    My interpretation is that Giovanni has a rare ticket, which allows him to see both the afterlife and his life.
    This is why he sees his younger self.

      Aww I like that idea! I feel like there was a connection to why he was seen in the constellation Horologium though, I don't know what that constellation represents.

    • @GabrielusPrime
      @GabrielusPrime Před 2 měsíci

      @@RosMo4I don't know anything about astrology or meaning of constellations, but I _do_ watch/read a lot of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. In the anime Fairy Tail, the celestial spirits Lucy can summon are based off constellations, with the strongest being the ones based off the ones used in the western zodiac. And, as it turns out, I remember that the weak one in the form of a living clock had the name Horologium, and always said what the time was first thing every time he was summoned -(even though that was rarely, if ever, what she actually summoned him for)- so, the constellation _probably_ represents time somehow.

    OOOOH MY GOOOOOD, I LOVED THIS MOVIE WHEN I WAS A BIT MORE YOUNGER. WHEN I FIRST DISCOVERED IT I WAS LIKE "THIS IS SO AMAZING WTH" AND I STILL THINK THE SAME. istg the ending always gets me bad, i def did not expect it, and the music at the final scene with campanella and giovanni in the railroad? MMMH, absolute masterpiece. i remember i used to make fanart of giovanni and campanella lmao

    The world that Night on the Galactic Railroad and the Life of Budori are in the same land.
    I have read the four different translations and it is very quiet. The story is both dark, sad, light and more...you have to have the patience and the attention to details.
    Also I watched this after my sister's death and tried to show my mother and father. I told them this film helps process death and then it feels like my sister is where she should be. My nephew actually used this as his way to cope as well, his father is still having trouble with this. He doesn't get Anime already

      All of Kenjis work takes place in Ihatov, a fictional version of the Iwate prefecture where he grew up

  • @charlie_nax
    @charlie_nax Před 5 měsíci +5

    some notes:
    -story probably takes place in ihatovo, a fantasy place that can look pretty different depending of which story miyazawa was writting at the time
    -in the film every written thing that is not the japanese title cards is in esperanto, a neat detail and nod to miyazawa who was a lover and amateur speaker of the language
    -the void as a heaven makes sense for buddhist people since it could mean the realease of the soul and break of the reincarnation cycle, so eternal oblivion but as a positive thing
    -if you gonna watch gusko budori no denki i recommend far more the 1994 film, it dives less in budori hallucinations and more in the reality and the feelings of the people in the story

    i thought the small boy we saw could be about the death of childhood, that going through the loss of his closest friend would take that, with how hard it is to deal with the loss of a peer at that age.

    If it helps, they're regular human boys in the book.
    "True heaven" to a Buddhist is a soul that doesn't reincarnate, deciding not to experience life anymore.
    I think you've understood what you've seen as well as anyone should.

  • @StacieJoy
    @StacieJoy Před 24 dny +1

    The small boy is Giovanni's dad. He died on his way home. The man searching for Campenelli's body see's Giovanni and says "isn't your dad home yet? He just sent a letter saying how excited he was to come home" implying that he should have come home already. Since he hasn't, we can conclude that the cat in the afterlife who looks just like Giovanni is Giovanni's dad, who is dead.

    I watched this myself a few weeks ago on CZcams. The person who uploaded it has it in both English and Japanese. I went to play the English version on my TV, but for some reason it was in Japanese instead. I ended up watching the whole thing subbed, but later found out that I just needed to turn off 5.1 surround sound to get English.

    Beautiful and sad movie. Even if everything isn't explained the ending is one of best depiction of coping with a loved one's death

  • @Succuborous
    @Succuborous Před 6 měsíci +1

    I had this on vhs or dvd as a kid (cant remember which, but I remember it only being subbed and no options to change the language, so maybe vhs?) and I can confirm the subbed sounded much better. It seems like older works have a much harder time changing the flow of dialogue to accommodate for different languages than newer stuff, so that's probably why the dialogue sounded so disjointed.
    I definitely agree that the slowness was a lot, and when I was a kid I definitely got sidetracked during parts of this movie, but now that I'm older I think I can appreciate those scenes a little more. It's definitely something you have to have a lot of time to ruminate on.
    Looking back at it, I feel like the pacing was intentional, and used to make the feel of the film go from a sterotypical fantasy adventure to something unnerving and heavy, which it definitely achieved. Even as a kid, I remember sitting in front of my giant box tv in silence while the credits rolled, not sure if I should cry or not, as I contemplated that Camponella was dead. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was traumatizing, but it has stuck with me to the point that I remember this movie in it's entirety while the vast majority of the rest of my childhood is kind of a blur.
    TL;DR: it's a wonderful movie, and one that intentionally leaves you to decide your own ending and theories, but please don't let children watch it lol

    15:12 You know, I head the saying that humans are put on this earth to learn how to love, and that dogs are here to teach us; being born knowing how to love, and thus, not living as long. The part about dogs aside, I thought of that phrase. Zanelli has much to learn about life; he's immature and unkind, and perhaps, he was the one who needed more time. Time to live, and to mature, and to reflect on his actions. Time that he wouldn't have had if not for Campanella. It's kind of a bitter thing, to be sure, but life is bitter sometimes. Just my thoughts on that aspect of the story.

    All my life my dad told me bridges are special and magical and i think thats one of the reasons he was in the train was bcs he crossed the bridge that was over the river, the one Campanella fell in that and their friendship connected them. That's my interpretation

    I've been really fascinated by this movie ever since I stumbled upon it on youtube a few years ago. I also fall asleep nearly every time I watch it, but that's not an insult to it. I think the movie, perhaps related to Buddhism, is about space. Specifically the space for recollection and contemplation. It's similar to movies like Blade Runner, 2001, Koyaanisqatsi, or Thin Red Line which are primarily concerned with creating an atmospheric experience rather than narrative. One where the "world" itself is more the main character and the protagonist floats through it. Something that aims for an emotional resonance more akin to poetry or impressionism.

    I found out about this story from a manga called Act Age, the play they portrayed was very impactful. It was a good manga, unfortunately the author turned out to be an absolute monster. I highly recommend pirating it at the very least, a lot of "refugees" from act age went to Oshi no Ko as it was felt to be a spiritual successor. That is to say they are completely different stories but the it itself is top notch, have a go if yall dont mind an axed ending

    Based on the great (never-finished) novel of Kenji Miyazawa, who wrote it after the dead of his little sister, this adaptation achieves a sensation similar to walking in the edge of a beautiful, fascinating and strange dream, sad and dark.
    A story told quietly to let yourself led by its mystery and sensations while thinking about friendship, life and death, eternity, weakness of time, sacrifice, universe and memory...leading everything to one of the most heartbreaking twists ever.
    Not many times has anime reached such level in the '80s.
