@@UtahFishingChannel Good day to you. What's the product name? As i am from South Africa, Can i perhaps buy this item online? Will be happy to hear from you? Thanks for this video , keep it up
i mashed down all of my barbs at the beginning of summer and it has had no affect on the number of fish I catch. I was surprised...and now releases are way faster and much less damaging
Great job with this video. Best info, great stats. I learned a lot and hope I can save more fish with your hints/suggestions. I'll employ everything you taught me.
Great question! Whenever you fish with bait, it’s a good idea to hold your fishing pole and reduce the slack in your line. This way, you can detect the bite sooner and set the hook before the fish has time to swallow. If a fish does swallow the hook, it can sometimes die of the stress it’s insides experienced during the fight (the time you took to reel it in). The best thing to do in every case is to land the fish as fast as you possibly can with a net. Holding a fish out of the water by the fishing line can be very damaging to the fish, especially if it has swallowed the hook. After you’ve quickly landed the fish in a net, if you notice it has swallowed the hook (past the back of its tongue), quickly cut the line as close as you can to the fish’s mouth and let it go without trying to pull the hook out at all. Fish can often dislodge the hooks themselves. Letting the fish keep the hook (once it has been swallowed) gives the fish the best chance of survival. It’s also important to realize that even if you do everything right, accidents still happen, and sometimes fish that are caught and released do die. I don’t think you need to feel too guilty every time that happens. In my opinion, the important thing is that we do our best with the knowledge we have to release healthy fish. Which you are doing!
Thank you! I have been trying to figure out what the best thing to do is when the fish swallows the hook. I do have a quick question for you though. If there is blood when the fish swallows the hook does that mean it's better off to keep the fish or will it still survive by just cutting the line? Does it depend on how much blood you're seeing ?
Glad to hear this helps! Great question. It depends on where the fish is bleeding from. If it's bleeding from the gills, it's most likely going to die very soon. If it's bleeding from the mouth, it has a better chance of survival, but is still at risk. I'd try to keep any fish that are bleeding from the gills for sure (where that's legal of course).
The high 60s is not too warm to fish for rainbow trout, but it can be for brookies. I have no idea how you made your conclusion, but I'd move it up about 8 degrees F for surface water measurements.
@@UtahFishingChannel it would be good to be more specific. I can show you rainbows that do fine with catch and release into the upper 70s, but that is not the norm.
So I have a curious question if a person were to catch a trout and release it back and it accidentally dies will the said person be in trouble or would it just be out of a person's control?
@UtahFishingChannel oh ok I didn't know especially for states like Tennessee for an example cause they're really strict and serious about the fishing over there
Any net that’s not a rubber net will remove the slime coat from any species of fish doesn’t matter trout or not have a rubber net also wet your hands on any fish below the mature age as fish learn to regrow their slime coat during the spawn
Great advice and thank you for making this video. One of the most frustrating things seen in fishing videos is fishermen obsessing over a fish and holding it for far too long. This includes fishermen who think they're doing the fish a favor by continuing to hold them in their hand, in the water, as the fish is struggling to swim away from their grip. Seriously, what is their obsession. Get over it, clown! Typically these are the same idiots who can't help but call every fish they catch, "beautiful." The fish all look the same. Let it go!
A humane and scientifically informed fisherman, refreshing, thanks for the info man! I'm a newbie so this is great!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Couldn’t agree more with Dr. Brule. This is a great video and has helped me understand better handling. Thank you :)

Hi, fishing newbie here. When you said “Keep” the fish do you mean in a tank, or to eat?
To eat :)
More people need to see this... lol

If the fish is bleeding from the gills, you will see quite a bit of blood. If the fish is bleeding from the mouth, there's usually a lot less blood.
@@UtahFishingChannel what if it's not legal? Are you just suppose to leave it for dead?
@@TopBananaMan Yeah... kinda dumb :|

Research studies. I didn't specify which trout I was talking about... but I usually stay on the safe side.

Mistakes have been made...
Ha ha. Same here.
I release Trout right into the frying pan.
That works too.
I'm here because I caught 3 trout and when I tried to release them they all died :(
That’s rough. We’ve all been there. Good on you for researching it further!
I have eaten almost everything I caught. :D
Do the fish a favor and just dont do this silly sport.
