Charge a battery pack, and use that to charge your phone at the same time. Like an in-between.
Just don't use a data bearing cable for charging in those places. Use a power plug in between or get a cable with just the two power pins running through the cable (not your default cable!).
This should be a pinned comment, not many people know these two types of cables exist
I just read the Wikipedia article on juice jacking. It seems to confirm my suspicions that just plugging a phone in does not make it vulnerable, at least not with Android. iPhones apparently allowed automatic mounting of a phone as a hard drive when plugged in, though that has been fixed. Also, since Android 4.2.2, attackers can no longer access the "Android Debug Bridge" without authorization. This is something that would be used by software developers. As I mentioned, with Android devices, data access has to be specifically authorized and has been for as long as I've had an Android phone (12 years). It would be nice to hear from someone who know cell phone internals about this.
I worked in embedded programming and hardware design for cellphones for 14 years. Modern cellphones negotiate charge rates. They do this through a charge controller that has an embedded processor. If your cellphone accepts charge rates above 900 milliamps, the charger microcontroller and your battery microcontroller negotiate a charge rate, no matter how convinced you are that it doesn't. Certainly it isn't supposed to allow your battery microcontroller to load code into your ARM processor, but they certainly communicate and the threat vector exists. If your phone has "battery bars" then you can be certain that it has a microcontroller that communicates with the charger and the phone.
@@john_in_phoenix I never said the phone doesn't negotiate with the charger, though I wonder if those data blockers interfere with that. However, read that Wikipedia article. You'll find things like "theoretical" and "To date there have been no credible reported cases of juice jacking outside of research efforts". You might also follow the 1st reference to "Cybersecurity Myths You Might Still Believe - Debunked!" which states there are no confirmed reports of it.
@@James_Knott Guess what? It's happened. Just because it is not in the news doesn't mean it didn't. We need more info how this "Juice Jacking" - was there a new hardware secretly installed, and how.
I call BS on some of these reports, Not that it couldn't happen but it sounds like its only happening on a select kind of charging station. If for some reason they are using a Computer behind the wall that is just plain Stupid.
@@waynesardullo2482 it's fake news
They can also run BAD USB attacks through charging cables and modified ports at charging stations like that.
how about a story on out of control inflation
There are four wires in a USB cable (of the kind you would use to plug into these stations). Two are to deliver power, and two are for data. If you have a cable without the two wires for data, you're safe. If you don't have one of those, search for Data Blockers. They are a small USB plug that you put between the port and your cable. They connect the power wires, but not the data wires, and do whatever magic is necessary for your phone to see the power and accept it (USB-C requires resistors, I think).
forgot one, using a custom cable without usb features should protect from that. "usb charging only cables - they only have 2 wires used." only would consider damaging overvoltage as some kind of DoS attack.
Those are called data blockers and allow only power to pass.
Thanks for sharing!! I'll do exactly THAT.
You can also buy a USB C power cable that doesn't have data transfer functionality and only charging capability.
The more we put stuff online, the more we have to “protect our data” - and it’s like a neverending loop where security has to be continuously updated over and over and over again. I choose to simply not use a lot of that stuff so there isnt much to deal with.

I think a free charging station in a hotel would be more dangerous than one in public because hackers have time to modify it in private.
Lol, you wouldn't be able to tell who was just using the free charging, and who's modifying it
and that's why you'd be the first to lose your data. you think you know something, when you don't. it doesn't take any time to modify anything, they show up with pre-built devices that they can either fit in under the cover of the usb port or just put a whole new face plate over the top of it, and it takes seconds. to anyone else, it just looks like you're fiddling trying to plug in a cable. they've been doing that in public with magnetic card readers for decades.
Don't give them any ideas
To the naked eye it would just look like the perpetrator it using the charging station like every one else you can't tell if he's uploading viruses or not
Talking about thinking you know sumthing but don't....the hacker that developed these protocols literally says its absurd to think anyone would ever put in the vast amount of work necessary to get this shot to work, for example you'd get to develop a program that can distinguish between iPhone and Android and then have an OS on your "system" that had two completely huge sets of data because each is so different....its just not a thing ppl need to worry about, in today's age anyways
They sell usb condoms on Amazon - it's an adapter that blocks data but allows charging.
most modern smartphones, you are always given a notice in case someone tries to access your information. if you charge your phone, make sure you check out if your phone has any anomaly before leaving it, better to bring your own socket plug.

Usually a smartphone will ask if you want a USB device to access the phone when connecting to a computer. Juice Jacking basically is a small computer hidden inside a charge plug a hacker put into a public area that is automatically designed to launch code when a smartphone is attached to it. They are banking on people being oblivious to that USB device permission warning and click ok. If you plug in a USB port to public charge your device, and your smartphone asks if you want USB device to connect, this is how you know it’s a Juice Jacker. Select no and unplug phone.
The best thing to do when traveling is to bring your own USB power brick and plug directly into an outlet when you are at your hotel, for on the go, a Power Bank is the most convenient and safe option. When you sitting down for coffee, you your own power bank to charge your device. Some android phones can share power with other phones but remember that this feature removes more energy from your phone than charges the other phone.
How
Oh no..
How does one load malware onto a power port that has no computer at the other end? This "news" report failed to investigate and explain fully.
Just use caution when using any public utilities basically, a similar sort of deal is going on in ATM and checkout machines.
Once upon a time there were (and I think may still be) charge only - non-data - cables. No-data wiring is also achievable by snipping the data wires in a standard cable if you are even minimally experienced. If you don't want to buy anything use one of the plethora of cables laying around, slice an inch of the outer casing, pop out the 2 data wires and snip off 1/2 inch of each, put a bandaid on it and there you go. CZcams will tell you the wire colors.
the cheapest charging cables bought in stores and gas stations are usually charge only. at least around where i live.
@@purr_lude Well, I bought one that doesn't transfer data and doesn't charge either. I'm selling it for $10. Message me here.

