Love that slide accompanying the national anthem - it reminds me of the animated night-time scene that Central would use in their closedown routine a few years later.

I love the Unreal version of the national anthem

Something I always enjoy about the sign-offs (or closedowns) from the UK are the gentle reminders to shut off the televisions. Power smart!

No, safety smart. Poor manufacturing of some British-made TV sets of the 1970s (Models using the Pye 697 and Thorn 1600 chassis' spring to mind) were at risk of catching fire if left plugged in while not being used.

That would explain the closedowns I've watched where the announcer reminds people to actually unplug their sets. I wonder how many instances of sets catching fire actually happened.

Enough to give the Pye 697 a bad name (any British TV repair man will coil in horror at the mere mention of it) and enough for Thorn to issue a recall on all their sets using the 1600 chassis.
It wasn't just 1970s sets, though. 1950s and early 60s sets could be prone to catching fire, but that was because of the number of bodgers that were around in the 1960s and still "operating" well into the 70s, although solid state TVs and then colour TV sets killed off the bodgers! :D

Yeah don't forget to switch off your set or your 1970's PYE TV Set will blow up, lol

Interesting closedown with the ATV clock fading to houses and flats and the shorter version of the National Anthem being played.
