Making a Mallet in Under 1 Hour

- If you watched the video of me making the children’s step stool ( • Children's Step Stool ... ) you would have noticed that I didn’t have a mallet. This made things a bit difficult when assembling the step stool. In the comments, Adam the Garage Woodworker challenged me to build a mallet in under 1 hour as part of his 1 hour builds series. I accepted the challenge and in this video, I make the mallet!
If you are interested in seeing a step by step build of this mallet, you can see the instructables post here: www.instructables.com/id/Mall...
It was really fun to challenge myself to build this in under 1 hour. In the end I had just over 4 minutes to spare. You can check out more 1 hour builds on Adam’s channel here: / @bkrcustommotorbikes

That is a beautiful mallet. It's interesting watching one of these videos that isn't mine. Great job, I didn't think you were going to make it for a bit. You scared me at the end and then I cried at the last clip.
Hahah thanks Adam! I didn't think I was going to make it either. I usually spend at least double that amount of time sanding, but I didn't want to risk it. Thanks for putting together this great challenge and I can't wait to see more 1 hour builds in the future! 🍻
@@TheGrantAlexander yes I too would usually sand more. It's great to see my challenge expanding out to other makers 😁
Good stuff! Put a guard on the table saw !!

It's ok, I live in Canada, so the health care is free! Just kidding, I appreciate the advice, and your support! 👍 thanks for watching!
wow I love it how you comment on smaller channels like us, thank you so much for supporting us I am a huge admirer , ill love you to check out my channel too if alexander don't mind
cool quick build
Thanks! It was fun and it helps that it was a tool that I needed! 🍻
Good job, GA. Thanks for the video.
Thanks! It was a fun project
This video, for whatever reason, just simplified the bejesus out of this process. Now to give it a go!
Awesome to hear! Good luck and make sure to let me know how it goes 😁
I like that, gotta make one now
Take care
Rob
Thanks! It's a fun little project and is both quick and uses up scraps. #winwin
Good job! Nice mallet.
Thanks Andy! It was fun to make and I really like the way all the different wood works together 👍 thanks for your support! 🍻
I’m a first time viewer I have only seen 0:18 seconds of the video and I stopped the video and I have to say !!!!!!! Thank you for not wasting a lot of my time not ever getting to the point . Your fast and get to the point to start the video THANKS
Thanks so much! If you like how quick that one was you will probably like my other videos because they are usually even shorter!
That wood combo is killer!
Thanks Dimitri! No need to go exotic when you have these 3 at your fingertips! 👍🍻
And the winner is....! You did it! With lead shot, too!! 😀😀😀
Haha thanks! Only took three months since we spoke about it. I felt like it wouldn't have enough weight without the addition of some metal! Thanks for watching 🍻
Great job Grant! I'd spend an hour overthinking how to do it in an hour
Hahahah luckily I didn't include the thought process while timing it! I actually felt that having the timer made me choose different methods (like cleaning up the glue with the table saw) I might keep that idea in my back pocket for the future. Thanks for watching 👍🍻
Great build
Thanks Emmett! Appreciate your support 🍻
Nicely done buddy!
Thanks David! 🔨🍻👍
I decided to copy this same method and if done right and taking longer then an hour. It actually works incredibly well
Glad to hear it worked out for you 👍 thanks for watching and commenting
@@TheGrantAlexander whoa, I wasn't expecting a reply haha. I think that the channel is very underrated by the way. Please keep up your incredible work man!
@@herfisis101 thank you very much 😁 and I try to reply to every comment I get ☺️
Very nice 👏
Thank you very much👍🍻
Great plan and execution. I don’t think I’ve ever built anything in under an hour. Very impressive!
Thank you! It's amazing what you can build if you challenge yourself (and maybe lower your expectations😂)
It's a beauty and impressively done in less than an hour! I agree, hard to beat the combination of maple, cherry and walnut. Nice work.
Thanks Corbett! It was really fun to make and I can see myself using it lots in the future. Thanks for watching 🍻
Nice Job !!!
Thanks!
That a really good job!
Thanks! I appreciate your support and kind words. Thanks for watching 🍻
I love the way your aesthetic values run through your projects. Keep on pounding.
Thanks Garnet! Much appreciated 👍🍻
A project that no doubt took 3 times longer to plan than execute... and both stages a great success!
