      In one of the Dark Heresy games I was in we went up against a *thing* that used to be an owner of a Halo Device. We barely escaped its lair (a secluded mountain retreat that looked more like a butcher shop than anything else) alive and called in an orbital bombardment to deal with it.
      It says *a lot* about how utterly terrifying that abomination was that even after the bombardment (that damn near levelled the mountains the retreat was in) was over we still wasn’t sure if it was actually dead or not since we never found a trace of it or the Halo device. Now logically I know that the thing died in the bombardment, but our GM never did confirm it one way or another and always looked a little too mischievous to my liking whenever we brought it up…

    Even more terrifying is that basically one in every 20 of these devices doesn't have any side effects, but the person who uses the Halo device can never actually truly know if they were one of the lucky ones, because the transformation takes place after an onset of AT LEAST one century.
    The chance that you could use it and be perfectly fine while still retaining all the benefits is actually what draws people to retrieve them and make use of them in the first place as well

      You are right and wrong at the same time. You are right, that in some very rare cases there are good effects without bad drawbacks, but it is not because the certain device itself, but because some people can match with that certain device perfectly( they had rare biology, which is in some king unique or perfect for matching the device without drawbacks), but this doesn't mean, that other people will have the same success. So it's more of that some people have the needed biology and DNA to match perfectly with some of these devices or somenof them. Because also one human can be a perfect match for some halo device, but not for other devices. Just the work with them is very tricky.

      While the corpse-grinders workers and burocrats may get... "overzealous" in their search for... "raw materials", corpse starches are usually made out of corpses lying around of those unfortunates who have no one to bury them. Besides, the corpses are grinded to their basics components, so you are not eating a body: you are eating a bar of proteins, carbohydrates and others such nutrients extracted from a body.

    Honestly kinda funny if we also go by how the imperium uses good ol corpsestarch to feed their population-
    Edit: well now I didn't expect to ever get 1k likes but I feel like it's being used in place of the dislike button so for the umpteenth time I know what corpsestarch is and how it's reprocessed what I was pointing out is that basically the nobles would have ways to hide their abominable acts via throwing whatever they don't eat into the processing plants that are responsible for making corpsestarch which lore wise happens more than people seem to realize. Even if we were to ignore that and go by those agri-worlds to exist they're not really reliable because nurgle aims for those worlds due to their overall country and primitive style lives at least in the sense that their only tech comes from those workplaces made to process what they get from harvesting. I mean hell I can give an example being the king of pigs in which nurgle *literally* was breaking the mind of a slaughter house worker while the plague father made his world more to the liking of his own and mind you slaughter houses can be found from hive cities to agriworlds more so the agri-worlds tho given they can maximize their harvests. Anyhow if people wish to point out everything they do they should realize chaos is a thing as has in numerous cases gone to fuck over the imperium if it meant more souls to the chaos gods themselves like this is one big game to them where the losers and winners are described as the most successful in this grim harvest. Even then this would be ignoring that the imperium suffers from more than *just* that of chaos like you've orks,eldar,druhkari,tau,tyranids,and those races in-between each vying to be the sole ruler of the galaxy and they aim for ANY world that is ripe to be taken like I won't say that is the case for the orks however as honestly with them its more or less seeking out a proper fight and finding worlds ripe with conflict.

    • @gruk5319
      @gruk5319 Před 10 měsíci +61

      @lukeBryen2 no no my friend you misunderstood why I pointed this out, basically means the nobles have a way to keep eating still living people while discarding what isn't eaten into corpsestarch because let's be real here when are corpses IN the 40k ever not come in pieces? Basically means the nobles have ways to hide their atrocities and none would be any wiser to it because hey don't question your superiors lest you be branded heretical and given the sway the nobles have even those that use the halo arrays you can see why I say this right? Basically no one would know and those who did couldn't exactly say anything without being gaslit as faithless dogs against the emperor again I say this because if we look at the overall state of the imperium even worse the inquisition unless you hold a place of power or friends in high places like within the inquisition you're nothing but soon to be corpsestarch if you ain't tread lightly or carelessly go about it.

      @mar71n32n0v1lLL0 Před 10 měsíci +6

      As others pointed out, corpsestarch is heavily processed to the point it has been broken down to it's constituent proteins and nutrients, therefore nothing about it is still recognizable as a former human.
      The Imperium makes a big difference between eating this distilled product from a public dispenser and eating straight from the source, dead or alive, since the latter is more often than not the product of Chaos or Xeno corruption, rather than desperate measures...

    The weird part is we have NO IDEA what these things actually are; they're xeno in origin, so it's been theorized that they have the effects they have because they're juuuust compatible enough with human biology to sort of kind of work, but even that's not for sure. The only things we know for certain are that whatever foul xenos built them once lived in the Halo Stars, and that there's no going back once you start using it.

    • @theprofessorkeen1911

      Brethren Moons perhaps? (Let’s face it, you could insert so many different sci-fi universes into 40K and it wouldn’t be completely implausible for them to have existed somewhere in the galaxy at some point. Maybe not exactly as they are, but some modifications and it’s certainly possible (pre-Age of Strife of course))

      That doesn’t make any sense though; bio transference devices were large machines that ripped the essence from a biological being (destroying the body in the process) and placed it into a body of necrodermis, the soul being devoured by the C’tan.
      If anything, it’s more likely to be something the Old Ones cooked up during the War in Heaven, or even used themselves before the Necrons even left their home planet, since biology is kind of their shtick (Eldar, Krorks, and possibly the Rangdan and Hrud, as well as anything and everything they could’ve thought up to battle the Necrons and their Gods (somebody even presented the possibility to me that the Tyranids might have even been Old One creations)).

One thing I like about them, is that one of the known Halo Devices is called the "Psycharus Worm", and is described as "Appearing like a tarnished brass maggot some six inches in length, the worm is cold and greasy to the touch". I love that, because to me that description makes it sound so insidious and like an eldritch artifact.

      Probably wouldn't work. The Halo Devices aren't seemingly intended to make people into monsters, it's just that human physiology is close enough to allow it to work, but not close enough to have it work perfectly for most people. There's a slim chance you won't become a giant cannibal rags monster, but this is quite rare, and clearly the device is doing something different between these two.
      Anyway, my point was that they probably wouldn't work on Astartes or especially Custodes, because their physiology is too different from baseline human.
