I like Polyphia, but you people are overreacting a bit aren`t you? He`s good, but i`ve seen him fail miserably at improvising over normal backing tracks. He`s no god yet...
I mean...Buckethead, but Henson's a monster for sure
@@nep8463 Polyphia does a lot more than that, though. You don't get many bands combining pop, hip hop, metal and jazz with this much technicality. I think the way they're 'groundbreaking' is in them actively destroying the concept of a band being defined by its genre. They're not the only ones, but they've got the aesthetic and social media presence that sets them apart from other 'experimental' music.
I think its a mixture of nylon strings, the guitar itself, and his playing technique. He palm mutes a ton, laces this entire track with harmonics, and even when he isn't palm muting he keeps it nice and staccato. It does sound super unique, though. Scott's track on this song is equally impressive. The way they are able to intertwine their parts is composition at its finest. This band is a treat to see live, as well. The real deal.

All of the hybrid picking in this song is the thing that really gets me as it's a really difficult technique to master.
When I first started playing around with guitar, I used to lay it flat on my lap. I'd essentially "hybrid pick" without realizing what it was. This level of playing is way beyond me though.
The unsung hero of that track is that guitar triplet with the "pop" snyth sound with the reverb on it at 2:15

Right when the beat drops and he does that first guitar solo run He’s actually simulating a 🔥 ass rapper coming out hard AF and slaying!