Haha, if I had planned it that well it would have been how to make a mallet in 20 mins 🤣🤣
Nice looking mallet, even with the garage floor battle damage. 😜 I love the idea of a challenge, but my safety side freaked out a bit about doing things in a hurry around power tools.
Thanks and I agree that safety is a priority! I didn't rush anything when it came to cutting (as you can tell by how long the cuts took) The only part I feel I rushed was the sanding. Maybe you can try a 1 hour build with hand tools 👍👍🍻
Safety is the most important thing in my shop and that is why I made a point in my trailer for 1hourbuilds to say that I would never rush anything and that all cuts ect would be done at the same rate that they would be without the timer.
Just love seeing the evolution of your vids bro! Know this channel and you are going places!
Thanks Andrew, your comments are always appreciated! You are the best man 👍👍🍻🍻
Great job and a fantastic tool for the workshop 😊 ॐ
Thanks Yogi! It was fun to make and even more fun to use😁👍🔨
Hello. It's a product I've been thinking about doing for a long time. You really did it in a beautiful and wonderful way. It was fast. I will look at your video again when I plan to make this product that I plan to do in the following days. Congratulations
Thank you, I hope to see the video on your channel!
Great job man, Subscribed!
Thanks! I appreciate your support and I hope you enjoy my other videos as well 😁
Cool mallet
Thanks! It was fun to make 👍🍻
Looks great! Enjoyed the build!
Thanks Jeff! I appreciate your support. 👍🍻
Love the wood combo!! Great looking mallet and you smashed the time frame. Well done 🙌🏻😁
Thanks Kirstie! It's hard to go wrong with Walnut, Maple and Cherry. Thanks for watching! 🍻
Excellent
Thank you! 👍
Love it!
Thanks Bjamin!
Great job! I've built some mallets in the same way. I like the use of BBs for extra weight. I've done the same thing except I left them loose to make the mallet a dead blow.
Thanks! I might make another one to be a dead blow in the future but at the time I already had one (but it isn't as big #biggerisbetter)
That was a lovely job - the final shot makes a variation on "Dropping the Mike"! This film gives me an idea how I can adapt my rawhide mallet to a tool for "Knocking back" the spine of a book to round it when binding. Being an old codger I find it hard to make out your speech when there is music but that is just me! Thank you! Eryk 👍🔨😀
Thanks Eryk 😁 luckily i did that last shot after taking some nice pictures as it didn't look so nice after that. Finding new uses for old tools is always nice 👍 By the way I've gotten better at lowering the volume of the music when I speak, do hopefully it won't be as much of a problem in the future. Thanks for watching 👍🍻🍻
Great video! The mallet looks amazing. 👍🏻
Thanks for stopping by the channel and for the kind words! 🍻
That thing looks beautiful without even factoring in the time restriction. Great job!
Thanks! I think the time restriction helped make it beautiful (otherwise it would be another unfinished project in the garage) thanks for watching 🔨👍🍻
That's a great looking mallet! It's been on my list of things to make for a long time. Keep up the great work and videos 👍
Thanks! It was on my list for quite some time too. I think our lists look very similar! 😁🍻
Grant finally got a mallet! Well done my man. Love the wood combo. 👍
Thanks man! It was a fun build and it will come in handy in the future! 🔨🔨🍻
Excellent! I’m glad you put beads in there...I added bb’s to a carvers mallet and love that extra weight.
What a fun project!
Thanks Rob! You made yours a dead blow mallet if I recall correctly? One day I need to make a carvers mallet as well, but with the amount of carving I have done, I feel that is really low on the priority list!
The Grant Alexander that’s the one! I really don’t just carve with it, it’s just so much easier to whack things with it. 🤷♂️
@@MakeThings hahah! Well this one does the trick for whacking too! 🔨🔨
Very nice!!
Thanks! It was fun to make 🍻
Great work Mate, I read the comment about the dead blow mallet, Thanks for answering that 👍
Thanks for watching and for reading the comments so I didn't have to type it out again! 🍻
Damn son - all that in one hour! Including half a beer! I've got some materials set aside to make a mallet - didn't know it could be done in only an hour. Getting bandsaw operational - two years, using it to make a mallet - one hour.
