this brought back many happy childhood memories of this toy. Mine was just as disobedient! Another excellent restoration, thank you for the video.
I did the same thing in with the Sears catalog, but all I got was a DingBot.
Ahh memories of arguing with that robot. "Oh come on I said stop!"
@RandiRain - a massive thank you for putting this video together. I’ve only just started collecting those charming little Tomy Robots and purchased my VerBot non working. After watch king your video I could see that it had power but wasn’t making the noise.
I watched your video to help with dismantling and putting back together I was successful is getting my VerBot back together again. I don’t think I would have been able to get it all back together without your video guidance.
Love the others you’ve done and trying to catch up on the other repairs!!
Glad it worked out for you. If you want see more of how the robot works, I discovered more on this video..

Where were you all my life!!! All my bots now work as I understand how they work thru your videos!! Many thanks!!!
I love this video. I had this toy when I was in first or second grade. Just found it again after all these years. Still have the book.
I have another video on the Verbot. I also just got the blue one from Japan. I'll do a video on it soon.

Just bought a pile of parts that is supposed to be a complete Verbot. Trying to figure it out. And this video has already been a huge help figuring out where various parts go. I'll be tinkering with it tonight after work. Let's hope I can make it work. If not it'll still look cool on my shelf with my other robots.
Check out this one too. I figure more out how it works here..

