I worked as a manager at QT convenience stores for about 8 years. Our studies showed that 10% steal no matter what, 60% if they believe that they can get away with it and 30% never do. That's why we say, "Hi" when you walk in. It's not to be nice and friendly, it psychologically puts customers in the mindset that they are being watched. We still had tons of theft, in December 2013 I lost 396 double Snicker's bars because we had to merchandize them near the soda fountains on an endcap where we didn't have direct line of sight. We used to call it the "free candy rack" Upper management didn't like that I would only keep 4-5 bars there after that month. I told them when you stop blaming me for the shinkage I'll fill it back up. Never did still lost 30-40 bars a month after that. So glad I quit working there.

Gas station near me has ALL the candy behind the plexiglass check out. I can murder a King Size Snickers but stealing one is not in my m.o. In fact when I leave Lidl with one in my hand I have it with the receipt above waist height in my hand. Snickers in front of the receipt. We are a minority majority community that is frequently in the news for retail theft. I like the 1lb bricks of ground beef. So do a lot of others apparently as they now have security labels on them. Gotta get out of this place.

Just curious because I'm in QT several times a week... is it considered stealing if I take a couple packs of the condiments and a plastic fork, if I don't buy anything like a salad or sandwich?

I learned 45 years ago with a shoe store named FAYVA to greet everybody for the same reason you stated . It lets them know that you are aware they're in the store . Probably most people don't like the " can I help you " question is because it distracts their concentration . HOME DEPOT and TARGET have been in the news recently because of their frustration with customers stealing . And nothing we fear the border crossings because they are crooks . Seems to me the crooks are here. I live in NEW HAMPSHIRE and there aren't many border crossings in this area.

You handled it alot better then i would have !! I was a lobster fisherman on the east coast of Canada and one time i had hired a life long friend to come fishing with me for the season about 2 weeks into the season i noticed the weights weren’t adding up to the amount of lobsters we were catching so i started watching him closely and figured out he was stashing them in the empty crates and stacking more crates on top of them!! So one day we were finished and on the way in I stopped and started reorganizing the crates and found a total of 42 lbs in 3 or 4 different crates i didn’t react or question him about it until we were tied up and when i faced him lets just say i didn’t give him a chance to explain himself and it was the one and only time in our 30+ yrs of friendship that tempers were lost i figured he stole close to $4000 worth of lobster,I didn’t know at the time he was supporting a pill addiction and the last i heard he was living on the streets in Toronto

The best policy would be to not leave your tools laying in the yard where they may grow legs. Where I grew up my dad and latter me never took money for our scrap or batteries etc. If we needed something a little steel for a project or just some cool junk, it was free. We new enough not to swipe the guys tools. That relationship lasted 50 years till the yard finally closed.

On a funny note. There was an old timer who would bring in scrap metal in his old pickup truck back in the day. He would always show up when he was raining. Well after he passed away his friends told us the old timer had a water tank strapped to the underside of his truck. He would fill it with water before he went to the scrapyard with the metal he had. Weigh up and go and dump the metals, well on the way back to the scale house he would open a remote valve that drained the water from the tank. Water weighs in at 8 lbs a gallon so having a 30 gallon tank that added up to an extra 240 lbs of so called metal weight. Smart old timer for sure but crooked still 😮

I haul alot of scrap, i had a employee trying to rip me off on mixed aluminum, telling me its all irony. I stop unloading, threw some back in my truck, got paid for what was already in the hopper and went 15 minutes up the road and they bought it as mixed, no questions asked. Well I didn't go back there for over a month. I haul in at least 30,000 pounds a week, different loads, sheet metal, all heavy cut for prepared, save none ferrous for complete loads. Well the owner called me and asked if everything was alright because he hadn't seen me (he missed my loads). After i explained he fired the employee while still on the phone with me. 0.35 cents a pound adds up when you have 1000 pounds of mixed aluminum.

