Dr. Yang's tai chi lineage can be traced back to the Yang family through Grandmaster Kao, Tao (高濤) and his teacher Yue, Huanzhi (樂奐之), an indoor disciple of Yang, Chengfu (楊澄甫).
Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) is an ancient internal Chinese martial art which has gained widespread popularity for its many health benefits. Today, most people practice taiji slowly to develop their balance, strength, and vitality, and the martial applications of the art are often ignored. Taijiquan, or 'Grand Ultimate Fist', is a highly effective form of combat specializing in short and middle-range fighting.
Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming offers practical martial applications for each of the 37-postures of traditional Taiji, based on the forms passed down by Yang, Ban-Hou. Once the viewer has a basic understanding of these universal principles, you may use them to devise further applications for every movement no matter which style of Taiji you practice.
Learn the Basic Concepts of Taiji and Taijiquan.
Understand the purpose of every Taiji movement.
Over 50 effective applications for any Taijiquan style.
The reason why people discredit tai chi is because not enough people study the combat applications of tai chi. You don’t fight like you’re doing a kata, but utilize the correct movement at the correct time for maximum effect.
Hmm, I think the reason why taiji is discredited has things to do with the fact that taiji practitioners always loose whenever they face a non cooperative opponent
@sepulveda blvd
Taiji is simply not effective against a non cooperative opponent
@@ernestvandouest6037 estás equivocado!
The health benefits of practicing Tai Chi which is why most people practice it have overshadowed it's martial effectiveness in the public's eye.Its such a great practice for people of all ages to improve health and most Tai Chi instructors don't know how to use Tai Chi for self defense.
@@ernestvandouest6037there hast to be drills that lead to working up to dealing with resistance. Past generations have cataloged these movements that were used on the battlefield.
This man has preserved the real art.
This man is very knowledgeable...... His presentations are outstanding.....Certainly one of the greatest modern teachers.
William Woods lmao this is fake dumbass
I can thoroughly attest to Dr. Yang’s excellent knowledge of and instruction in Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan, as well as his knowledge of Chin Na. Incredible depth of knowledge in martial arts.
Nice comment, thank you.
Oooooof if only all the naysayers knew what "Chin Na" means. 🤫🤠
Dr. Yang is a total badass, but a humble, kind person, and an incredible teacher.
AGREE!
He's obviously the real deal.
This is art, this is fullness, purity, the power of softness.
Best video so far. Every movement has an application. The way it should be.
Who ever edited this video is hilarious and definitely understands how to keep the viewer’s attention. I am hooked.
Hey thanks. I thought it was funny. I did NOT expect it to be our #1 preview trailer of all time with millions of views.
These martial applications are shown for every movement in the Yang-style Tai Chi form. The form is comprised of 37 moving patterns repeated for a total of 108 movements.
respect to Dr. Yang. 1994 i found one of his books (Chi Kung Health & Martial Arts). thanks to his clear explanation, i learned chi transport easily. after that, my general alertness and sensitivity improved and i stayed calm. until today, his explanation and demonstration is the clearest i have seen in english language.
Hey Yang Shiye, and Son Yang Shifu. _/\_ student of Liang SY's lineage here.
108 movements ...
108 the ever recurring number in eastern martial arts
@@shooter7734 It is barely-known, but the number 108 refers to the 108 defilements in Buddhism, because all these arts developed from Buddhist monasteries, or Daoist monasteries that had absorbed Buddhism during times it was outlawed in China.
@@shooter7734 like Wing Chun
Beautiful movement and application. Thank you for the video.
One wip😁 I understand that lol love Master yang. I been studying his art since I was 15, and I'm 28 now.
How many people have you defeated with your training?
I have so much love and appreciation for this man.
During 100 days of practice, the body begins to return to its natural state, after 1000 days of practice, the pearl of Wisdom begins to form. Don't stop.
I love everything about this.
Love this guy. The details are very strong.