Hahahah, I look forward to your mallet making video 🔨 I think you could get it done in less time while drinking more beer! thanks for watching 🍻
@@TheGrantAlexander I'll try .. the beer thing that is.😁🍺
That’s the best looking mallet I’ve seen - fantastic build! Love that you did it in an hour too. Cheers!
Thanks! It was fun to challenge myself. You should chat with Adam and do a 1 hour build challenge 😀
@@TheGrantAlexander Will do! We definitely need more 1-hour projects. These two-week ones are intense. Ha!
Nice work, the final result is better than the limited time would suggest.
Thanks Jacob! I was surprised at how well it turned out as well! ☺️
Loved seeing you use the shark pusher in this video :)
Thanks Caroline! Sharky is my best friend when I use the table saw :) 👍😁
Superb, both Thor & Odin are Proud of you Viking lol, well done mate & that 4 minutes left aided you to have 4 extra beeeers 🤓🤠🍺🍺🍺🍺👍👍👍👍

Such a nice mallet grant. Like mine it looks to nice to use.
I dropped mine and banged it up a lil, so I decided it was a user, not a wall hanger.🔨 Thanks for the compliment, I will have to make another to hang on the wall! 👍🍻
very nice build man, and within an hour. well done
Thanks Christophe! Are you going to try to do a 1 hour build? With all your fancy jigs I bet you can make quite a bit in under 1 hour!
Thanks for watching🍻
An hour? That would easily take me a day 😂😂
Is that because you don't have a proper workshop 😂😂 thanks for watching 🍻
@@TheGrantAlexander that's one of many reason brother.... What's the shots in it for anyway? Probs a dumb dumb question

@@TheGrantAlexander Challenge accepted!
@@JonesyNorthmen nice, can't wait! Don't forget to tag The Garage Woodworker when you make the video!
That is amazing that you did this under one hour! I would be sweating in the last 10 minutes 😅
Oh I was sweating during the build!! Thanks for watching 🔨👍🍻
Nice video good project congratulations on geting 250 subscribers last time I looked it was like 50 have you hit something yet just wondering if the wood glue will hold as I have not had best of luck with shear strength with wood glue
Thanks CJ! It's a good question about shear strength. This is the first mallet I have made, and I did a bit of research and saw many mallets made this way. I think with the amount of glue I used, and the amount of surface area it shouldn't be a problem. I think with woodburning it's a different story because of the different forces acting on the wood as it spins. But if it breaks I will let you know! Thanks for watching 🍻
Now that video was a load of fun to watch! Great job with the video editing. Oh yea... the mallet was really nice too! Other than juggling, can you use it for wood working? :-)
Thanks Poor Man! As you can see it isn't very good for juggling, 😂 I used it yesterday for the first time and it worked awesome! 🔨 I appreciate your support 🍻
Just in one hour so great 🤩
Sorry for my english I am french 😅
Nice job 👍👍
Merci! Je peux comprendre Francais, donc vous pouvez ercire en francais! Thanks for watching! 👍😎
Super Nice! When you cut plywood on your table saw, how many toothed-blade do you use to get as clean an edge as possible?
Thanks! I usually use masking tape and just a regular blade. But I'm sure Google has a better answer for you
VERY NICE VIDEO/ YOU HAVE THE DIMENSIONS OF THE BUILT????
Thanks! You can find all the measurements in the written guide here. www.instructables.com/Mallet-in-Under-1-Hour/
Great video! Did you pause the timer between steps to set up the camera for the next shot, or did the timer run continuously?
Thanks! Yes I did pause the timer between shots, I also didn't include glue drying times. Thanks for watching 🍻
Wow really nice job mate! Impressive 56 minutes! 👊👊 cheers
Thanks!🍻🍻 I actually worked up a sweat at one point (but that doesn't say much because I am quite out of shape) are you going to do a 1 hour build?
@@TheGrantAlexander i say yes! Not sure when. Maybe the beer caddy 😉 i have to many projects on my to do list and a bit busy with other things. But i really would like to do one 👍
Nice one Grant. I have to make 6 mallets in the coming weeks. Love this design. Was thinking of doing loose bearings inside to eliminate shock, but they have to be in one void in the middle, I would imagine
Thanks Pascal! I think two voids would work just fine, can't see why it wouldn't work. (But you are much more experienced than me) 6 mallets should be done in less than 6 hours right? Maybe even cut the time in half. Let me know! 🍻
Haha Grant. Maybe 3 hours. I am not any more experienced in non-rebound hammers than you, as I never made one, used one, or even seen one. The head should be kind of like a pipe filled with bearings with both ends having nylon or wood inserts that do the striking. Am sure I could maybe one from a 1.5" GI T-joint.
