1875 Baldwin steam locomotive, V&T #22 "Inyo"

  • 2 July 2011 at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. They steam up this 4-4-0 engine for one weekend per year (Independence Day weekend).
    I had shot some video of it in 2009 with my old camera but wanted to get something with the new one. Back in 2009, they only had driven it out of the barn. This year, it was being run back and forth on about 100 yards of track.
    Given the Civil War Re-enactment involving a train on the museum's loop would have been closer to authentic with this 1875 engine than with the 1905 engine they were using, I'm guessing that they don't trust the Inyo to be able to pull passenger cars anymore -- or maybe they just didn't want the smoke from rifles and cannons dulling the brass work!
    "Brass Betsy" here was featured in quite a few movies and TV shows. You can learn just about everything there is to know about this engine from:

    She is an original, and was owned by Paramount Pictures. She was the stand in for the TEXAS in Walt Disney's THE GREAT LOCOMOTIVE CHASE, and the newly restored B&O WILLIAM MASON took the place of the GENERAL.
    Can you imagine being a little kid when this was put into service? When roads were dirt and along comes this beautifully crafted hunk of brass and iron! I've been hooked ever since I saw her in the film in 1956... I even had the chance to work on the original GENERAL's restoration.

    I'm a friend of the NSRM (Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City), some clarification on the 22. She was purchased for the V&T and was delivered as a coal burner, to which the rail road promptly switched to wood, years afterwards then to oil. During the restoration the Inyo was restored to circa 1895(ish) appearance, and restored to burn wood like she did. She has an operating pressure of 135 psi, but is only run at 75, to maintain her boiler and keep wear and tear down to a minimum.

      she was even a Disney star (before it was cool!) and appeared in one of Walt Disney's lesser known film The Great Locomotive chase as the Texas while the Laffeyette and the William Mason at the B&O rairoad museum played the Yonah and the General respectively

    @Chris9017 Probably has to do with noise limits; the stock four-chime would need voicing work (a commonly needed task on pipe organs) to sound properly at the reduced steam flow from a smaller whistle valve.

    This steam engine #22 was used in an episode of Gunsmoke called ' The bullet' where Marshall Dillon was being transported by train to Denver by train to get a bullet removed from his back. Years confirmed during these episodes run from 2863 to 1871, Don't know if any years were confirmed while this stream engine was in service...

    The engineer in this can't blow the whistle. The idea is to blow it all the way for it to sound majestic and be heard.

  • @jacobwoods8738
    @jacobwoods8738 Před 10 lety +1

    The whistle is actually a 4 chime, but because the Inyo runs at only 75 psi it sounds much "wimp-ier" or higher-pitched. Also my biggest beef is that the city will not let them blow the whistle that loud. If I ever become a volunteer there, I would be fired the first time because I love to blow the whistle long and hard. The 25 has a beautiful whistle, but it is rarely ever heard at full might too.

    • @isaiahwilliams2642
      @isaiahwilliams2642 Před 9 lety

      Are you sure she has a four chime whistle? She's always sounded somewhat like that throughout her film career, and often when the whistle is blown hard, it squeaks and cracks.

    • @johnerikson7094
      @johnerikson7094 Před 7 lety

      still sounds beautiful though! I'm not sure that pressure would make a difference as to the pitch. I mean the walt Disney world railroad has buckeye 3 chime whistles (at least 2 actually) and they run their locomotives at what? 100? 125 PSI? and these whistles can be found on mini steam locomotives that have a boiler pressure of 50-75 PSI, and they'll still sound the same. I think the only thing pressure would have to do with the whistle is probably what it sounds like when the valve is not all the way open.

    • @renegadeoflife87
      @renegadeoflife87 Před 5 lety +1

      @@johnerikson7094 Too low of a pressure will result in not all of the chimes playing. She's only sounding her higher 2 maybe 3 chimes, thus the off-chord sound. To fix this the whistle bell would have to be lowered slightly, and the languid disk machined to produce a larger opening for a higher volume of steam. Her voice would be forever altered, but it would still be closer to original than it is now.

    • @johnerikson7094
      @johnerikson7094 Před 5 lety

      OdinYggd I’m guessing that it sounds like the Eureka locomotive except lower pitched when blown on full pressure since the two locos have similar sounding whistles. Is that correct or no?

  • @Keeper1st

    Oh, no train brakes either, the cars use link and pin and there is no air hose. If you see and hear the Inyo up close it's sounds as though the air from the compressor is just being discharged into the air, a wheezy sound.

    Was she ever fitted with air brakes like the William mason? I noticed the pump but I didn't see a brake solenoid on the right side of the engine

    • @BCSchmerker
      @BCSchmerker Před 10 lety +1

      Actually, the William Mason, a Baltimore & Ohio historic engine, was never fitted with an air-brake system. The V&T retrofitted Westinghouse Safety Brakes to all locomotives and rolling stock through the 1890's; the three ten-wheelers from the second #25 were delivered from the Baldwin Locomotive Works with factory-installed Westinghouse air. #22 originally was equipped with the link-and-pin coupling systems typical of pre-1890's railroad operations, and that's how the Nevada State RR Museum outfitted her in restoration.

    • @isaiahwilliams2642
      @isaiahwilliams2642 Před 9 lety +1

      B. C. Schmerker Actually, INYO was originally fitted with air brakes in 1877, and she's been restored to her circa 1893 appearance, so it would make sense to have her equipped with air brakes now.

  • @Hendo56
    @Hendo56 Před 10 lety

    Or maybe it doesn't pull passenger cars anymore because it doesn't have any brakes. The B&O Train Museum in Baltimore used to have it's 4-4-0 WILLIAM MASON pull passenger cars. It stopped because it didn't have any brakes, either!

    • @williamou417

      Locomotives back in the 1800s have no brakes, so they have to spin the wheel to reverse in order to stop

    • @gabrielbennett5162
      @gabrielbennett5162 Před 6 lety +1

      Joseph Watts Genoa is on display at the California State Railroad Museum in Old Town Sacramento, California, immaculately restored and in operable condition. Reno, sadly, has not been so lucky. She was caught in a 1995 wildfire that engulfed the Old Tuscon Studio amusement park in Arizona that she calls home and was badly damaged. Her owners aggravated the problem by letting her sit, exposed to the elements, afterward. She was given a shoddy cosmetic restoration for her appearance in the Will Smith movie, "The Wild Wild West" (1999), but was again left to rot outside afterwards and has continued to deteriorate since, although there has been some talk off and on by various museums of purchasing her and giving her a proper restoration.
