Everything you need to KNOW about WIRELESS charging on the iPhone 8 and iPhone X

  • So the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have wireless charging. That’s cool. It’s always nice to see Apple add new features into their iPhone lineup that *might make our lives easier.
I’ve never really been sold on Qi-charging but when Apple announced it for the iPhone 8 and X, I decided to take another look at Qi-charging. So I went and bought a bunch of chargers to answer the following questions:
    0:01:30 - What is Qi-wireless charging?
    0:04:06 - What’s the maximum charging distance?
    0:04:33 - Do I need Qi-wireless charging?
0:06:58 - What’s the difference between the Galaxy S8’s fast wireless charging and the iPhone 8’s?
    0:07:47 - What’s the fastest iPhone 8 charger?
    0:09:37 - What cases don’t work with Qi-wireless charging?
    0:11:49 - Which Qi-wireless charger should I get?
Out of the 8 chargers I bought, my goto charger is the Spigen 3-Core charger. Get it here: mreh.ca/2x7HgmU
The charger with the biggest charging gap was the Pictek. Get it here: mreh.ca/2x7HZ7B
So I’m going to answer all those questions in the next few minutes. So let’s get started.
The QI-wireless charging is a standard used by most wireless charging devices. There’s another standard called PowerMat that is gaining popularity but Qi is still the standard.
Every Qi-wireless setup looks the same. You have a pad that contains the transmitter coil that is plugged into the wall. Some products look better and feel heavier but Qi chargers can be very simple looking.
For the iPhone 8, all you have to do is put your iPhone over the center of the charging base and walk away. Make sure you put it in the center of the pad or else it won’t work.
When it comes to distance, older chargers theoretically can have a gap of 30mm, newer chargers have a gap of 45 mm. Again, this is theoretical because in our testing, the iPhone 8 reliably charged at a gap of 8mm with some chargers allowing for 11.5mm before the iPhone 8 charged.
Do you need Qi-wireless charging? If you want the full iPhone 8 and X experience, get a Qi charger. My guild lines for qi-charger placement would be anywhere the phone and you spend a lot of time together.
My biggest gripe is the size compared to just a cable. Sure the process is easier to charge your iPhone but now I have to keep the qi-charger area clear. I'm a messy person so this isn't going to work well for me.
My second gripe is the fact that I can’t use the device when it’s charging. Trying to hold a qi-charging puck while using your iPhone is a bad idea. If you’re gaming on your iPhone 8, there’s a good chance that your battery is going to drain quicker than the charge going into your iPhone from the Qi-charger.
When it comes to speed, I was actually surprised how little difference there was between chargers. Every charger I used charged at the same rate. On average, I would get 8-9% every 30 mins. I tried this with the Belkin BoostUp and Mophie Charging
I also did a speed test against a normal iPhone charger and the difference is very noticeable. In general, don’t use a Qi-charger on the iPhone 8 if you’re in a hurry.
How about the charge speed between the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus? Well, on the video, it looks like the iPhone 8 is charging much quicker than the 8 Plus but it also has a smaller battery.
Which cases work with Qi-charging? As I discovered earlier, the threshold is about 8-11mm which is a far cry from the 30mm-45mm but not many cases are going to add 8-11mm of space between the back of your iPhone and the charger.
Even the large cases like the UAG Monarch and X-Doria Defense Lux will allow your iPhone to charge through the case.
You’re going to have a bit more trouble charging your iPhone using odd shaped cases like the Loopy or products like the Ungrip and PopSocket.
The only cases that don’t work with Qi-chargers are ones with magnets. But not all magnetic cases. See the end of video for a list of cases that don't work.
Which Qi-Charger would I get? Out of all the ones I've used so far, I'd get the Spigen Qi-charrger. It comes in three cores so you don’t need to be as careful when placing your iPhone 8 down. It will allow you to charge it both landscape and portrait which is handy.
If you have a thick case like a wallet case, go with the PicTech. Sure it’s light, looks cheap, is cheap and comes in a nondescript brown box.

I had a 7 with a Mophie Charge Force case($50usd) and bought all the Mophie accessories @bestbuy such as the car vent and the desk charger as well as the ikea desk lamp. All worked great and had a great setup as I am a skip driver and always going in and out of car. I upgraded to an X and just stuck a small magnet in the apple silicone case. I find the phone's internal charging so slow that while on shift the phone says it is charging but Im losing percentage. I do not wanna get another Charge force case as they are pricey($100usd). I think I'll just take back my 7 and let my wife enjoy the X. Plus I do find it annoying working without the home button.

  • @PudgeFree

I only use wireless charing at work. I use a stand version, that way faceID works while it's charging. That way when I get a notification the phone unlocks and I can see it without any intervention on my part, but if I walk away from my desk, my coworker can't read my notifications because the phone won't unlock. It also makes it easier to charge throughout the day without constantly plugging and unplugging or picking it up and down, since I'd have to get a dock to have FaceID facing me. Qi is just easier. BUT at home I just use a cable since my place is pretty messy. I think they each have their pros and cons. Qi is easier for stationary use and power top ups, plugging in is better for portability and full charging.

