I don't personally find the music ironic. It sounds a bit somber and depressing. Like Sunday music - when you're unemployed, everyday is like Sunday. I also initially mistook the tack piano for a piano with a chorus effect, which would have been a very contemporary sound for the time.
I always thought the music sounded like a sort of drunk Erik Satie, I love it.
