São Vicente is a pleasant village in the north of the Island set in one of the most beautiful valleys of Madeira. The municipality of São Vicente is home to a vast natural and cultural heritage, such as the Laurissilva forest, volcanic caves, and historical monuments. Sao Vicente is a small municipality on the northern coast of Madeira, and it sits in between Santana (known for the thatched houses) and Porto Moniz.
It is known for its volcanic caves as well as the church that sits prominently atop a basalt rock at the mouth of the small river that runs through the town. There are currently around 5,800 residents.
Not far from the town lie the Grutas de São Vicente, a network of caves that formed almost a million years ago during a massive volcanic eruption. Today’s visitors can walk the kilometre-long trail of excavated lava tubes before learning about their geological evolution and the island’s formation at the on-site Volcanism Center.
