  • Brian Wilson had brought orchestral instruments into the Beach Boys before; strings, and even full orchestras for the Christmas Album. But in his standard, day-to-day production, Brian rarely strayed beyond Rock and Folk instruments that had dominated his tracks since the beginning.
Here, as is representative of the Today album as a whole, we get a bit of a major turning point, when Brian started to bring instruments into his productions that were more common in the orchestra hall than in Western Studios No. 3. Now, Brian's uses of the English Horn, and the French Horn, on Kiss Me, Baby might not have been especially idiomatic to those instruments, but he seems to have gotten the idea and used them in a way that suits the track. Certainly this is a stepping stone in Brian's journey to maturity as an arranger. And, even as a stepping stone, it still ends up being a beautiful track.