It's very easy these days to hide a hacker's identity. Only time hackers have been caught is when they eventually get sloppy and slip up.
There are no suspects, it's fake news
Back up batteries are pretty cheap. The library for instance just has ac outlet plug in places. Seeing those usb ports is a BIG RED FLAG, because all you need is a regular ac outlet and your own usb charger. You can usually buy a cheap usb charger pretty easily although I don't recommend using one of those regularly on Apple devices. Apple devices, especially laptops, are more picky about their electrical ratings. And a frayed cord can affect the electrical output, too.
Just select the "charge only" option on your phone lol or use the adapter, however some places are crowded
Or, if all these ppl have phones, they got chargers as well. Use them people. Will never understand why people trust the public so much.
Most new cell phones stopped including a charger; they only include the cable. Not excusing the personal irresponsibility of most people, just explaining why this is happening more.
A lot of different countries have different wall outlets than in North America so I assume that's also a factor too
These people obviously don't know how this works. You can't just install malware from a USB convention to your phone. Phones have strict access for what the USB port can do, and it would warn you if you want to enable file sharing over USB.
malware doesn't obey rules
@@justayoutuber1906 Prove that.
And the USB ports on the charger station wouldn't even be wired for Data transfer, so you'd have to solder the drive with the malware in.
I'm sure that phone will ask if you want to transfer stuff or just charge only
On an android phone you can set it so your phones charging port is only used for charging
The best way to protect yourself is by using a non data cable designed to charge but doesn’t pass on data.
Great point
Who sells them?
a genuine question : we can charge our powerbanks then later on charge our phones ryt i mean that's safe right or is there a catch to it as well??
I didn't even think of that! I have no tech knowledge, but I would imagine it should be safe since there is no point at which data needs to be stored on a portable power bank, so it wouldn't have "receptors" (or whatever the technical term is) for data? So then it wouldn't be possible for the portable charger to download the virus, period. Just a guess, though. Hopefully someone who has a better understanding of these things chimes in!
I guess if you're worried about it, you could still charge from the power bank, but with a charge-only cable that some people have mentioned in comments?
You can only charge at FBI approved charging stations
No they uploaded the malware through the internet into your wall socket. Then you transferred it onto your power bank from there. Then it just goes straight into your phone. I don't think there is anyway to prevent this. We are all screwed.

You can use a 'data blocker'. It's a small USB device that goes between the charging cable and your device.
if your phone battery runs low in the middle of the day, you're using your phone too much.
Factory reset is only effective on iOS using a computer because it erases the phone 7 times and reinstall the os entirely. Android on the other hand doesn’t do that and it could still hide somewhere even after a factory reset
True. Factory resets don't always solve all problems.
Where did you get this information? 7-pass isn’t used for iOS in any form. HDD-style overwrites don’t benefit a phone, and flash storage can only stand to lose endurance via rw cycles. iTunes wipe is the equivalent of a reflash via Android recovery. Both functions wipe partitions and rebuild the OS.
Technically the only one you COULD do a 7-pass on is an Android, but you wouldn’t want to.
Make sure you bring your charging brick or using the portable charger to simply charge up your phone. Hackers who are attempting to perform juice jackin, can land them life imprisonment.

Help or destroy. It's like surgery... sometimes it saves your life sometimes it does the opposite.
What about using a charge only cable that connects +V and ground through the USB cable and does not include the data wire? This seems like the best solution and is not even stated in the information provided. No data can be transferred via the power only connection.
Because modern phones communicate with the charger to negotiate charging speeds. Bring your own charger.
Whoa That’s📱Scary ⚡️
Cut the data cables of your charging cable, or get a usb cable without data cables (for charging only).
Not possible... You need to allow access...
Those charging stations are incredibly slow to begin with and now this lol
If you have you plug in charger use it since they have not set up the means to access your data through electricity. Otherwise use a power bank battery. The charging station will only access that battery that does not have data and provide a barrier to your device.
In addition to a laptop and powerbank, with my android phone I can drain the battery of another phone using a usb C - usb C cable. Handy in a pinch. Not sure what it does to the batteries in the long run
use free charging stations to charge your Power bank, not directly to your phone or another personal device that contains your information
I can just press “Don’t Trust” on the prompt it asks me on iPhone
Yes. Use protection.
Decade back we used to have charging and usb separate in NOKIA’a BlackBerry’s 😁😅 but iPhone changed everything
That's why I always bring with me a power bank so I don't need to worry where I need to charge my phone. I think if you use your adapter instead of the data usb then probably they can't still any information.
We have them on buses in the uk.
would it still happen if your phone is set to charge only? I think android has that option on the notification pull down
You can avoid this by not using the usb ones you bring your own electrical adapter and use a standard plug then you plug your usb cable into your adapter you can also get power banks i have one that recharges with solar panels I would never plug anything with personal data directly into an unprotected source usbs are Data transfer hubs and a third thing you can do is use an induction charger with the usb chargers so you never plug your phone directly in and the phone charges ontop of a lil charger pad .
So if I use a powerbank to charge it at those stations 🤔
