Allen, what bamboo do you have growing over there? I’m in 7a and looking to get a good amount of it started this year in some pots and a few corners in my back yard.
For a running bamboo, I would recommend the U.S. native arundinaria gigantea which is hardy to zone 5, any clumping bamboo in the fargesia genus would do well for you and you wouldn't have to keep it in pots or worry about it spreading
Do you ever protect your windmill palms without the aid of Christmas lights? I'm in Arkansas zone 7b and am considering trying a windmill palm. However, using lights for warmth isn't an option for me as I want the palm well away from the house. I have an area in the back of my yard that I plan on developing that tropical vibe.
You can cover without lights in 7b and probably protect the tree from dying. Once it gets a full trunk and growing 10+ fronds/year it will be good thru most of your winters but you still need to be prepared to protect if you want best results. I'd guess 2 out of 10 winters might be a problem
should i save up for a needle palm? I'm in zone 6 and trying to create a tropical style garden to model around my musa basjoos
Do you have dry or wet winters? Maybe some yucca rostrata for your area
