As a teacher Matsuev accompanies many young pianists, and he cannot have such a perfect memory for all their repertoire, as he also has his own one. Here he reads the music half way through from the score, which is harder than memorizing, actually.
@@Soundofmusic777 You're right. He has to have it very close to memorized to play like this. He's using the score as guidepost, not reading it.

I did not intend my remark to be critical of M. Matsuev. I hope you did not take it that way.
I agree - he worked and she just played. If you know this score by Witold, you'll see how many more notes he has to play than she does - quite a lot more. It is quite dissonant and full of tone clusters so he can miss notes here and there and nobody will be the wiser. Nevertheless, one does try to be as accurate as possible. :-)

Dear Alexandra, thank you so much for all the hard work you put into your art for it has made me a better man. How? Observing your skill in your interpretation of music - attacking the keys that need struck or dancing ever so lightly as one's fingers frolics amongst the keys - I (as an aging composer over here in far flung Florida) realized that if young Sasha can do that, I need to do better. So, I refocused, practiced harder (with you (and little Chloe Chua (violinist from Singapore)) as inspirations) improved my own compositions, my own musical gifts to the world. This I have found to be true - let alone the joy you and a few others like Chloe bring to one who never had any children of my own, but like an proud uncle, delight in watching your growth as artists of the next generation. Thank you again, best wishes and prayers that you continue to be a blessing to the world and maintain the regal yet humble spirit you currently portray. P.S. I hope you and Chloe could meet and perform together one day.

Surprising that Mr Matsuev needed the printed music while Ms Dovgan didn’t! How lovely that performance was. They are a credit to the Russian School of Music and to their country. Thank you for sharing this with us; left a big smile on our faces.

@@Soundofmusic777 I am an idiot and I have never played the piano, so forgive me for saying this. I think Matsuev is very capable of playing without any sheet music, as is most every talented pianist that play and play and play. I am not sure why any would have sheet music other than a long standing habit. He and others should trust themselves to play with complete "awareness", not sure that's the right word but it should show what I mean.

Ignorant statement about his needing the music. First, he is the conductor of the two, and there are reminder notations of pacing and other emphasis, timing, etc., and he is charged with keeping it on track with the score. Also, you will notice, as others have, he rarely looks at the printed page - it is there if he wants it, not because he needs it. Lots of musicians, conductors, keep the printed score front and center to assure they stay on track and pay it with the correct emphasis, etc. JT
