Sunset Boulevard | Nicole Scherzinger, Jamie Lloyd and more on West End opening night

- Last night WhatsOnStage was invited to the afterparty of visionary director Jamie Lloyd's latest West End production - a radical reimagining of the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic Sunset Boulevard.
In addition to receiving a glorious review from our lead critic Sarah Crompton, the show also enjoyed three standing ovations on opening night, relished by a phenomenal cast led by Olivier Award nominee Nicole Scherzinger (as Norma Desmond), Tom Francis (as Joe Gillis), Grace Hodgett Young (as Betty Schaefer) and David Thaxton (as Max von Mayerling).
After the performance, we caught up with the talented quartet, alongside Lloyd and video designers/cinematographers Nathan Amzi and Joe Ransom to chat about this bold and imaginative take on a timeless musical. Check out our video!
Sunset Boulevard follows Norma Desmond, a former movie star longing for a return to the silver screen, and a young scriptwriter who falls under her spell. Lloyd Webber’s score is accompanied by book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton, and features such iconic songs as “With One Look,” “The Perfect Year,” and “As If We Never Said Goodbye”.
The West End cast also includes WhatsOnStage Award nominee Rachel Tucker (who guest stars as Norma Desmond on Mondays), Carl Au (as Myron/Jones), Georgia Bradshaw (as Lisa), Hannah Yun Chamberlain (as Patsy), Tyler Davis (as Sheldrake), Kamilla Fernandes (as Dorothy), Ahmed Hamad (as Artie), Laura Harrison (as Catherine), Charlotte Jaconelli (as Joanna/Guard), Olivia-Faith Kamau (as Nancy), Luke Latchman (as John), Emma Lloyd (as Mary/Heather), Mireia Mambo (as Jean/dance captain), Gregor Milne (as Sammy), Kody Mortimer (as Finance Man/Frank), Jon Tsouras (as Finance Man/Stan/Cecil B De Mille) and Charlie Waddell (as Morino/Hog-Eye).
Rounding out the company are Lara Denning (as Standby Norma), Jordan Cork and Shayna McPherson (as Camera Operators/Ensemble), with Catherine Cornwall, Michael Lin (assistant dance captain), Jon Reynolds, Kirsty Anne Shaw, Harrison Wilde and Lillie-Pearl Wildman as swings.

The Jamie Lloyd Company production of Sunset Boulevard is co-produced with Ambassador Theatre Group Productions, Michael Harrison for Lloyd Webber Harrison Musicals, Gavin Kalin Productions, and Wessex Grove. It is produced by arrangement with the Really Useful Group Ltd and based on the original Paramount film by Billy Wilder.

Omg - Nicole is phenomenal in this. Her final scene is amazing - the blood, the crazed look. She should have done more of this over the past 25 yrs.

Nicole's charisma is bursting though the screen, I can't wait to see it live in the theatre.
I saw this musical Sunset Boulevard and it was amazing.
Nicole Scherzinger was brilliant as Norma Desmond. Her vocals were stunning.
However, Tom Francis is the one that stood out the most for me in the show. He was just incredible and his vocals were just out of this world sensational. He was the rising star in this show and he shined really bright like a star that he is.
Tom Francis is the one to look out for because he has a lot of talent in him and has a lot of star potential in him.
I think he is just phenomenal. I just can’t stop talking about Tom because he is that amazing.
Tom has vocals that are made out of pure gold and he is just a sweetheart and has a heart full of gold and love and joy.
Tom Francis is very special to me and he is a true superstar in the making.
I believe in him and I know he will make it far in the world of Theatre. I hope he will get more main lead roles in shows like this and he deserves to have all the support, love, respect and recognition because he is just a loveable person who I admire. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Really cool video, thank you. I saw SB a few weeks ago and I’m still feeling amazed by it. I was puzzled as to why there were no reviews of the show at the time - so now I guess I understand - they just had press night so I guess I saw a preview?
I’m not sure if Tom Francis realises just how staggeringly talented he is, and so utterly perfect for this show.

I started watching the movie on actress desman couldn’t stop till I saw it all
The audience is absolutely prohibited from recording during the entire show , hence no clips or recordings of the songs and scenario. At the end of the show and curtain call then the audience can snap their cameras and recordings. Sorry but you got to see the show to appreciate and heave praises on the cast and crew. I saw the show twice so yes Nicole showed the tremendous Gif given talents that she has and her unique artistry . Her supporting cast and leading man Tom Francis also were also tops . I have seen previous interpretations of SB but this show is mind blowing and insanely artistic and risqué in approach . Am glad that Nicole has found her triumphant niche in the entertainment industry . ❤

Even if done well for me this would just not work away from the golden age of Hollywood setting in the immediate decades after silent cinema. I’m sure it’s good for what it is. It is good to see Nicole is taking he role very seriously and is living the part.