Thank you Dr Yang Jwing-Ming.
THIS is the one I needed. I thank you so much. HERO.
37 years ago I took Tai Chi Chuan, now I am 58 I would love to take it up again. The system really works when I was jumped in South Boston it got me out of trouble without even thinking about it, everything came naturally to me.
What you train is what will come out in your reflexes in a real-life situation. If you want martial Tai Chi, check out Dr Yang's more recent DVD: www.amazon.com/Yang-Tai-Chi-Beginners-Jwing-Ming/dp/B006WPDKLI/
@@Ymaa_Publication_Center This guy defende himself using TaiChiChuan skill he aint no begginner :)
Who did you learn from because I do not believe that simply training the form will allow one to respond properly in combat without a true transmission (the spiritual side). However, because someone has trained the form, the practical application will "magically" appear through the true transmission. I know because this happened to me where someone tried to grab my arm and I instantly knew to pin it to my belly and he immediately was mine -- the thing was I was never taught the practical application for that common position! It was the true transmission that allowed me to "know" what to do because I had practiced the form; its like a gift, a very helpful and valuable gift. :D
@@misterreyth8805 ...okay....by "someone" do you mean an actual assailant attempting to do you harm or a sparring partner in a controlled environment (which is why he was 'immediately yours')??
@Kamatari Honjo This video shows one or 2 applications per form, which is incredibly limiting as the postures/forms of Taiji are "seed forms" and there are many applications. Most decent instructors tend to shy away from applications as most people aren't real "fighters" and aren't learning it as a martial art. No good instructor will lead you to believe that this is the kick ass all winning martial art. It isn't. You have to train functionally to fight - sparring, drills etc and the highest percentage moves are the proven strikes, wrestling, BJJ. What Taiji does teach you is: Body Mechanics/Posture/Kinetic Chain, Balance, Relaxation/Overcoming Fight or Flight, Mind/Body Connection. I challenge you to find a fighter who doesn't value these attributes! What you will actually find in the forms are many common wrestling moves - a simple arm drag in "Grasp Sparrows Tail" for example, plenty of Sprawl type techniques in Chen Style. There are only so many effective techniques to strike or take down an opponent and you will find them all in the Taiji form. In reality the forms themselves aren't as important as the principles behind them, the body mechanics of the kinetic chain and how to develop power through relaxation and torque through the waist (boxing). This is stuff that modern sport science has only really developed in the last 50 years or so, but these TMA were doing it hundreds of years earlier. Yes things have moved on, there is no focus on ground techniques but if you have the time to study this art you will develop some great skills. You will be harder to take down and you will have heavy hands. Now referring to the guy that said he got jumped even without using a form or application of any sort, the first thing you need to do not to tense up otherwise you can't react quickly. After that whatever happens is down to luck if you don't know how do deal with it, but step one is staying relaxed, keeping a good posture and not falling over.
His balance is perfect. I’m a jiu-jitsuka myself but would love to do this because of it’s graciousness
Are you a copy of me ? 😄 I'm a former Jiu jitsuka as well, and love the gentle flowing movements of Tai chi.
Great video from a great master he has a deep understanding of the internal martial arts principles . Thanks for sharing your kung fu
非常感谢您的分享。上帝非常保佑你们。❤😊
3:20 i love how he just makes the opponent fall to the ground and it looks so casual
True mastery. Thank you Dr.Yang.
This man is a true legend. Tai Chi Chuan combined with some chin na applications can help anyone of any age defend themselves. Its not about fighting, its protect yourself and flee.
Yeah those Chin na techniques are great very effective.
I take Tai Chi classes to help me with strength and balance because I have reactive arthritis in all of my joints. My teacher has been teaching us the martial arts reasons behind each movement of the form because so many of us in the class are so vulnerable and could not run away from an attack if we tried. I love the meditative aspect but I think learning to use the movements to protect oneself is vital if you have a mobility handicap. Next I think he will teach us how to read the vulnerability of an attacker. That is probably months down the road. But I really do appreciate Tai Chi and what it has to offer.
PearlMagnolia
There are no belts in Tai Chi. My teacher has been practicing it and Kung Fu for 65 years. He is a Master, but he refuses to accept that label. I've yet to see any belts. In fact, a Tai Chi Gee doesn't have any place for a belt.
The beauty of tai chi is that anyone can do it, it dosen't slowly destroy the body but rather builds it up and preserves what you have. I wish it were more popular where i am.
Give it time it willl heal you
@wade i disagree, with external arts careful technique can extend the time you can practice, but theres only so much beating the body can take before your age starts to catch up with you.
That toe you broke during sparing, that shoulder you wrenched during a throw you probably shouldn't have tried on that big dude, that elbow that got hyperextended when you took a little too long to tap out. It all adds up over time, And starts to catch up with you around your mid-forties.
Thats not saying that one must stop, (i know a retired boxer who practices with the speed bag in his 60s) but if you take a guy who's been training in Taekwondo his entire life and compare him to a life long Tai Chi practitioner at age 60 there is a profound difference.
Dear Grand Master, Thank you for showing the seemingly hidden aspects of Tai-chi. Well. Keep on showing and enjoying a highly beneficial activity , Best regards. Paul, 66, retired isnstructor of Karate.
Excellent exercice de patience pour une bonne maîtrise de son corps. Une connaissance de l'energie vitale.
This is what I love about Chinese traditions.
It is a pleasure to see such a high level in taiji quan. It is so uncommon in that field.
Funny to see this in my recommendations more than 20 years after I used to be affiliated to the school in Paris and had many books from the Doctor Yang Jwing Ming.
Great instruction and approach to the martial applications of traditional forms. Love to see an artist use his entire body to cause a reaction or take the partner down
I thought your stuff was more cutting edge?
Great video. I always wanted to learn Taichi for health and protection.
Excellent style. Nice movement..I like to learn tai chi.
Spent 3 yrs studying Tai Chi but had to stop after college and work. It is very effective and the instructor could very effortlessly best any movement even tho he was 10 inches and 70 lbs lighter than me. Amazing.
Thanku Tai chhi more again tacninic please
Beautiful !
Tai Chi is so amazing! My dream is to learn from Chinese master directly.
Make sure they can actually transmit the true tradition. The strongest masters can teach you in your dreams! :D
Always be a good guy. Don't desire to hurt anyone and be willing to practice hard. :D
I’ve paid attention to him since I was a young teenager. I’m now 60 years old.
Some movements are similar to aikido. I also love the peace that comes from this style. Just a beautifull art !
+terrmosgmail Aikido is 100 years old. Hapkido 50 years old. Taijiquan is very ancient. Same principles.
YMAA just for the record;) : aikido techniques are very ancient too, because its roots are in aikijujitsu.
@@MARIUSVL and the roots of aikijiujitsu is in tai chi, so what now?
taichi and aikido are all soft style form of martial arts. .sculpt away the non essentials. .retain the essential ones. .and one would have a combat art enough to defend oneself. .
@Hound19745knowing the deepness of an art depends on a practitioner's preference, understanding and years of diligence and practice. .are you or have been an aikidoist and a taichi practioner at the same time to compare that the latter has more deep than the former. .? if you only practice taichi and exclude aikido then your knowledge on aikido is what you have only seen on steven seagal's video. .
Exelente instructor 👍👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋💪

