You haven't, this is just a way of making your mermaid skirt using the slash and spread method. I have tutorials where also use free hand like cutting on the fabric directly

72 but it depends on how many yards you have. I used 4 yards. I normally cut my down part first so I can use the left over pieces for the upper part
