      Exactly. I used to watch him all the time when he had the CBS Evening News and I never noticed him be partisan once. He was great.
      He’s also really buff, which cracked me up because I had no idea even after watching him for years. He did a profile on Hugh Jackman for 60 Minutes back in 2013/2014 and they worked out together and he made Hugh Jackman look small.

      Carl Bailey: It always pisses me off whenever a conservative complains about an alleged Liberal bias in college campuses, just because the majority of people at those campuses are smart enough to reject the conservative position (whatever it may be that week) on their own. To put your own point in a different way: When you choose to reject objective reality in favor of a fantastical fever-dream of a lie, objective reality automatically becomes biased against you and your self-imposed delusions.

There are some exceptions (MSNBC makes a very clear disclaimer anytime they can't independently verify), but for the most part I only trust a select few print publications to have done due diligence. Please do think critically and take in alternative news sources-- not just Fox, MSNBC, ABC or CBS. You will learn more about people who are not like you and you become more aware. I'm not a Trump fan, but he was right about fake news. His election was arguably the biggest shock of my life, but I have been on an over two year journey and had I known what I know now, I would've called it months before. I'm not buying this guy's book. I already know what his angle is. I've consumed that news most of my life and it is just a sliver of truth. It prevents me from respecting news sources like that, and so I choose to not take in their news anymore.

      *@Liz G "Critical thinking is not prevalent anymore."* It is no small coincidence that the Republican Party platform (at least on the state level) included "Stop teaching critical thinking skills at the high school level" for many years. I was shocked to read that in their platform, although I guess it makes sense. After all, critical thinking helps people see through the political BS, corporate manipulation, and obfuscation that the Republican Party is all about. With critical thinking skills, people would eventually figure out the party and its "leadership" offer voters absolutely NOTHING beyond division, hatred, ginned up fear, and tribalism. To be fair, the corporate establishment wing of the Democratic Party offers a lot of the same short-sighted and clueless "leadership" within their ranks. I mean Hillary spent half of her time apologizing, or making up excuses and blaming someone else for her horrible political decisions, largely coming from her complete lack of critical thinking skills. She could never see two steps beyond what she promoted to understand the concept of UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES. The party's insistence on running the same losing election strategy time and time again (to the point of outright cheating and rigging their primary process to make it happen) demonstrates no critical thinking ability. Joe Biden is the most current demonstration of the party "leadership" banking on their voters having no critical thinking skills, and failing to see "the big picture." Trump won over Hillary because his phony campaign rhetoric REJECTED the centrist, keep the status quo, corporate-friendly agenda, but the Democratic establishment still insists on changing nothing of substance as the only way to win, even after being defeated at all levels of government with that stupid strategy. Fortunately, there are still quite a few people around who do possess critical thinking ability, and they can see through all the neoliberal BS. Hopefully they'll prevent another abysmal party failure by quickly rejecting Wall Street's wet dream going by the name of Joe Biden. ...Or Kamala Harris, or Pete Buttigieg, or Cory Booker, or Amy Klobuchar, et al.

      How to Think More Critically:
      Ask basic questions and know that two things can be true at the same time. The world is complicated. ...
      Question the author's assumptions... and identify your own.
      Be aware of your beliefs. Why do you want to believe this is true?.
      Try reversing the argument.
      Evaluate the evidence.
      Think for yourself (instead of agreeing so someone else will accept you).
      Understand That No One Thinks Critically 100% of the Time.
      How to evaluate information sources - ask yourself and quickly search to find out:
      - Who is the author?
      - Is the author objective or do they have an agenda (selling something, getting something from you for their benefit)?
      - Is the info specific, sufficiently detailed, and verifiable?
      - Is the info-and its conclusions-the most current or is it repeating older, common norms? (e.g. is it an urban myth or faulty research that was already debunked by peer-review in the scientific community?)
      - Is the info fully covered in the article or video, addressing all or most questions that a thoughtful reader should have? Have other sources covered it in the same way? Are the same authorities being cited and are these sources adequate and accurate?

      I think I speak for a lot of people on this; It's as much about choosing to not read what we *don't respect* or *don't trust* as it is about just wanting to read what we will agree with.

      Indeed, but especially in the US. That's crystal clear when you compare the two last presidential elections in France and the US: Putin and his trolls tried all they could to weigh on the French presidential election, but they had absolutely no impact, since people in France (as Europe in general - except the UK, see below) are better educated, more critically thinking and - esp. - examine *primary sources* .
      Same thing happened in Germany and The Netherlands, where Putin & co tried, in vain, to weigh on the last legislative elections.
      Now, it _is_ true that Putin & co had some impact in the UK around the Brexit referendum.
      Why are Anglo-saxon people more manipulable? Is it due to lack of education and/or laziness? What else could it be?

    Pelley did a wonderful job of explaining what my government and civics teachers taught me in public schools- read two (differently slanted papers most days after 11 th B'day) views on most really hot political issues; watched from "newspapers" as Gov. Ronald Reagan developed the "line item veto" to stop only the parts of legislation and it would require 2/3 of both houses to pass over his veto- by the way this info on RR was out there when he was governor, there was no internet, and we still elected St.Ronnie to POTUShood!

    • @bearbrand6626
      @bearbrand6626 Před 5 lety +4

      Right? He's saying we, the audience, should check multiple news outlets to see if the story checks out on more than one. Problem with that is that most of them piggyback each other's sources. One station has a source, the next station says, "CBS has a source...".
      There is so little due diligence in reporting now, and the internet makes it worse (flooded with articles and soundbites containing uncorroborated info).

    • @dsugioaga
      @dsugioaga Před 5 lety +2

      You should ALWAYS be skeptical of any news source, even if you trust it.
      But you should also be wary of conspiracy theorists. Any clown can take to Facebook or Twitter and spread BS. The traditional news outlets may have corporate interests but those are not always monolithic and at least they have some vetting processes. It helps to get your news from many different sources, including some reputable foreign/international outlets and then use critical thinking to put all these different pieces together, to form a bigger picture.
      It can be a hassle but if somebody is too lazy to do so, that person is part of the problem.

      @MetteC5 Před 5 lety

      Om Eyehead
      After several years of pause in informing myself in depth of American politics (I currently live in Europe), I had to determine which American news outlets I could now trust. I then systematically examined primary sources and compared them to the related accounts in different news outlets. That exercise allowed me to clearly assess which news outlets are steadily reliable, which are irregularly reliable and which are outright false.
      Such exercise throughout the US would cut short of any misinformation.
      In order to carry out the exercise, you need to learn to consult primary sources - which means that you need to learn:
      - What a primary source is. I've encountered numerous Americans who think that media is a primary source, incl. when reporting on a primary source...
      - Where to obtain and how to correctly identify primary sources. To those seeking to obtain a specific primary source, ask me and I'll do what I can to help you.
      - How to understand primary sources. American education needs drastic improvement so that Americans are able to decipher primary sources.

This is what Scott Pelley is alluding to. Truth over Biasness or believing only what suits our beliefs without an open mind.

    It's all well and good to say that we need to examine the information that comes our way _skeptically,_ but there's _so much of it,_ and examining it skeptically _takes time;_ a commodity that, unavoidably, exists in limited supply. So how do we tell, right off the bat, which information to examine, and which to discard?
