  • Richard Burns Rally came out 20 years ago. Many testers found it too realistic and unforgiving. But this hardcore approach helped it maintain an active community and fanbase to this day. Lets find out why!

    Bought it for the PS2 back in the day and I knew from my first crash, which happened very fast, that this was it. Bought it for the PC a bit later and now I'm enjoying the rallysimfans mod. And Chirdonhead is one of the very best experiences in all of simracing.

    The "too unfriendly to be fun" review was probably from gamespot iirc, and was from a guy who pretty much only reviewed arcades (on pc, on consoles I don't know, but at that time there were no sims on those, so it was understandable), but for us back then young simracers, it was not only loved, it was adored, the rally version of Grand Prix Legends or Nascar by Papyrus. The only negative thing, for me, was the random photographer that sometimes crossed the road and ruined a perfect run :D

    Drove this a lot and dr2; RBR is punishing stuff like grip in gravel is difficult; slides by the lack of grip remind me going fast in an old 4x4 in my youth in a dusty gravel road.
    DR2 the amount of grip is insane, cars are weightless, is fun for a couple of runs then it gets bored… rbr is adrenaline pumping just to try and finish an stage fast.

    Great review, thank you Emily! Richard Burns Rally - an educational game! I would say, give this game to an older child or a teenager so they will make out what driving a car is about and to know life and physics law on the road.

    Sims from that Decade were very "simmy!" They were designed for the hardcore gamers. Developers have fluffed up a lot of modern titles for the casual gamers to enjoy. Grand Prix 4, Grand Prix Legends, R-Factor, Nascar Racing 2003, Live for Speed and yes Richard Burns Rally. They are all shining examples of that decade. I still don't know a game that handles tire collisions the way Grand Prix 4 did.

    Dirt Rally roads are too wide, the EA Sports roads are too narrow, this is in the middle. I can see the appeal.

  • @firstnamesecondname8280

    I find it interesting that every real rally driver that I know that has tried RBR with all of the mods that are supposed to make it more realistic say that it doesn't handles well at all. Personally it feels like the cars handle like how rally cars look in videos but not actually how they drive. The rally drivers that I've talked to about this game like Jack from Dirtfish and others share the same feeling. There's a reason why real rally drivers prefer the handling of the Codemasters rally games, they actually try to simulate how the tire cuts through each layer of the loose surface.
    I also find it interesting how people praise RBR for having, in my opinion, the exact same physics as DR1 and 2s tarmac which is famous for being the worst part of those games.

    • @zwjna
      @zwjna Před 24 dny +1

      People praise RBR with NGP physics, which offers by far the most realistic rally simulation out there and which is nothing like DR's physics if that's what you meant. Real rally drivers all play RBR/NGP. From amateur yet experienced rally drivers to Teemu Suninen and Kalle Rovanperä streaming the game and saying it's the most realistic hands down, to Nikolay Gryazin saying it's just like the real thing and streaming every other day and literally using it to train for real life. He made a stream just two hours ago in this platform, go and check it. Codemasters games are simcade. Grip levels are way too high and have sideways gimmicks to help the average Joe stay on the road easily. The cars have extremely simple dynamics with barely any understeer and oversteer most specially. There's a reason real-life drivers slide that much, and that's all due to the incredibly slipperiness of real-life terrains.
