Months later I shared my top and bottom choices from the Historical doll line ( • Best & Worst American ... )
And now, I'm happy to finally offer my favorites (and least favorites!) from all the Truly Me meet outfits. I'd love to know your thoughts, so be sure to let me know where we agree or disagree in the comments!

Looking through the Truly Me outfits is an interesting exploration of the history of AG fashion, their perceived audience, and how both their perception of their audience and their company finances have changed.
I love the quality in the earlier outfits with the exception of peeling vinyl and flaking shoes. The most recent outfits and the dolls with the colored hair appeal to a more modern audience, and the t-shirt dresses have allowed AG to not raise the price of dolls by $50. If you want to spend $50 on a more detailed outfit, the buyer can decide when to do that and pick the outfit/s.
I'll give you that - AG's new ho-hum t-shirt dresses are a smart financial move - as long as they stay the heck away from those plastic shoes with chunky glitter, I'll keep my complaints to a minimum.
@@agtakesover Lol! When the new TM dolls were an expected release it was noted that there were different outfits. I first wondered if they were being sold in their underwear and the buyer could pick one of the new outfits…or not. Well, they do look better in the box wearing something beyond underwear.
Yes, most Truly Me meet outfits are in like a 9+ way tie for the bottom! I agree with your top 3, except I'd put the Mix 'N Match outfit as #1 because I had the girl outfit as a kid (but not the doll outfit, which I finally have as an adult!), so I'm a little biased. My only complaint is that the shoes stained my doll (she's literally getting her stain treatment right now 😥), but I still love the outfit the best!
My bottom 3 outfits would be that hideous Lilac dress that I have soooo many of, the True Spirit outfit with the literal baby style T-shirt (wtf AG?) and those random boots, that yes, somehow unwittingly made it into my collection, and finally the Show Your Sweet Side outfit which is the most hideous combination of floral and animal print. I ripped that dress off my 117 when I got her and it's never seeing the light of day again! I also want to say that way too many meet outfits have those awful plastic glittery slip on sneakers!
Yes, those glittery plastic shoes are trash! And I knew I wasn't the only one so consistently underwhelmed by the TM meet outfits lol.
My favorite meet outfits got today’s dolls were from the 1990s-early 2000s. That when I started getting AG dolls. These last few years, the meet outfits are not up to par for what AG can create. Great video! Very interesting.
I think a LOT of ppl's favorites are from the time when they first got into AG, but it's hard to imagine the kids getting into AG today looking back on that weird eyeball dress with nostalgia and calling it their favorite lol.

I really surprised myself with that one, because as an ensemble I like the red vinyl jumper more...but I think all the separate pieces are so flexible and YAY for a break from pink ;-)
I love these kinds of videos! I'd love to see you rank the GOTY and historical collections! I don't know if you've done a video like this before, but another cool idea could be going through the truly me line's outfits through the years - like one video could be ranking or even just discussing each outfit that was released for Truly Me in 1995, then the next could do 1996 (or even just 2000 and do an every 5 years comparison.) I do think this could be hard though because as far as I'm aware there aren't any online resources that have archived every single release from 1995 till now - AG play things had the perfect system going but I believe they stopped in 2015. What can I say, I just love a nostalgia blast!
The American Girl wiki is pretty comprehensive in its list of Truly Me outfits, so I think I could do that. It would be pretty labor intensive though, so I'm gonna keep it on the back burner and ponder it for a bit.