Currently, what little scrap I generate I simply gift to my local scrap yard. Keeps it out of the landfill and I don't what to keep a pile of junk around to clutter up my LIttle building. Same scrapyard sells used "stuff" and steel trims. Good steel for small projects. Check in and weigh empty at office, drive around and load what you want, reweigh and pay. About 40% the price of new run steel.Unique things like tire rims, etc are even better deals.EVERYONE HATES THEIVES. You handled it better than I would.

You also were trying not to escalate the situation into something worse, which is also a great idea! And you still took whatever he offloaded and paid him for it without issue. By telling him at the end of it all that you no longer will accept his business was very smart as well, considering his previous behaviors like speeding through your yard where I'm sure you have employees walking around, was a smart business decision, even if it costs you some money because that little bit of money isn't worth the safety of everyone on-site! Sorry for the long-winded response! Stay safe.

Random metal things in the yard are presumed scrap...... to go weigh on the scale, go dump off some scrap, see some scrap in the yard you like, load it up and then go weigh on the scale again isn't exactly the crime of the century....... the yard looks at everything in pounds- they pay you based upon weight and you may look at things as things- especially things you can use, so if you "trade" scrap with the yard (you drop of some and you pick up some), the yard isn't out any weight (weight = $) as long as you leave more than you take. People scrap all kinds of good shlt all the time. It's really not a big deal- the guy had to think the jack was scrap. And the yard shouldn't leave things that are not scrap out in the yard anyway.... That guy seems like an a$$h0le but i think he was just trading scrap, not stealing from the yard...

When they picked up the car and what they thought was dirt coming out. They thought I was trying to cheat them. Pissed me off. I told them to go run a magnet on it, and I proved them wrong. We resolved the issue. I'm not a cheat, I didn't like doing business with them after that. But after that, I could see how many times people must have tried scams.
Unfortunately, life has shown me that there is a large percentage of people who are dishonest. PS, I never put my metal shavings into another car, wasn't worth it aggregation and money, I might have made a dollar more.

You did right, getting mad isn't healthy for blood pressure and stuff. I'd have told him the same, have a good day and don't come back. Now 20 years ago, fisticuffs if the cat wanted, lol.

Some people could be stressed out and not realize what there doing. Accidental muscle memory. Or another person loaded thinking it was his. Once had driveway done and we let worker use our shovel. When they left a neighbor 2 houses down comes and grabs the the shovel and say the workers forgot it and saying he will return it to them. Or probably some chance wanted to keep it. It took a few him minutes for him to realize shovel was actually ours.

LOL , YOU COULD HAVE SHORT WEIGHED HIM 2 OR 3 TIMES, BUT THAT TOO , WOULD BE STEALING!!
BETTER YET TELL THE OTHER SCRAP BUYERS IN YOUR AREA!
IF HE STEALS FROM YOU , HE WILL STEAL FROM THEM, AS WELL!!

I was at a scrapyard, and had just finished unloading and this guy from the yard comes up saying I stole the ladder that was in the bed of my truck. I became really irate and started yelling back at him that it was BS. a couple guys looked around and found their ladder. I was ready to go fist city. I don't steal stuff. As I was in line to get paid the guy came up and appoligised. After that it was cool. Just be sure before you accuse of someone of stealing. (red 6ft Warner ladder, there are hundreds like it)

You addressed the situation was willing to let it slide his attitude dictated that something was off so you do further inquires and in the end find out he's a problem and may have saved yourself or someone else from further damages or cause of harm so you did what was right stood by your workers and handled the customer with respect but firmness how it should be. Too many people believe they don't have consequences for their actions anymore and we in the real world know that to be false. Sounds like the gentleman may be troubled I e. Drugs or hardtimes financially effecting his decision making skills so sounds like you did a great job and turned out to be a win for the business he could have been stealing more than he was bringing in. Maybe check cameras of his last few visits if possible by his sale record. Best of luck live your videos.

If he's steeling from you more than likely the metal he's bringing in is stolen, you're better off not dealing with him.

So, they steal from you , then are we to believe they arent stealing from us. Like a guy I knew said" I dont steal from my friends" .Turns out what he really means is "I steal". I am not his friend either I found out.
