MK4 R32 VR6 Turbo Project Pt. 1

  • The only way to make a MK4 R32 VR6 better is by boosting it, and we're doing just that. Some may think this one should be left alone, however around here nothing is left untouched. In this one we dyno it in 100% stock form before doing any of the turbo upgrades. Follow along as we try and double the power to this 3.2 VR6.

    Mine is being rebuilt completely. The head gasket spacer works for lowering compression on the VR6 but isn't reliable unless you are on top of fluids almost after every track weekend. Save rebuilds down the road, if boosting, forge the engine. Or don't crank the boost up too much past 10...or don't be brutal on it with the revs if you do.

    • @COMotorsports
      @COMotorsports  Před 2 lety

      The Blue one on our channel is tracked a lot and lived many many years as a headspacer motor (14psi). Only reason it's getting upgraded is because it dropped a valve. Completely unrelated to a headspacer.

    So just little more detail on the 2wd dyno of a 4wd car. The VW 4motions are not "Quattro" they dont have permanent 4wd with a torsen LSD like the Audis. They have a angle gear on the "fwd" gearbox that transmits power to the rear. In the back there is a hydraulics clutch pack system "haldex system" that controls the power transmitted to the back by regulating the pressure on the clutch packs There is a controller and a hydraulic pump that controlls the engagement of the clutch packs based on what the ECU reads from wheel speed, engine rpm, throttle position, steering angle sensor and bunch of sensors. All they do to run in on the dyno is pull the fuse that send power to the haldex system and that way it is just fwd with no chance of the rear wheels engaging.

    This vid series has come up at the right time . Looking at selling my stage3 tuned Mk7 R and getting a TT Mk1 or Mk2 VR 3.2 , I remember when the TT 8N was released and how close it was the the concept car .
    Having had a couple of lower back ops driving manual can end up be painful , so how reliable are the early DSG’s ? If a cleaner manual comes up I might have to bite the bullet .
    If you don’t mind what’s the difference between the high output 20V four to the lower power 20V four ?
    There’s a Mk4 Golf R32 for sale near me ,their asking $25K AU ,it’s not in that great condition but Mk4 R32’s aren’t that common in Australia .

      Earlier DSGs meaning the 6 speed from the mk.5 golfs are very strong and perfectly reliable as long as you keep to regular oil changes at proper intervals or preferably earlier. I owned a 2008 Mk5 GTi DSG from new and had zero issues. Later sold that and bought a used Mk5 R32 DSG in 2017 and that had problems with intermitantly jerky take-offs from standstill aside from being a bit clunky in the lower gears in slow traffic. Turned out the previous owner was careful with engine oil changes but ignored proper gearbox oil changes. The problem according to my local VW specialists is build up of metal suspended in the gearbox oil will short the electonics in the mechatronic gearbox ECU which sits inside the gearbox bathed in oil. I had to replace that (expensive!!) and replaced the dual wet clutch (not expensive) too while I was at it and that sorted everything out, no problem till today, it now feels very nearly as smooth as a torque converter transmission in city traffic. I was told some of the later 7 speed DSGs that came with dry clutches had problems due to owners treating them like they were torque converter autos, meaning holding the car stationary on uphill inclines using the motor rather than brake. This wears out the dry clutch fast.
      Good luck in your search:)

    Will be an interesting journey, wonder how the gearbox, transfer case, diff, haldex will cope with 400HP? My manual MK6 R became 2WD for the past couple of months not long after replacing a slipping clutch (45K kms and stage 2 Bluefin tune+turbo back Miltek, stock clutch couldn't cope with that tune, flashed back to stock and no slipping, now running SACHS perf clutch still with DMF ). I thought the 2WD issue was the transfer case input shaft gear slipping similar to I think one of your previous vids, but suddenly a couple of days ago it is happily 4WD again... very confusing issue.

    Interested in the origins of that car being LHD, any ideas? I have the 5dr version, and like most Japanese imports it's RHD (because like UK, Australia, NZ we drive on the left hand side of the road).

    So your gonna pull the motor and put a head spacer????? WHY???? If your gonna add boost and going to the trouble of pulling the motor why not build the motor properly? Get some lower compression FORGED pistons meant for boost!! And I would upgrade the connecting rods as well with all ARP fasteners including the head stud kit!! Also get whatever diffs needed from Quaife so that you can actually put the power to the ground!