Oh my.. you heart my heart with the Ready for Fun outfit 😂😂😂 But only because my favorite doll, my 6.2, miss Josephette came in that outfit, and I got her from the Chicago store for my 14th birthday in 2005, so its true that I do have a very fond nostalgia for it, It was like a physical blow, which makes me laugh out loud in retrospect, because that's really how much I value your opinion and adore your channel, but thank you for you honesty, and for putting number one worst in its justifiable place lol and your top 2 are accurate af!! The Urban Outfit was the outfit that came on my first AG doll I got in 5th grade so thank you for that!
I know, I know! I feel like everyone likes that Ready for Fun outfit and I just can't make myself appreciate it. I do think a lot of it is the nostalgia it unlocks for so many collectors and I LOVE that for them! I'm glad we're in agreement about that worst one and sorry for the gut punch of my slamming your fave ;-)

I can’t believe the lilac dress and the two after it didn’t make it into the worst! Those are the three I have SOOO many of and they are AWFUL! That lilac dress can barely mix and match with anything! I also really hate the one that 122 was wearing, that definitely deserved a bottom spot!
Also I love the ready for fun and I like your style! They’re super nostalgic but those dresses with the jackets are sooo bad 🫣
The problem is SO MANY of them deserve to be at the bottom lmao.
We just got the shoes from the Ready for Fun outfit (again) in a random lot a few days ago. It's everywhere lol.
@@agtakesover I’ve actually never received any pieces from that outfit in the 11 years I have been collecting! I do see it in lots SOOOO often though, especially the shirt and shoes

No offense to anyone who like them but I do not like the Truly Me Meet Outfits line but at least at the beginning of the Truly Me era they were more generous with the piece of clothings hehe...
Anyway I love the TM dolls and the opportunity to imagine all that we pleased for each character 💜
Agreed - it's a pretty weak line in terms of meet outfits, but they were at least more generous at the beginning.
Thanks for sharing your thought on the meet outfits. I was surprised which one you chose as the top meet outfit. Truthfully I never really gave the meet outfits much tough. The only one I did not like was the one with the random eye print. It was creepy.
I surprised myself with the top one lol. As an ensemble, it's not my favorite (I'd pick the red vinyl one just on looks of the overall outfit) but for mix and match purposes, I think it just won me over. And yeah...the eye print is just weird.
My favorite meet outfit is the Girl of Today one from 1995. I dressed like that in Jr. High. My mom made me a sunflower hat that was forest green and black. I wish I still had it. I liked the urban outfit when it came out, but I wasn't collecting AG at the time. I thought that AG should have included jeans instead of the long skirt. The hoodie and vest were spot on with what a lot of real girls were wearing at the time. I wish the new meets included jackets.
On the one hand, I wish the new meet outfits included jackets, but on the other hand they'd probably be ugly. Maybe a bracelet or necklace (or both!) instead would be better.
I think that the tights In Julie new school dress would look nice with the truly meet dress with the blue jacket

Your bottom 3 I totally disagree with 🤣 I love the ready for fun jeans! They are so fun! They show your wild side I think is fun when dressed in an alternative way to lean into an edgy look. Also the my ag boots my hot tip is to fold the socks over the top to hide the green
The next (inevitable) time I get a pair of those in a lot I will definitely try your socks tip!
LOL! I actually hate the Urban Outfit out of all the TM Meets. I personally call it the Mid-Life Crisis Outfit because I find that the doll wearing this outfit looked like she already gone through a tough divorce, her kids are teens and being rebellious, and she was stuck in this thankless corporate job where she cannot leave since she has bills and mortgage to pay. To each their own. I love the Mix and Match Outfit. For some reason, it reminds me of the girl from Blossom. It was definitely her aesthetic.
LMAO - I surprised myself with this one, too. I don't like it as an ensemble, but I like the pieces individually. And I'm such a mix-n-match person that this factored heavily in my decision. That and the fact that there were a few pieces I would use with my boy dolls and AG is so bad about giving us enough gender neutral or "masculine" options ;-)
12:48 I can say that I never have had any part of the True Spirit outfit. Honestly, I didn’t know they had names beyond the meet outfit. I particularly hate this one for the onesie sleeved shirt. I’ve seen some cute outfits with the boots though.
No one loves the onesie style of that shirt lol. Someone told me their hack was to fold socks over the top of the boots to hide the butterflies and now I want to try that (but only if I ever get stuck with these boots in a lot again!)
I’ would love a collection best and worst!!
It would take a LOT of time and work, so it's not going to be high on my list, but I *would* like to do it, so I'm sure I'll get to it eventually.

