  • When it comes to a "Human-like" field of view, which is better, a full-fat, great-big, juicy, full-frame sensor, or a workhorse Micro 43 camera like the Panasonic GH5 with a Sirui Anamorphic 50mm or even 24mm lens strapped to the front? Nobody else seemed to be asking this question on CZcams, so I thought I'd test it myself, and the results were not at all what I expected.
This video is long overdue and admittedly, nowhere close to Gerald Undone's level of scientific professionalism and sheer excellence as a technical reviewer, but it's my best, shovelled effort as a busy father and working, freelance filmmaker, to test the difference between the full frame capabilities of the Panasonic S5 and my trusty Panasonic GH5 to figure out the best setup for the widest possible shot that still maintains what I refer to as a "human-like" field of view, where the background isn't artificially distorted in the way that typically happens with both a wide angle lens or a zoom lens.
Huge thanks to Panasonic for running the professional loan program that allowed me to borrow and test the Panasonic S5.

It’s wonderful that you already have exactly what you want-need.
You just needed to realize this, so producing this video turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Oooh, that final shot with the 24mm looks really nice! You make me feel good about sticking with m43.

Thanks very much. In fairness, the 24mm Sirui on the GH5 really is a delicious combination.

Well the GH5II is literally the best bang for buck in the market today, in my opinion obviously. That Sirui 24mm is a very intriguing lens, I do plan on getting the set. But in the meantime, I sport the M.Zuiko Pro 17mm, and 45mm/1.2. On the fence about the 25mm/1.2, because there is the Leica 25mm/1.4. I do have the Lumix 25mm/1.8 which is sufficient for the most situations, and the Voigtlander 25mm/0.95 too.

How do you find the M.Zuiko 17mm? That’s a really impressive lineup of lenses btw. The Voigtlander sounds fun 😃. I have to be honest though, I always buy used GH5 bodies and find it far more practical to have multiple bodies than to spend the same money on one, single body. Workflow speed and efficiency when I’m on a client shoot is so paramount to me that, personally (and this is really just me being weird), I’d rather have one camera permanently rigged out in a cage, another permanently strapped to the gimbal with the ideal gimbal lens, and a third, run ‘n gun camera with a ready-charged wireless mic in a sling bag ready to grab and go at a moments notice. I suspect you’re right about the underrated GH5ii though, it’s definitely been overshadowed by everybody waiting for the GH6

@@HaydnRushworth-Filmmaker I thought a 35mm equivalent FOV necessary to have, and tend to buy lenses primarily new and discounted, preferably at least by twenty-five percent. Which I found the M.Zuiko Pro 17mm/1.2, anticipating a future need, but mainly to complete the trinity eventually.
However, I find the 45mm/1.2 more useful, having purchased it over the Nocticron, due to weather-sealing. Were the Leica so, I may have chosen it instead.
Now the GH5II, I do not regret, despite the GH6 imminent arrival only a couple of weeks away at the time. When the GH5II was level on price with the S5, I briefly contemplated between the two. Then the price dropped two hundred dollars, I could not pass it up, and with the GH5 only a hundred dollars less, for the difference, the GH5II offers so much more, even compared to the S5 being Full Frame.
I would purchase another GH5II without hesitation, save for the fact that the Leica 1.7 zoom’s are recently discounted three hundred dollars. I swear, It’s like an affliction, I could not pass on this opportunity either…

angle of comfortable field of view of a person is 28mm FF. How much compression should an anamorphic lens have?

Thanks so much, I think it really did show up just how incredible the 24mm Sirui looks on the GH5 :-)
