Man, I remember this so clearly. This was when Slipknot was really on the upshot, they were touring Australia I think and had a killer set there just after the Volume 3 release. “Duality” and “Before I Forget” sent them to the stratosphere. .
Knowing Joey had just finished his gig with Slipknot, no small feat, and then went into this gig with such obvious energy, it shows the power of passion to have such energy. I can’t think of many things that could energize anyone than having to save a Metallica show.

Dave Lombardo played only a couple songs, but he apparently said how he didn't really know any Metallica songs past Master of Puppets album, or just the 80s in general. Joey grew up playing and listening to all the songs. Apparently as the show went on Metallica threw songs at him they never even rehearsed beforehand because of how well he was doing. A lot of Slipknot was right behind Joey on the kit and were watching the entire show. Corey Taylor of Slipknot talks about the whole thing on a podcast, he obviously recaps much better than I can here: czcams.com/video/ZuaS2NHlHds/video.html&ab_channel=KNOTFEST (Skip to 6:45 on the video to hear them talking about Joey filling in)

So worth the Patreon and PayPal donate like I have said many times, your commentary really has been such a light for me! You do a lot on your channel I mean the lessons alone are just worth the support. So f*in badass. Man those feet have some legendary speed don't they? His look was fresh as hell... Most of his life starting at 4 or 5 was behind pots and pans and when he was 8 (I think) he got his first kit. In Slipknot they called him SUPERBALL because he was like a super bouncy ball. Never ran out of energy. Very humble. Always said you have to listen to all music all genres to inform how you play. And took drum lessons until his death because he said he got something out of it every time. Legend

Joey played on 8 songs ,Dave Lombardo played on 3 songs and Lars’s drum tech played one song. Good thing those amazing musicians were there or Metallica wouldn’t have played at all. Lars wasn’t thrilled about it either at the time. He had some medical problems that he needed to be hospitalized for. Joey and Dave saved the concert. Joey used to play in a Metallica tribute band back in the day, so he knew these songs well.

Dave Lombardo played, Lars' drum tech did fade to black and Joey did indeed play Creeping Death and a few others. The night was delayed by at least an hour but was something special to see!

I was at this gig. It was Download 04. There was a two hour wait for Metallica who were headlining that night. They came out before and James addressed the crown and said Lars got sick on the way to the gig. (it came out after that he’d had a massive panic attack on the way to gig). The wait was them practising with drummers they could grab from who had played and was around that day. They opened with Battery and the Four Horsemen with Save Lombardo, Lars’ tech played Fade to Black mid set, but the rest was played by Joey Jordison. It was amazing. In all they only played an hour as that was all the time they could practice and they came on so late because of the delay. Joey played Seek and Destroy, Enter Sandman, Creeping Death, Last Caress, Wherever I May Roam, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Sad but True and NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. Seeing him reserved for that was amazing.

I was there that day. It’s was one of the most incredible things to witness.
Lars was sick and couldn’t perform so that afternoon/evening, drummers from all the other bands went to practice with Metallica so they could play. When they came out (I think just over and hour late but they were forgiven for it instantly) they had selected 3 drummers. Dave Lombardo from Slayer, Fleming Larsen who was Lars drum tech at the time (R.I.P 🤘🏻) and Joey who ended up doing the majority of the set. That was my first year at Download Festival 2004 and I’ve been 14 times including 04. That Metallica set will alway rank as one of the best ever

they had a small rehearse the day before.. it was at download festival 04 right after rock in rio 04 in portugal. lars had an anxiety/panic attack and he had to stay in hospital for some days.
james came and asked other drummers if they could fill lars gap and which songs they knew..lombardo played some, lars drum tech played one or two and joey played what he knew. metallica was supposed to play approx 2 hours/2:30 hours and they just played 1 hour and something, most of that time because of joey, otherwise it would be like a 15/20 min show or even no show :D
there's Enter Sandman pro video too somewhere on youtube and an amateur/audience live video of the show but with pro audio, i think they made an 'album' off of this show..

I’m sure someone already said this (I’m just too lazy to read through all the comments) but this happened at Download and Lars was sick. Slipknot just walked off stage and James was running down the hallway begging for drummers. He runs up to Joey and asks if he can fill in for 3-4 songs. Then they got a few other drummers to finish the set. It’s been a while since I saw the video explaining this event, but that’s the best to my recollection. I’m sure some other Maggots can fill in the gaps and fix any mistakes. Number 1 forever!🤘🏻🤘🏻❤️

That's Lars' kit, 2 hi-hats, left & right, 2 medium crashes, 3 rock crashes and custom China, all Zildjian and Joey used Paiste's Black Alpha Slipknot Edition around that time, basically Alpha Series with Colorsound 900 black coat. You can also tell by the drum setup, Lars uses a 7 piece Tama kit incl. snare and Joey used an 9 piece Pearl kit incl. snare.