If I want to use my phone on a low charge, it would be nice if I could quickly disconnect from the charging pad and plug directly into my phone. Until this feature is available, I have no interest in wireless charging, especially if I’m laying in bed looking at my phone before “lights out”. Great video btw! 😊

Great video! I’ve scrolled through some of the questions and comments here, but haven’t seen a direct answer to my particular question I’m about to ask. I just upgraded to the iPhone 10R ( from the iPhone 6Plus ) and am struggling with life now that I can’t use the MobArmor magnetic phone holder that I’ve grown accustomed to.
Or can I? I’m certain I’m not going to utilize wireless charging, as I’m never in one place long enough to set my phone down ( besides at bedtime when I’m perfectly content plugging it in via lightning port ). Does the magnet on the phone mount actually “damage” the wireless charging internals in the phone, or does it just “interfere” with wireless charging, and is otherwise relatively harmless? I have grown addicted to MobArmor line of mounts.

Nice video. I actually don't see benefits of wireless charging. Ok, you don't have to plug and unplug your phone, so you save 1 or 2 seconds, but you get a device much bigger than a normal charger. People say you can damage a phone by plugging but honestly speaking, I have never experienced it (although I have been using different phones extensively for many years). The only thing that sounds nice to me would be the possibility to load multiple phones on a single wireless charger.

I would say one of the best benefits of a wireless charger is reducing wear and tear on the charging port. Also because of the fact that it doesn't charge very fast usually around 2 and a 1/2 hours it's good to use them to charge overnight. Another benefit with the Increased charging time it is a lot easier on the battery and it doesn't get the phone as hot as the lightning or fast charge.

  • @AidanHU4L

The nightstand isnt such a great place for a wireless charger if you're planning to put it down there before you go to sleep, wireless charging generates heat inside your phone that slowly wears away at the circuitry and connections inside your battery, this will very gradually slow the speed that your battery charges and more importantly, effect the overall battery life of the phone. I'd say choosing not to but any wireless chargers just for this reason would be pretty paranoid, but ideally you'll wanna take your phone off that pad as soon as you're charged up enough.
This is one of the reasons I don't quite believe in the convenience of wireless charging. Sure its good if I'm in a hurry, but if I need battery fast why would I choose a method that charges my phone to like 70% in the same time a wire would get me to full. Add the fact that I can actually pick up my phone and send a text while a wire is charging it to the fact that it slowly kills your battery life and I dunno why the hell I got a wireless pad for this S8. Like you said, it's not actually a bad feature to add at all, its just kinda redundant

That is a disappointing performance for me.
I bought an iOttie fast charger mount expecting that it will charge faster than the cable charger. So far what I experienced it is only enough to keep the battery level (or + 4-5%) while the cable charges up my phone around 20% in half an hour.

This evening I bought the new version from Anker Qi Wireless Chargers: The White Version of their Vertical Charger, Power Adapter and Power Cable from Amazon.
I think Murphy is such a nice Dog that if I weren't such a big Cat Man, I sure would have a Dog like yours.

QUESTION!!! and also a big THANK YOU for an informative video. It answered all my questions except 1. I like my Pop Sockets, and usually mount them on the lower third of my device. I just got an 8 plus and I'm wondering how particular the Spigen is for horizontal positioning. I'm complicating the matter with a Hocase hard case w/silicone insert, but if I know I can position the phone a little off center horizontally and it will still charge, it might be worth trying.

So i tried Qi chargers when then first came out, I used for one because once they fully charged the phone they stopped so the phone would not be at 100% when I woke up. Do they trickle charge yet?

If you want to start using a wireless charger with an iPhone8, do you have to go into your phones settings and enable wireless charging, or is it automatic if the phone senses the charger?

Hey thanks for another great detailed video.....in conclusion what case would be best for maximum protection but most importantly compatible with the magnetic car mounts??? (Also able to wirelessly charge with the case on)
I too big fan of magnetic car mounts for ease of use. :)
    Thanks.

Hi, I'm Brazilian, sorry for my English! The iPhone charges 7.5W on iOS 11.2, is it possible for it to load with 15w with a software upgrade? Or just with new hardware? Thank you!

The new Samsung fast charger charges the iPhone faster than any other wireless I’ve used. It charges the same speed as using the iPad 12 watt charging block.

Great video thanks. How does the magnet from the car chargers affect it. Or do you have a recommendation on car charger? I got one of the wireless ones but it doesn’t stay mounted. Where my old magnetic based one did. I really liked it. But I’ve read conflicting reports that having the magnet can heat up the phone and possibly cause a fire. Thanks.

Thanks for the comprehensive review! Based on this I think I’m going to hold off on investing on wireless charging... at this point you could achieve the same thing with multiple chargers around the house. Question: why use wireless chargers for data sync (your comment on AirPower)? Why not just stick to wifi?

What app are you running that shows the battery levels on the screen? The circle with the percentage showing? I put a metal plate in my case so it sticks in my car. I can get my Qi charger to work but had to relocate the plate to the bottom section of the case so as to allow the magnet to get to it.
    Thanks for the great review.