@@IrishChippy I like that idea! Can't wait to see the video 🔨👍
Did you say video? Crikes. Am planning to make a daruma from a $5 club hammer next. But before that, our school is officially opening tomorrow. Might do a bit of video footage of that. Please wish me luck.
@@IrishChippy good luck!
Hello, my talented friend. I made it, but I couldn't use it. I guess I didn't manage to make a very high quality. Your gavel was great. I watched curiously. congratulations. greetings..............
Thanks for watching. I hope my mallet holds up over time! 🍻
@@TheGrantAlexander I think it will withstand time.
Nice mallet Grant. Your contrasting wood choice looks great. You can always go back and work on the handle to make it more comfortable in your hand. For future mallets turned handles are great. That’s one of the first things I did on my lathe. I noticed at least a couple of times that you seem to stop the timer. Was the hour continuous or just while working on the mallet? Good video.
Thanks Don! One day when I get a lathe I will have to turn quite a few handles 😁 the timer only counts while I am working on it. Glue drying times didn't count (or else I wouldn't have been able to do it in an hour) if you check out the trailer for the 1 hour builds video on The Garage Woodworkers channel, he goes over it in detail. Thanks for watching! 🍻
The Grant Alexander that’s what I thought about the timing. It just wasn’t clear in the video. Obviously I need to watch the Garage Woodworkers video when I get a chance.
@@wb_finewoodworking I am sure you will enjoy his videos :)
Why the epoxi? If you left that out you would have had a nice looking dead blow mallet. Love the color combos, walnut is one of my favorite woods to work with.
I have a few dead blow mallets already (none this nice looking) but no solid mallets (just a mini-sledge hammer and it's a bit much for most things). I have enough bbs left over that I think I am going to make a dead blow hammer in the future! Thanks for watching, and I agree walnut is awesome, just wish it were cheaper! 👍🍻
Is wood glue enough to hold up to heavy work?
Yes it is😊 I've seen lots of tests that actually show that it is stronger than the wood if there enough of a contact patch between the two pieces.
@@TheGrantAlexander wow. Thanks for the reply going to make this mallet right now haha. Yours is gorgeous!
@@MegaMrsuperawesome happy to help! 🔨🔨
great build. What did size mallet did you make? I need to make one for my shop and like your idea.
Thanks! It's pretty big (probably a bit too big to be honest) the head approximately 7 inches long, 3 inches tall and a bit less than 3 inches wide. That would be the max I would use if I were making another one. Happy to answer any more questions, Good luck! 👍
The Grant Alexander thanks brother. Love your video’s. Guess I need to step my game.
The Grant Alexander why did you use epoxy and the ball bearing? I would have thought using them loose would give more of a dead blow feeling.
@@JkCanvas that is true, it would give that, but I already had a dead blow mallet, so I wanted something more solid feeling. But it would be a good idea for sure!
@@JkCanvas I appreciate the love!
How's she goin'? I'm not sure if this looks like Thor's Hammer or more like Maxwell's Silver Hammer!!! Either way, it's a nice job and will be very useful in the shop. When you use the teak oil, do you put anything on over it, or just the oil?
Thanks Mike! For the teak oil it depends on what I am doing. In this project it's just teak oil as I can easily re-apply over time. For the coasters I made recently, I added polyurethane for added protection. Thanks for watching and for asking a question 👍🍻
@@TheGrantAlexander Thanks for the answer!!!
How well do they hold up being glued together??
It holds up great! The glue is stronger than the wood 😁 (you can find many videos on CZcams demonstrating that)
@@TheGrantAlexander thanks for your fast reply, I shall check it out..
@@jakeyboy589 no problem! 👍😁
I want to build this and went to the instrcutables site but nowhere does it say what thickness wood to use.
