  • Experiment. Plant red potatoes in late August early September and see if they make potatoes. I know, crazy. But check out what happened. No bug damage and no disease damage like the spring planting.

This is exactly what I was looking for today! I've got red potatoes that sprouted in the fridge and hoping to plant them tomorrow. We're zone 7 in North Alabama. Thank you for posting this!

Thank you. The cold snaps knocked out my spring potatoes 3 times. But the 4th planting is growing and looking good. Now if the heat will hold off for them to make potatoes.

You have sunshine in the fall. That's why. If you have no sunshine and only rain in the fall, you don't get anything.

Very nice potato haul! Well done. Ours didn't make it to December but we had some November potatoes in zone 5. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing this. Something killed off my spring potatoes early. Then it got super hot so I didn't replant. Then a new potato plant sprung up Aug 25 (zone 7). So I dug around and found 46 potatoes in the first 2 grow bags and tubs. Harvested those and planted more.
My local farmer friend said they wouldn't make because potatoes take 100 days. Looked up the early variety I planted and it says 75-90 days (and that is in the cool often too cold for growth spring). So based on that + your video I'm feeling pretty optimistic.

Do you by any chance know the name of this variety? I tried to plant in August a few times, but they were killed by late blight before they even had flowers.

Norwich? Red Norwich? They are supposed to be the best ones to grow here in Georgia where the high humidity makes every blight and fungus have a convention every summer. Mine actually did better as a fall crop than the normal spring planting. I do not know why I have missed out on this second crop for so many years.
