  • Mr. Matuschek is lonely on this Christmas and hoping to share some Christmas cheer with one of his employees. He gets down to the new delivery boy, Rudy, and sweeps him off his feet with food. I find Rudy's reaction to the food hysterical. He seems nearly aroused...romantically.

    I love how Mr. M didn't rudely invite himself into anyone's Christmas plans. While he did want company for the holiday, he was very respectful and was willing to spend it alone.

    Christmas is such a special time and no one should be alone during Christmas. Rudy and Mr M may not have got that perfect family bt atleast they got each other and seemed grateful for it...Wonderful scene..

    Isn´t it obvious? His life is in ruins as his wife cheated him and theyaare divorcing. He tried to commit suicide shortly before and now it is christmas eve and everybody has somebody to spend the evening with. Rudy the apprentice is his chance to not being lonely this night. In my opinion it is a very heartwarming scene.

    I liked this scene also. Especially the interaction between Rudy and Mr. Matuschek, how the young actor that plays Rudy , humble and humble.

    I loved this film, too. The boy "gets so upset about noodles and chicken etc." because he is probably a poor boy, and to be able to eat as much of what he wants to in a restaurant means a lot to him. Weird how people can "not get that" and think about pedophilia instead. It hasn't always been for granted for everybody and still is not, to be able to just go to the fridge or order whatever food you like.

      Alina Who thinks of a pedophile in this scene? It is very clear what is happening. The old man wants company on Christmas Eve. He tried everyone else, the only one left now is the boy.

    Geez will people stop making EVERYTHING sexual these days? Rudy hasn’t eaten a decent meal in likely forever and is thrilled at the sound of such an elegant dinner. Mr. Montechek is happy to not have to spend Christmas Eve alone. It’s about the basic human need for food and for companionship. That’s all. Simple and sweet.

    The sad part is, this movie was set in Hungary just before the war. One could imagine Peppi and Rudy off fighting with the Underground, and the recently married Krolecs and the Piroviches escaping to the West. Jimmy Stewart was in another film after this about a man escaping Germany.

    Is there a message to be garnered in this scene about Pepe’s future? Am I overthinking it? Or is it just Pepe still being excited about the sudden upturn in his career prospects?

    • @JamieRobles1

      Back then it wasn't uncommon for one person in the family to look for work in town. When you live in the city back then to send money to your family, you lived in an apartment . . . well more like a little room. You didn't make anything for yourself. Cooking in room wasn't allowed at the more respectable places. Depending on the house you lived in they cooked, but you had to pay for it. Any food you get you had to pay for it. So, if Rudy is trying to save money to send back home, he might have a piece of bread and coffee for breakfast. lunch was any special in town, and maybe something in expensive like soup for dinner. If he had money to spare.

      Boy, talk about a clueless comment. You can't get past your current sensibilities (limited as they seem to be) and consider it through the time and place of the story. And actually, a first class chicken noodle soup (especially made in Europe) is probably a wonderful thing! I am always moved by this scene. It shows that despite what has happened to him, Mr. M hasn't lost faith and is moving forward - chicken soup and all!!!

    • @beth12svist
      @beth12svist Před 5 lety +1

      Huh. Being Central European, I have no idea what should make European chicken noodle soup so much more special than American chicken noodle soup; but it's certainly always been one of my favourite soups. I would get just as excited, and I live now.

    • @erpollock
