Thats not correct, Crucible doesn't make m390, bohler makes m390. Carpenter makes 204p and Crucible makes cpm 20cv. All analogs of each other with some slight compositional variance. Micro tech went to bohler to make a compositional adjustment to m390 to increase edge retention, I can say that in testing it cuts identical to m390 at the same Rockwell but MT is running around 59 and m390 at 60-61 has a huge jump in edge retention over the soft MK version, increased corrosion resistance (haven't tested that) and easier/better polishing and it absolutely does polish quicker and nicer on the stones than m390 does. They haven't released a compositional break down of the steel but I have no doubt that the composition is very close to one another and in use no one will ever tell a difference, good sharpeners will notice that it responds to polish much like cpm154 does and polishes very very easy. Basically MT tried to make up marketing with a new steel and make people think they was getting something different and in all reality all they are getting is sub par 58-59hrc m390 and as anyone that knows steels knows m390 that's below 62rc is pretty much pointless. Considering m390 doesn't really start to come alive until 62 and that's when you are starting to see the performance m390 is capable of. Even at 60-61 the performance isn't great and below 60 you are just paying premium cost for a premium steel and getting Basically 14c28n performance.
Thanks for the correction! I also heard that Microtech had been better about their heat treatment on the latest models. But I don't have the tools to check and I don't do anything besides edc the knives(cutting packages and occasional zip ties) so alot of the small differences I will probably never notice.
uh, while it’s true that m390 performs sub optimally at 58-60 hrc, it’s absolutely not ‘14c28n’ level performance. it’s still got very high edge retention.
While 62+ is good for m390 it does ramp up from 60.5 and up, not worthless. MT did not change M390 I think they just raised HRC from 58-60 to 58.5 to 60.5.
There are plenty of test out there showing MT in the 60,61+ range and some were duds, it happens on mass production. I have heard them mention that some of the knives are lowered on purpose for toughness. Obviously most of these are hard use knives so that makes sense, being they warranty them for life.
as someone already very into knives just discovering your channel through this video youre doing probably the best job at explaining the knife hobby ive ever seen
I don't know if anyone has beat me to this or not, but Civivi uses a 10cr15mov core and 9cr18mov for their Damascus and it's actually pretty good. It's well heat treated. Jared Neeves actually did a comparison of Nitro V and Damascus on the vision fg comparing the edge retention between the two and I also Believe 20cv WE version was included in the mix
Great rotation but now we need a full collection vid...lol. I think the Vision is 9cr and VG10 but im not sure. Chris Reeve knives also created cpm s35 with Crucible...Great Vid Man
@@nextgenspawn even on super popular models, the base steel isn't S30v often enough. If it became common/cheap enough to get lumped into more models, that would be awesome.

@@nextgenspawn Yeah, the composition of production damascus is often difficult to find out (at least until you get to ultra premium knives using stuff like Damasteel). Personally, I hate being left in the dark about the composition; like, they could at least tell us if it's a stainless damascus or if it needs to be oiled! For Civivi's damascus, I've been told they layer 9Cr18MoV (roughly equivalent to 440b) and 10Cr15CoMoV (equivalent to VG10) together, which is a good combo in my opinion. Stainless, ok edge retention, and isn't a pain to sharpen; it's probably the best damascus available at that price point.
Nice collection. Thanks for sharing. I think all card collectors should have a good knife to make a clean cut on the tuck case seal. Like you, I'm also from Texas and have gone down the slippery slope of knife collecting, lol. Makes me wonder: are you into firearms as well?
Tool steel doesn't mean its used to make tools..... it means its used to make tooling die stamps and cutting bits. Basically its steel thats used to make steel products. D2 was made famous by stamping parts for battle tanks in ww2 i believe.
From a fellow knife nerd who watches knife video's like porn. I will give you a 9/10 on the video. You make a couple snall mistakes explaining materials. Otherwise great video. You dont see a lot of people throw a civivi in the video. I agree china doesn't equal bad knives anymore.. even some of the gas station knives from china are pretty decent if steel composition isn't a issue. For me its all about steel comp. I want something i can put a hair popping edge on and have it hold that edge thru regular use. I strop my carry at the end of each day to help maintain a edge.
Thank you! Ill take it considering I am new to making knife content. And I agree. I want a long lasting edge. And a dull blade is more dangerous than a sharp blade. I strop my knives between rotations!
So i was going to include the link to it but it seems the seller is no longer on that platform. So I looked for another similar product and unfortunately I couldn't find any...
I saw a video of it doing that and I tested mine but mine has not disengaged. But I also don't do any thing that would put weight or impact on the spine of my knives. That's what my pry bar is for! But I can see why it's scary... but mine hasn't yet at least
Maybe! I just know I haven't had an issue with the edge retention on either of mine so far. Especially the Stitch Ram-Lok. I carry/use that alot and it's still screaming sharp.
Subbed, love me some knife content. Spyderco is definitely the best large production knife company! Oh and spyderco most definitely has a trademark on the round hole, which honestly I find a little bizarre that you can trademark something like that, but they have made it a signature identifier of their knives so I guess it’s allowed

Your video might be good, but as a career metallurgist I'm shocked that anyone would call 440c "not a good steel". I couldn't keep playing the video. And in the league of the knives I buy, carry, and use, and enjoy(which is literally steered by my OPINION), I see it as less than VG-10. I'd pick 154CM before 440C. Sabenzas... whomp whomp. Such overhyped, overpriced nonsense knives that exist solely for the soft handed internet "knife guys". They're almost as laughable as everything Benchmade makes.
As someone who grew up with one griptilian and carried it for a decade, I resent that benchmade comment. I know they had alot of QC issues but I haven't personally ran across any 🤷♂️ they're heavily over priced now though, but that is what these legacy brands have become now. I want a Chaves Redention Dual Grind with the skull clip !! ^^
I've had my eye on the Chaves brand for a bit. They look right down my alley! And I love the skull clip
