I wish more vocal coaches emphasize this. Everyone focuses so much on breath support, breath support which does you no good if you aren’t starting the sound off correctly.

Try speaking in vocal fry for a whole day and see what happens... I tried it hik-hik-hik, then try singing the lowest Sub-woofee-Base notes, then try singing the high songs you used to sing if you could still sing it... hik-hik-hik... But don't panic you could still sing it after vocalizing, it will come back :)

I found last night, I was just yelling things in higher pitches to mess with my dog, and it felt really natural and not strained. And when I thought about it while doing it, I tried to remember the feeling and how I was doing it. Think it has helped a lot. Had to walk this early morning to work (an hour walk) and i was able to sing very easily with even the higher notes. So hopefully I've improved.lol. Still need to record my voice to be sure it doesnt sound nasally or something.lol.

I had this problem before and I kind of still do but I don't unconsciously show it as much now as I did then. I have a low speaking voice which my classmates sometimes point out to tease me which makes me self conscious and wish I didn't have one. Personally I consider having a low voice both a blessing and a curse. Just to give you some scale, my voice can go as low as E2 which makes me thankful that it isn't lower than that. Over time, I accepted the fact that this is the voice I was born with and I can only improve on it but I can't change it. So embrace your speaking voice and improve, you'll be thankful to have it eventually...

I was never a huge fan of mine either - but now that I started studying bel canto, it turns out my "natural" speaking voice is just all wrong and destructive in various ways, and that's what's been holding my singing back. I suddenly have resonances and power I never imagined possible. :-O

Oddly enough, this is so much more of a struggle for me than singing "classically," LOL. I think it's because of how I learned/taught myself. I default to that open, head-voicey soprano sound; rather than something more casual and forward-sounding. I'm trying to re-learn with my speaking voice, and this video was super helpful. Thanks, Freya! Been watching you for years, and you've never disappointed. Wishing you the best!

When you mentioned the thing about the lady who always speaks in her head voice, it made me wonder if that's something you'd have to be intentionally doing, or is it something you might be doing without realizing? One thing I'm sort of struggling with is identifying when I'm using chest, head, or mixed voice, and I'm trying to get more familiar with when I'm going into different registers.

The Problem I have, my natural speaking voice is very deep and breaks while speaking all the time, so the thing I do for more than 4 years now is, that I speak very high pitchy, even if I'm a grown up guy. But rather I speak with a higher pitch than breaking like 5 times in one sentence. Dont know how to fix that problem. The next problem I have is when I speak in my natural speaking voice I speak very airy and alot with my nose. Dont know how to fix it aswell. :D

This was very interesting! I find that I place my voice differently depending in what situation and mood I am. I have been noticing how I usually get a tired voice as well as a dry feeling in my throat from speaking on the phone for a while. While serving customers in the pub where I sometimes work I have caught myself placing my voice higher (also my larynx, I think), almost flipping into head voice at the end of sentences. I try to relax more and so lower my pitch slightly in that situation, but I am not sure which is the most natural way for me to speak in a loud environment (I am guessing the most natural placement would also be the most healthy).
Any thoughts on phone speaking and speaking in loud environments, any tips on how to deal with it in a healthy way? I would like to still be in good singing shape even after a work shift or phone call!
    Thanks Freya!

"pay more attention to what you do when you speak" see.. there's this little problem here.. I don't. I don't usually do that.. and when I do I talk in three different voices. My "normal" voice is how I speak to my mom, a very high voice when I talk to strangers (I don't like that about myself but what a shy bean gotta do) and a very stomach-y voice, I use that when I'm being malicious... it's a part of my villain persona with an evil laugh and all.
also my last music teacher in school asked us if we know what our voice is and to people who said they didn't know she said "you sound like xxx when you talk, let's try that and we'll see"
also also what if I hear my own voice completely different to what people hear? I only ever recognize myself on recordings by the words said rather than my voice even if other people sound the same and I like "dang, do people really have to listen to THAT??"

also to addition: what if I have vocal fry 50% of the time I talk? 😂 and what if I hate my high pitched voice and try to train my voice to be naturally lower because that sounds much more like me? I've actually been attempting to have a lower voice than I do since I was 5 and so far no luck, help 😅
(disclaimer I might be itsy bitsy tipsy tonight, I don't care if I have bad grammar or typos and I'm aware there might be)

My family has a pattern of nasal talking.... my sister had her adenoids removed and at first we thought that she needed her tonsils removed. So that has an impact on my singing because my throat gets dry easily. It's like I have seasonal allergies all the time. I have a lot of mucus build-up. I don't know my natural placement. I feel like when I do my high notes my mouth dries and I always keep water near me and when I do high notes my voice feels tired and over-worked. Can you give me some advice?
Edit: how should I go about maybe getting my adenoids removed?

this was great - thank you. I'm still confused. I'm just learning to sing. I think I'm an alto bc my voice is low and those are the notes I can hit with my normal talking voice (somewhere between alto and contraalto). but am I supposed to be using that talking voice singing or do I switch into the "singing voice" that is not the voice you would talk in but lets you go higher?
