I surprise myself in saying that Froome may win this Giro. If you do a microcycle-mesocycle count for the Giro-Tour double, the condition peaks don't line up equally for both races. The Giro is one week too far from the Tour to make a nice condition peak in both the 3rd week of the Giro and another nice peak in the 3rd week of the Tour. The only way to do it is to either peak in the 3rd week of the Giro and try to extend the mesocycle peak for the last week of the Tour, which is very, very risky as a rider could potentially and spectacularly blow up in the last week of the Tour after looking great in the preceding two weeks ... or to arrive at the Giro going into a depressed physical condition state in the mesocycle , spending the week between the 1st and 2nd rest days grovelling and suffering, and ride back into form for the last two weeks.
If Froome is doing this, then he is only going to get better as the Giro goes on compared to many other riders. After spending a week suffering and trying to hold on while he was in a depressed physical condition state, he is now finishing the first week of the physiological performance up-cycle. So, he's now had one week of incrementally improving form and by the end of next week, his general performance is going to be comparatively better again compared to his rivals.
Froome should take some time back on Yates in the TT and it is possible, if Sky has planned it well, that he will be smashing it on the climbs on stages 19 and 20, while Yates may be struggling to keep up. It will make for a fantastic final week of racing - and that's not including what Dumoulin might be capable of in the TT and final week. Yates may have enough time to hold on against the others or he may not.
Everything is an "if" - this is currently speculation, but it would explain Froome's return on the Zoncolan.
He will finish the Giro one week early for peak form in the mesocycle, but by doing that, he will then be coming into the first week of the form up-cycle at the start of the Tour and reaching the peak of that physiological up-cycle during week three. After watching him in the first week, I am surprised to say that it is still possible for Froome to do the Giro-Tour double. The physiological performance science tracks well with what we are seeing. If he does do this double, do not be surprised if he doesn't do a Stephen Roche and win the Worlds as well.

I'd love Yates to win. To have another GT winner would be good. The real question will be the T.T and how much additional time the M.S rider can gain over the next few mountain stages. I reckon Yates will need 1:50 over Domoulin going into the T.T.

Simon Yates is the best. I want him to win. Such a talented and disciplined rider will never turn to drugs like cheaters Duomoulin and Froome. Yes, Doumoulin won last year Giro by doping
