  • B&D kicked off this 2001 CMA Awards show soon after the 9/11 tragedy. As a guitarist in their band, I was honored and nervous to have cameras focused on my hands as I played the last part of the Star Spangled Banner before starting their song "Only In America." I never in my wildest dreams wished to "cold open" the CMAs. But I did. Sadly, at one of the worst times imaginable. But, music heals. Alan Jackson floored the CMA audience and the nation with his post 9/11 song "Where Were You?" Still healing.

Still, after 17 years, one of the best produced videos of all time! Made me a country music fan.

I can't believe I just now found this video, but thank you so much for sharing. While Alan rightfully stole the show, this is still a moment that deserves to be preserved.

Ronnie Dunn's powerful vocals and Kix Brooks getting down on that guitar! One of the most memorable performances ever for me during that time.

@@shapro88 watch their mouths, and their hands on the guitars. They are behind. They have been under scrutiny for years for not playing "live" at awards shows and out on tour.

I was at the Brooks & Dunn performance in Allegan, Michigan on 9/13/01 where after 2 days of being in shock , you opened up the show with the Star Bangled Banner as Ronnie Dunn read about a statement of the freedom all of us enjoy. Great show, we still have the confetti that was shot out. Hands down the best concert I have ever seen!

WoW, Charlie Crowe! I am a guitarist (long retired) of nearly 57 years (this is 6Oct2018), and that was exactly what I was thinking ... "I wonder if that guy is nervous, jumping right into part of 'The Banner'"? But you nailed it nicely!! I love this song by B&D and IIRC, it was the first out either just before, or right after 9/11, and I marveled at their timing. Great job on all the music on this song, on this show. And good for you for being there. And YES, Alan Jackson's "Where Were You?" was incredible and still brings tears, to this day ... Worse coming, I am afraid, though, as God's clock and calendar begin to wind down ...

Hey, I'm a guitarist, too (only thirteen, but I play)! They did do this song nicely, and I had no idea it first outted right after 9/11, thanks for the info. Now it brings more meaning to the song for me. God bless you, and his clock is winding down.
