I'm a Martha, for sure, but I'm drawn to be a Mary so much. I enjoy serving and taking care of guests; yet, when they start talking about Biblical things, I cannot help but wish I was there in that, too. Interestingly, once I told God about that desire, the guests started coming into the kitchen so we could work on things together AND talk together about Him!

Hey guys! Thanks for joinging me for today's bible study with me! I want to apologize because this video isn't how I'd like it to be in an ideal world, but I lost the file multiple times and had to rush re-edit it yesterday, anyways- bear with me on this one! On that note, what would you add to this bible study?

I was told that Joseph was related to Lazarus, they were cousins. Martha, Mary and Lazarus was a prominent family in Bethany. Which explains the familiarity that Martha speaks to Jesus. Throughout the bible Jesus always went to Bethany to rest at Lazarus' house where Martha provided hospitality to Jessus and his disciples. You also see the prominence the family had in Bethany when Lazarus passed away with the many people that came to give their sympathies when Jesus showed up. Jesus was very close to this family which is why Jesus cried. I hope this background information helps to Jesus' relationship with this family. God bless you & your family.

@@gloriamedero4290 That's interesting. Looking at the passage, it seems Martha called Jesus "Lord" ("Kyrie"). The only person I can find that ever simply called Jesus by name to Him in person (not even His earthly mother ever seems to do that in the text) is the "good" thief on the cross. (Luke 23:42). What that means, I'm sure I don't know.

My sister shared a book with me called "Having a Mary heart in a Martha world."
Regarding what I expect from my church, I love listening to my pastor"s meaty hour+ long sermons, and relish a second hour of congregation-wide bible study right before or after the sunday service. I eagerly come back sunday night for a light service as my pastor delivers his walking through the bible sermon, letting the order of the bible dictate his topic ob Sunday night, while Sunday morning is a time for him to choose a topic from current events and cross reference new and old testament passages. I also keep my schedule clear in order to attend church on Wednesday nights. My church provides a 1/2 hour of service that digs deeper into the Sunday service and solicitation of prayer requests, followed by a splitting of the congregation into small prayer groups to pray together for all the requests. I love that the pastor leverages the assistant pastor and deacons to conduct congregation-wide bible studies, giving them an opportunity to practice their speaking and instructor skills.
I love how the pastor often invites missionaries to give a guest service and tell us about their work and ask for support in lieu of holding a regular sunday night, or hosts a high profile evangelist to spend the whole sunday and into the following nights delivering a special series of sermons. I love the singing. When I first joined after being absent many years, I discovered that singing was really hard, i didn't know the tunes, my voice cracked, i sang off key, my throat strained at the work of singing every one full song of 4 verses. But with practice, I found my place in the voice of the congregation. What more do I want from my church family? I actually just recently had an opportunity to join a women's bible study. Often, the women's groups are scheduled during the week while I'm at work. When I finally get settled in my new home in my new town and new church, I hope to be able to host some evening Bible study suppers, sunday afternoon teas, and a porch swing Bible book club in which we read the bible together and have prompts for conversations. I love it when I am invited to attend a project circle event or extracurricular activity to parcipate in. I was invited to a quilts day no sewing skills required. Someone had a shoebox full of squares that i layed out into stacks of matching colors and then proceed to select and arrange some into a 9x6 square pattern and a corresponding backing of my choice to be packaged into a kit for a sewer to take and assemble. Another activity I enjoyed was watching my church softball team play at an away game. I took my sister and we made up the entire visitors fans section. We had fun cheering on the team and doing the wave for home runs. I know its easy to become a Martha at church, busying yourself with all the duties involved in hosting extra church activities yourself, but catch yourself. Are you doing too much? Are you stretching yourself too thin? Are you stealing opportunities from others who can't find a place to help? Are you creating opportunities for visitors to participate in the activities? I suggested that my church should have a dashboard of opportunities to post everything from getting on a schedule of visiting and reading to shut-ins to mowing the grass at church. There is a statistic that suggests that 10% of a body does 80% of the work, but I would ask is that 10% being Martha, doing it all and begrudgingly envying Mary as she sits undistracted among the 80% in a congregation. Sho may just want to be invited to participate in a task or ministry she can do that will not distract her from sitting at the feet of Jesus.

