- The collegiate church stands in the centre of Arona (Italy), a few metres from one of the most important monasteries of the Middle Ages. The beautiful town is on Lake Maggiore and from its bell tower you can see the entire lake. The tower of the Church of the Virgin Mary was built in Romanesque style in the year 1000, then restored and rebuilt at the top in 1662, when new bells were cast. The bells were recast in 1809 in Milan.

The bells are sung in D flat major and three of the original bells remain, because the second was remoulded in 1866, while the fourth cracked in 1884 and had to be remoulded. The five bells are ringing during the sunset; we managed to climb the bell tower, running up the stairs, arriving in time to film the view and the historic bells.
The old church of Santa Maria was built in the 9th century and entirely rebuilt in Gothic style in 1450, at the expense of a few nobles and the powerful monastery that stood twenty metres away. Arona had enjoyed enormous economic growth, being the centre of the Catholic and very good Borromeo seigniory, which had given birth to enlightened saints like Carlo Borromeo and magnificent archbishops like his cousin Federico Borromeo. Archbishop Federico was granted the title of Collegiate Church by the Pope, richly decorated inside with stuccoes and beautiful frescoes, which were redone in the second half of the 19th century, when Romanesque and Byzantine elements were added to the Gothic layout. The interior is a picture gallery of masterpieces, including Gaudenzio Ferrari's magnificent polyptych from 1511.