Laughing out loud at the true spirit outfit commentary. I definitely have the boots even though I just started collecting last year 😂😂. They came in a lot. And I have yet to use them. 😂

You practically can't avoid those boots. Someone shared that they fold tall socks down over them to cover up the butterflies. Maybe try that?

I know, I know - I'm killing people over her when I'm slamming the outfits that come from a heavy nostalgia era of their lives. I'm sorry! The skirt's okay but it doesn't tend to hold the pleats well enough to look nice. Nothing wrong with the boots if they wouldn't peel. And I apologize but I just don't like the shirt at all. We can still be friends, though ;-)

I think it’s really interesting you put the 2012 true spirit meet outfit in the mid to upper tier. When it came out, the collectors in my circle HATED this outfit (I am not exaggerating) and said the top looked like a onesie. I don’t mind the skirt and boots but don’t care for the top.
I just love the Go Anywhere Outfit, it reminds me of something my best friend wore during that time. Also wow it’s amazing how detailed it was!! I’ve never seen the First Day Outfit in person but the yellow jacket always looked like felt to me. I have no strong feelings about the 2006 I like your style outfit though it’s not one I’d buy. Oooo controversial about the Ready for Fun one! 😂 It’s not my favorite but I do like it especially tue hoodie and jeans (though I don’t think they go together) I agree with your worst one, just why, why why why why???!!! Those eyes 👀 👀 👀
The 1995 Mix and Match outfit just makes me think of Blossom though I do like the long sleeved white shirt. I know everyone likes the Red Vinyl Jumper but for some reason I’ve never really cared for it though I do now see there are several neutral pieces you can use for it. A lot of collectors I know love the 2000 urban outfit and I like it too 😊
Yeah, I thin in terms of quality and detail, the Go Anywhere outfit would win for me. In terms of my favorite ensemble *as is*, the Red Vinyl Jumper probably wins, but I picked with mix-n-match purposes in mind and especially thinking about how seldom AG gives us gender neutral or "masculine" items. The fact that the hoodie and vest from the Urban Outfit could work on ANY of my dolls (boys incl) is what convinced me to put it as 1st.

I totally agree with your worst dress. The eyeball dress is the worsted one of the lot and the shoes are hideous! I was super excited to get my 122 from Costco to avoid a second one if this outfit.
You didn’t include the boys meet outfits. I like the new boys meet, maybe not the shoes as much. What is that weird stuff material they are using for boots/high tops now?
You're right. I didn't include the boys' outfits. I will say this - as a line, I think consistently mid-range to upper mid-range. I don't think there are any big FAILS like there are in the girls' meet outfits.

