  • Listen to Koshka, an Amur tiger, roar repeatedly. Koshka’s roars get increasingly louder and so do all the birds nearby!
Tigers roar to communicate with other tigers and warn off predators. Their roars can be heard from up to 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) away and are nearly as loud as a jet engine, reaching 114 decibels. This is close to the threshold of pain and could potentially cause permanent hearing loss in humans.
Amur tigers are one of the largest members of the cat family. They are endangered and conservation efforts from zoos like the Fairbanks Zoo help preserve their species. They originated in the forests and grasslands of far eastern Russia and northeast China.