I've watched that one too. And rewatched it earlier tonight. Unfortunately I've hit a couple snags. One several wires are disconnected, no clue where they go. Second problem is the black part that goes on top of the main motor and gear assembly and under the head seems to be missing.
I got one for Christmas in the 80s. I was young and I couldn't get it to work much. I tried like crazy to get it to do commands.
Really cool to see Verbot's interior wiring and to see such skill fixing it. Verbot has a cool design, though the voice functions were a challenge, along with the fast battery drain.
I just found your channel recently and I love it !
I had one of these as a kid, and had great fun with it. Never knew it was so complicated though! I bought a broken one on eBay which I'll be having some fun with :) Thanks for the video, it helped in showing me what to expect as I disassembled it!
OMGWTFBBQ. I am *SO GLAD* I never took mine apart to see how it works! I did eventually connect the remote to my Apple II and wrote a simple "programming language" to control Verbot. Worked a lot better than a human voice!
I've thought about doing that.
My gosh you guys are smart. Freak an A.
Yeah, Tomy... Whoa! Crazy stuff!
Wow! Great job. So fun to see how this “high tech” of my childhood worked underneath.
There's another Verbot video where I go more into detail how it works.
I am SO GLAD I found your channel
Love love love this video!
- Robot STOP !
- You are talking to Me ?
...
WOW ! Vocal remote command (in 1984 ? ! ) AND in other side, one DC motor and lot of smart mecanical sets of gears O.o :D
I have two used verbots and neither will start. The sensor pad works, but the motor doesn't start. Im so nervous opening these things! I really love watching your videos, thank you!!
If the motor won't turn, give it a few good bumps. I swear, a lot of times all they need is a good bang or two.
Same issue with mine
Sounds like you're in a really good mood in this video! Love the complexity of the gears I wonder what their system was for designing things like this back in the day.
Pen and Paper Old School..lol
Love it!
Mine had never been used, used it one time and now the arms are stuck in the center touching each other and won't move. Is this battery drain or did it already malfunction? Lol
Awesome...
Just received mine today that I need to refurb and up pops this video. Is your bulb in the head not working, or is it just the video? I thought the eyes and mouth were supposed to light up.
As for the 9V battery, it was likely there to provide a backup for the RAM which would allow it to remember commands. It has a 1Kx4bit (2114) SRAM chip on board. That SRAM is pretty power hungry, though, so the 9V battery probably didn't last very long and they decided it wasn't worth it. Before I put it all back together, I will explore re-enabling that function.
The bulb works, it's the leads that turn it on are oxidized and don't always make connection. I didn't discover it until I got it back together and didn't feel like opening up again, because some times it works.
Interesting about the 9 volt and the memory. Let me know if you get it working.
@RandiRain - Have you ever found a solution for the hands all the way down sensor? It's the one located behind the control panel on the left when looking at the bot. Normally it's closed when the hands are up, but open when at the lowest position. Many people stored it for years with hands down and the copper leaf is stuck open (so telling it to lower it hands doesn't work as the CPU thinks is already at the bottom) Trying to bend the copper leafs back is iffy at best. :(
I have a few videos on this, and I have ran into the problem. Unfortunately, I couldn't tell you which one it was.
Great show! I recently got a tomy chatbot but the battery terminals are rusted or oxidized. Any idea how I should fix that?
Thank you very much. If you watch enough of my videos, you will see I replace battery terminals all the time. My Omnibot and Omnibot 2000 videos shows it I know. Several others do too. My 'Turn The Terrible Tank' video has battery terminal replacement in it.
Awesome Channel
I have the same robot but no remote would you know where I can get one or would it work without the remote
They should be all the same. Just check ebay.
Like talking to your Cat
So what is the gear shaft that goes up into the head for? Is there a second motor in the head that that selects each function? You’re awesome by the way. Just subbed.
No.. Just one motor in the entire thing. It goes into the head to move this piece in front of the light for the mouth, to make it look like it flashes.
That’s amazing. I think I have an idea of how it works. Would love to see a detailed explanation though. Wink wink nod nod😉
So you do take pictures I wondered
About that
lots
I just bought a non working Verbot from E-bay.
This Verbot take a 9 volt battery in bottom of it's base.
I took it apart and it has a bright metal module on the back of it.
I didn't see this model in your Verbot refurbish video.
I have no idea what the it does.
I'm going to try to get this bot working using your video as a guide.
Love your videos, Thanks
Yes, I plan on covering this in a video some time. The original Verbots needed a 9 volt, and they didn't lose their memory when turned off. For some reason, they ditched that on older models, but the electronics are still there. They just covered over the battery holder. I want to convert an older one to an original style on a video some time. But that's what it is. It holds the memory.
@@RandiRain That's so Awesome.
I hope I get my Verbot to work.
Thanks for the Feed back.
@@RandiRain hi when are going to do the video on reinstalling the 9-volt memory?
@@SI13O14GF No idea. I have a friend that has an old one, but I have no plans right now. Maybe later in the year.
I wonder if the 9v battery was for memory?
It was... Original ones saved the commands even when turned off.
You have impressed me more then any other you tuber has... So I just acquired my own verbot... He looks pristine from a quick glance ..But he doesn't work :(. Your 40 volume hack to lighten the aging of the plastic was relatable for me only because I use it to dye my hair blond! I don't think I have near the coordination or memory to bring my verbot back to life... Do you do mail order robot surgery?
Sorry, I can't take on others. I get too many requests. I do have other videos on the Verbot, some more recent ones. I can always help in any way, I just don't have the time fix it myself.
Hi I just got a verbot with the same problem. I just opened up the case and saw a gear connected to the motor i turned it and wala fixed
Can't beat that.
@@RandiRain I'm jealous. Mine in similar state (lights up, seems to learn commands, but no motor sound) and I prodded/pushed a couple gears but no cigar. Nervous about opening it all up and also need to find the time to do so. If the motor doesn't work, is it easy to replace?
@@Barnickal The motor probably will still work. It more than likely just has oxidation or grime on the brushes. Squirt some WD40 into the motor and turn it by hand. It will probably work again. In all the robots and toys I have fixed, none of them had bad motors. When taking it apart, takes lots of pictures. LOTS!! From every angle. When you think you have enough.. take more.
@@RandiRain Thank you! I'll let you know when I eventually do it. My 5 year old is eager to see it work and so am I, but not being a pro like your good self I am a bit apprehensive to disassemble. "No disassemble, Stephanie". Thanks
That gear box is complicated 👍🏻
Very much so.
There's a easier way to program this robot that works better than voice commands.
When I was a kid I used a electric keyboard.
I would play a different note for each command and write what each note did.
It was a lot of fun.
Yeah, some people have done it with the computer. That way you can program the movements with tones. Which is how the OmniBot works.
Randi if you like looking at Patents for vintage robot toys I put a lot of them on the Alphadrome robot web site. here is a link for the Verbot.
alphadrome.net/forums/topic/10822-1983-patent-for-verbot/
Here is a link for the patents incase you just want to look them over.
alphadrome.net/forums/forum/34-robot-patents/
Thank you. That will help.
It works just as good as it did when i was a kid. It kind of did what ever it wanted.
It was always so funny that this robot was also called Verbot here in Germany. It means Ban on sth in German. :D Ban on TOMY. ;)
Funny
Can connect this old robot to IoT 😆
