Quintessence began as a short one-movement work, which was commissioned by Dr. Stephen Steele, director of bands at Illinois State University (ISU), and premiered on February 1, 1997, by the ISU Brass Quintet and David Collier, professor of percussion. In 2005, Dr. James Keene, director of bands at the University of Illinois, commissioned another movement to precede the original movement, making the work larger and more marketable by featuring a brass quintet and solo percussionist. The new movement, Fanfare, Choral and Riffs, features a solo marimba and brass quintet; the second, original movement features a brass quintet and solo multi-percussion. The first movement is cast in a quasi-rondo design, whereby a chorale tune is alternated with episodic-like sections that feature "riffs" or fanfare-like passages. The second movement, now titled Scherzo, opens with the brass quintet playing a bright but angular theme. Like the first movement, this movement features episodes alternating with both the bright, angular theme, and a chorale. - Hudba