We are in agreement on the worst. That eyeball dress is a monstrosity and not even the shoes are cute. Like, I don’t enjoy any of the others from that line, really, but I’ve gotten a lot of use out of the pink sandals from the sweet side outfit, and I actually love the shoes from the sporty outfit and the camo one- I don’t have either of those two and don’t want to buy them separately when I only want the shoes (I PARTICULARLY dislike camo print,) so I’m hoping to someday buy the shoes on their own… or that they release dolls wearing them that are must haves for me 😂. I also really don’t like the real me and I like your style outfits, both of those shirts are so ugly! My top three are the first three they made, partly for nostalgia- that’s when I was collecting as a kid. And they just don’t make em like that anymore! I really don’t think there’s been a “good” one since go anywhere. Also just for clarity’s sake the hats didn’t come with the dolls for those early outfits, they were part of the accessories. I have the denim hat with the sunflower and the beret that went with the vinyl jumper, but when they released the first day outfit, the accessories were the same as the mix and match aside from the hat, so I didn’t get them. (Also if you’re wondering, my vinyl jumper didn’t make it, lol. So I was truly living my best when they rereleased it for Nicki.)
Yes, you're right - the hats (and I believe purses and necklaces??) were part of the accessories of those older meet outfits. And I agree - in general the shoes from all the current meet outfits are way cuter than the dresses.
I think they make the meet outfits so terrible that people NEED to buy at least one extra outfit with the doll. They are obviously saving money rather than raising prices. Yikes. I did like the first 5 or 6 outfits. They weren't all my favourites but they all had good pieces in them.
I actually love the "Go Anywhere" outfit. Those colours speak to me.
The "First Day" outfit was crazy but so fun for young girls and it shows it's era well. I can't dislike it. Probably some nostalgia for me.
The "Ready for Fun" outfit was super cute IMHO
The "Mix and Match " outfit - an obvious great outfit. The short was amazing.
"Red vinyl Jumper" outfit might be my favourite. My daughter had a dress like me version with the tight, a regular fabric red jumper. Ours never peeled, by the way.
And the "Urban outfit"was great as well.
Truth - cheap uggo meet outfits do kind of force ppl to buy something else lol.

Yes, the show your wild side outfit is truly awful. I despise that print. The I like your style outfit is cohesive which is more than I can say for the true spirit, girly graffiti and lilac dress meet outfits. I don’t get the turquoise shoes with lilac dress, the tan boots paired with a grey and pink skirt outfit make no sense to me (especially the lime green butterfly) and the girly graffiti with the bright purple shoes is just not right. Those shoes match the doll’s bright hair color better than the darker purple accents in the strange top. I think the only piece I like of the go anywhere outfit is the striped tee. I do like the red vinyl jumper and have both versions. I wish my og version wasn’t so cracked and peeling. I like the grey striped hoodie of the urban outfit and I hope to eventually get the go anywhere outfit. I like the zebra dress but the plastic boots bring it down unfortunately.
I agree with pretty much every assessment you've made - especially about the least cohesive outfits. If I weren't considering mix-n-match potential, my answers would've likely been a bit different (ex: red vinyl jumper outfit definitely would have been ranked higher than the urban outfit).
Ouch!!!!! I'm so sad that you hate the I Like Your Style and Ready for Fun outfits 😢 those are so nostalgic to me, my very first doll came in the I Like Your Style outfit. The show your (camo) outfit is so much worse IMO. Also you left out the newest plaid shirt dress outfit.
I know, I know! I'm breaking hearts over here slamming some of those earlier meet outfits. Here's the thing, though -you've been a collector a lot longer than I have and you *do* have nostalgia from buying dolls in those outfits. It makes total sense. I do not. I was introduced to AG after those outfits. Also, remember I said if I had my druthers it would be a 9-way tie for the bottom lol. In general, I just don't think the TM meets are good. And I surprised even myself with my top pick because I don't like the Urban Outfit *as an ensemble*. My brain just went into mix-n-match mode and decided there was the most mix-n-match potential with that one.
Also, good catch about the plaid dress! I filmed this before that even came out, and then I DID go back and edit it to add the plaid outfit (mid-range btw) but I must've uploaded the original version. Shoot!
@@agtakesover Haha valid! The older outfits do mix and match better, but to me they also are very 90s style. It's funny, as a kid I liked the majority of the truly me outfits I saw (except the pink top and grey skirt one... why does the shirt have the flaps of a baby onesie??), but now looking back I do have to question some of the stylistic choices...

I still remember walking through the store immediately after the new TM dolls came out and starting to actually cry because half the store was decked out in the new dolls and the other half still had the outgoing dolls and I remember looking at 85 and 80 and 67 and maybe a couple others and thinking, "Kids DESERVE to have these dolls and the representation is shrinking, and AG didn't even have the decency to remove them slowly and give ppl a heads-up." (of course, they have brought them back from the vault for sales several times over the past year and a half, but I didn't know that then).