Good catch! I am surprised no one has said anything in all this time. I will edit the instructable later today, but until then, the thickness of the pieces were approximately 1". It doesn't really matter if they are 1" or 7/8", the only thing that matters is that the middle pieces (walnut in my case) and the handle (cherry) are the same thickness. The outer pieces can be thicker or thinner depending on how big you want the mallet. Thanks for noticing that!
@@TheGrantAlexander Thanks Grant, appreciate it. I’ve looked at dozens and this one is the easiest and fastest build.
@@jacksawyer3626 good luck on the build. I'd love to see your mallet when you are done. You can either post it on instructables or message me on Instagram ☺️
@@TheGrantAlexander It may be a few weeks but I’ll have to post it here as I don’t use any social media at all.
What are the measurements for all the wood pieces before cutting? I'm doing this for myself.
If you would like all the measurements you can find them here www.instructables.com/id/Mallet-in-Under-1-Hour
Wow that's fast, thanks! Wait, are all the wood pieces 1 inch thick, same on width and length? Have to make sure.
@@jazzyboy3742 it didn't really matter if it's 1" or 3/4 as long as all the wood is the same thickness.
@@TheGrantAlexander I see I see, understood, thank you :D
No problem and good luck!
Is that with drying time?
No
hey great vid, can i suggest one thing for future it would be cool if the background music was slightly quieter so it was equal to when you speak or have the voice volume louder
Thanks for the suggestion! I do try very hard to match the audio levels when I edit, but I guess there is still work to be done. Can I ask if you were listening to the video through headphones or using a speaker? Thanks for watching, I appreciate your support 👍🍻
@@TheGrantAlexander hello I listened though my stero speakers , the music you volume when you was speaking was perfect
@@bespokebrisley3423 thanks for getting back to me. I will try and adjust it better for the future. Let me know on my next one what you think 👍😀
Cool video. I'm curious about the music: who is it?
Can't recall who it is, I believe I got it from the CZcams music library
Cool: it's good, groovy music@@TheGrantAlexander
I'm sorry to inform you that your audition for the Cirque du Soleil has not been successful. But excellent mallet. Do you really feel the extra weight of the lead shot is necessary? I have a couple of old mallets and they're just wood. Actually come to think of it I've always just assumed they were just wood... where's my metal detector? Nice vid mate, loved the Stones-style music at the start.
Hahaha, and now you know why I never joined the circus! I have picked up a couple of just wood mallets and they felt a bit light. I think it all depends on the wood you are using. A basswood mallet would need quite a bit of metal to make it usable! Thanks for watching 🍻
The Grant Alexander I've never come across basswood in the flesh but I've heard they use it for electric guitar bodies, presumably to keep the weight down. Is it expensive stuff?
@@MarkMcCluney it's not crazy expensive (less than walnut if memory serves) but it is very light. Usually people use it for carving, but it is a nice wood for other things too!
Hello, what are the measurements of the finishing product?
The head is 7"X3"X2 7/8" and the height including the handle is 13"
@@TheGrantAlexander Thanks man, noted! What about the measurements of all individual wood pieces before gluing them up together?
@@jazzyboy3742 it's in the link I sent you yesterday 😊
@@TheGrantAlexander I think I have found it, I was confused on what certain measurements meant are on each piece but I think I got it. :D
@@TheGrantAlexander Alright thanks man, hopefully I can get this project done for my construction class. :D
Not at all sure what the self imposed time of 1 hour has to do with anything - we are all only going to watch for 10-12 mins max ;
I think i would rather see something where a considerable amount of thought goes into execution - then condensed down to a video of about 10 mins
It is to show what can be done with limited time in the shop🤷 feel free to watch other videos that meet your expectations ☺️
Looks ridiculous, absolutely no style, and promoting alcohol consumption in a shop is irresponsible...diy hack
Thanks for being my first negative comment 👍 i appreciate your honesty and candour🍻🍻
The Grant Alexander I build custom waterfront homes for 30 yrs, still do , I don’t build crap for views and I don’t promote drinking around tools, great example for young trade school kids viewing. Try being responsible and try building a tool that will last 100yrs. Take pride in what you do, there are plenty of diy hack channels.
@@joeframer9642 I don't build things for a living, i sit behind a desk most days. I'd be surprised if this mallet didn't last 100 years as it's a pretty simple design. I also don't build crap "for views", i build crap because that's the level of talent I have. Not sure how I'm not being responsible in this video, beer comes out after the project is done?
