    Really interesting. I'm not aware of many DPs by name so it's good to expand my horizons. Several movies there for me to track down. Such a shame that the film industry hasn't evolved beyond "everyone does their stripes as PA" though. So odd that there isn't an accepted route that starts with visuals.

      Because it is the best route. It is better to have a leader who knows exactly what everyone is doing by actually being in everyone's shoes before, than have some self entitled airborne official.

    It's funny that you played footage from Lucy In The Sky while she was talking about "the film wasn't good but the cinematography was great" cause thats 100% how I felt about that film

      That film was an absolute mess, but seemingly mostly due to an inconsistent vision from Noah Hawley.... The cinematography almost felt Xavier Dolan inspired... Very bold and expressive... I love André Trupin's work.

      Similar story to me I’m from Myanmar bit I’m from the capital Naypyidaw I am trying to get into school in US and like you I would like to be a filmmaker one day never gave up your dream

      Then shoot with your phone bro.
      Make short movies or reels. Just keep making, learning and growing.
      Get a job ofcourse and save money for your dream movie.
      It is hard and demands patience but that's what i am doing. And that's the only thing i have to tell you.
      Other then that, try to get into contact with filmmakers. Even small town ones. Become an AD or whatever. Just get in.
      That will grow you a lot. Contacts and friendship with right people go long way.

      Don't make that demotivate you. Get side jobs so you can earn the money to buy a camera. Otherwise, just shoot with your phone and offer businesses photos for little money. You'll get there.
      I started with my phone and doing every shit gig I could find, and last week I bought myself a cinema camera. It's been 7 years since i started

      I lived in a small town in Arkansas. There are always productions, no matter what state you are in. Volunteer, work for free or just say you’ll be a PA(production assistant). You don’t need to know anything to be a production assistant. Work your way up.

      And an android phone is all you need. Get a gimbal and an anamorphic adapter/lens. You can buy iPhone gimbal online used for $40 or less. A used moment anamorphic is probably around $100 but you really don’t even need that. I’ve volunteered to shoot a commercial for a company in Arkansas and all I used was an iPhone and a gimbal I was able to edit it on my iPhone. There are no excuses anymore with how smart phones are now speaking as somebody who has worked on sets, they don’t know anything that can’t be learned by practicing it. Working with actors, how to compose shots and editing all can be learned online I got my start into cameras by learning with a stop of light was and shooting with a 35 mm SLR. You learn how a Camera works and what certain filters will do and how depth the field works via T stop/F stop and you are on your way

    this is a good example of why, imo, traditional/hard lighting techniques are preferable to modern techniques. i'm watching this in the middle of the day in a bright room and the diffuse/soft lighting night shots lack definition, contrast, etc and are difficult to make out. the traditional night shots with hard lighting are far more engaging and easier for your eye to follow--they pop off the screen in comparison to the soft/natural lighting shots. the modern trend of shooting naturalistic and using diffuse/soft lighting has created a lot of mushy movies and tv shows, which is why you see a lot of people on social media bemoaning that movies are "too dark now." it's not that they're too dark per se but that modern DPs opt for naturalism/diffuse lighting that creates a muddy, contrast-free image. the john wick movies are a rare exception to this trend--those movies largely take place at night and you can clearly see everything happening on screen. if the filmmakers opted for a natural look, the movies would look like low contrast greige sludge.

      You have to consider youtube compression, and video compession in general turn darker parts of the spectrum into dirty sludge.
      On the other hand, films are designed for the cinema screen, where you will have no problems seeing things as they are intended. But if you still want to try on home devices, just consider that screen technology is consistently moving forward, and you might not be at the forefront, neither am I, but I've seen the ones that are, and they can compete with daylight.