He knows alot about chi and the body.
actually, I have it on VHS tape somewhere in a box in a loft (no longer have the vhs player)
this is the best investment for any youngster. train the young
What is a "VHS"?! Just kidding, thank you!
If you want to teach them a form of cardio and stretching than sure. But fighting? Throw any tai chi master at me and I'll beat him. Hands, kicks, grappling, any one or all three.
Anyone that tries to tell you Tai Chi is a fighting art is selling you a plate of shit.

I recently bought his Tai Chi martial applications. I started do understand what I have learned years ago. Here in Brazil we do not have detailed books written by our masters. Thank you so much Dr. Yang! I will buy more books.
You can see the power even through his very gracefully applied movement and application similar to how we see Tai Chi Chuan applications taught at Shaolin Kung Fu
Thank you Master
Wonderful...
Dr Yang is an American treasure ,his depth of knowledge is astonishing
AGREE!
clear and revealing. thanks
TAI CHI KUNG FU really nicl.Thank you.
good demo. thanks
Excelent!
Now I'm thinking about taking up Tai chi it's a good martial art I don't have to take as much so I'm looking forward to it
Very nice video
Looks amazing!
Impressive.
I have Dr Yang's material (all his DVDs and books on Taiji actually) and they are truly excellent, clearly explained and allow you to train by yourself if that is all you can manage. My only suggestion is that I wish Dr Yang would deal with Taiji applications that deal with the most common street attacks (such as a sucker punch, round house or swing punch, big wild haymakers....etc). The Taiji martial applications DVD all assume a push hands situation, that if you really think about it can be adapted, but that would just really help people visualize and have some techniques for punches etc. However I do admit that Dr Yang does deal with this moreso in the book that goes with the DVD but still, this would be really awesome. However I totally recommend Dr Yang's Taichi materials!!
Alot of street attacks are usually a guy trying to punch someone in the face.
@@brittscott4673true. Tai chichuan and teaches you how to block, redirect the energy and also strike. As well it teaches you to knock the person to the ground and add joint locks. There are infinite possibile responses.

I've been on the receiving end of cloudy hands. It's unbelievable just how powerful it is. A video cannot do it justice.
I love cloudy hands but I was never taught the elbow down version, only the elbow up which requires an additional step of twisting; I would really like to learn the elbow down way, its much quicker and easier. :D

How can i acquire your dvd? How much i pay for it? Reply please. Thank u so much?
I seek the older understanding but by learning to make Yin strong.
6 element i made system pointing energy more clear then any seen by by self.
Why it works simple i know what they needed to be able to do.
The way you know you learned Tai Ji right, you never fell you do muths, and there are no focus on Fight it self, but energy it self as one. (In case well come to the first step)
Yang can easy be over do.