One of my favorite passages is when Jesus says, "Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken from her." It is a good reminder for me when people make fun or don't understand why I live the way I do. No one can take God away from me. Nothing can seperate me from Him.

in my opioion, my church doesn't put a lot of focus on details. Like I am a youth leader, and we sometimes go to different churches for events or whatever. the first thing that I notice is the detail other churches has that mine doesn't. Like flasing lights, and a whole worship youth band for worship, or a whole wing of the church designed for different ages (like the you wing would have a gym, video game room, cafe and worship room) which my church doesn't have. And a tend to go off thinking "if my church just had that... I wonder how much better it would be?"

Why are you forsaking me?... it's bad enough my husband is dead, How am I to provide for the kiddos? I had an interview the next day and got it, great pay, more than whenever I worked. He was there. Made it right. How blessed was I? Still am.

I "scripture-wrote" this in 3 of my favorite Bible versions. In the TLV, I highlighted v. 42's "but only one thing is necessary...." That makes me think of the idea that listening to Him is the only needful thing to do. In v. 39 of the LEB, I highlighted "...also sat at the feet of Jesus..." That "also" isn't in the other versions I looked up. So, Mary is a student of Jesus' in addition to who else? The other one named in this section is Martha. Maybe that means that BOTH women are students of Jesus, but they chose different activities. Mary chose to be an active listener. Martha chose to be an active doer. Verse 42 in the RSV (version I grew up reading, so rings in my heart more) says, "...Mary has chosen the good portion..." To me, that wording makes me think of Jesus saying that His words ARE the meal, and Mary chose well in receiving that food. In my mind, Mary was going counter to her culture, but she couldn't help herself. Maybe she knew she'd be "in trouble" for not doing as she was expected to do, but she just HAD to listen to Jesus while He was there. When He was ready for bread, He might have asked for it when ready. Perhaps He might have gone counter culture and gone to help prep in His timing to do so. My take-away is that we are to serve Him when asked. Meanwhile, be listening, no matter what. When HE says, "Jump up and DO," then I can do so. Until then, I'm to be actively listening, ready to proceed in the direction He points.

I'm new to in depth bible study, so I have bear with me with a question about 4:30. While this cross comparison does hold firm in most translations, it doesn't hold true in the NASB translation (I don't particularly love the NASB but I use it because it was the best option for a specific spiral bound journaling bible I use), as in the Acts verse it doesn't use the sitting at the feet wordage but it does in Luke. How does this affect the validity of the comparison, what causes such discrepancies? I see that same discrepancy in the NLT. My progressive feminist side jumps to thinking that this is due to a sexist(for lack of a better term) view of women, and puts Mary in a vulnerable submissive position and frames Paul as an educated intellectual, but part of me thinks this conclusion might be a bit problematic.

I’m waaaay late but I’ve never understood the obsession with what one wears to church, whether it’s the priest/pastor or the congregation members themselves. If I want to praise God and Jesus in my jeggings and t-shirt because that’s how I’m comfortable, I’d like to think that that would be pleasing to God and Jesus. I doubt They are so concerned with humans as to be invested in if we’re wearing our dressiest clothing. It’s more important to spread the Word than to judge someone by their clothing imoho.

One isn’t better. They’re both beautiful women in their own way. Martha’s personality and faith, not Mary’s personality and faith, were the context for the raising of Lazarus (Lord! If thou had’st been here my brother had not died!). Also as we strive for Mary hearts we might do well to concurrently recall that the Master compares the kingdom to an insomniac Jewish housewife who is so OCD that she demands emotional conformity from the entire neighborhood in the middle of the night.

Martha always gets judged in christian circles but people forget this is not the only time we see Mary and Martha in scripture. At the raising of Lazarath Martha is the one to go out and met Jesus while Mary stays in the house. In John 11 Martha shows great faith.
"Now Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house. Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You. Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
