But.... is (t)here the way back, the back track from when you’re called a radical, a liberal, oh fanatical, to where birds in trees are singin so happily, oh joyfully, oh playfully watching me ??
To me, this song encapsulates the feeling of disillusionment that arises when the good intentions fostered throughout childhood, school, and among friends and family come crashing down in the face of harsh reality. In the outside world, far from the familiar comforts of home and friends, your emotions hold little sway; instead, success is measured solely by your productivity and ability to navigate social dynamics. This is the sound of crushing down on the reality and to me it sounds sad.
It’s their reality they created, not your/our reality. That’s part of the disillusionment, that their reality is all of reality when it’s far from it. Wake up.
This song should be a reminder to all of us to not take life so seriously, don't make it a constant focus of work work work "got to climb the ladder of success". The innocence and curiosity of childhood vanishes very quickly once children start school and are made to believe their self worth is dependent on their performance in academics, sports, music, popularity....
Schools are just designed to turn out robots unfortunately, they kill creativity. I work for an IT multinational and the company has a section that goes into schools to teach kids 8 years and up how to code in the hopes they will turn into more robots for the line in the future. They sell a dream that does not exist in reality. Economists and government don't want artists because they are not often high earners and producing loads of tax. I'm an engineer, not an artistic bone in my body but artists amaze me with the way they see the world, we need more of that I think.
This song is all about losing your magic in conforming to society. Who are we deep inside? I'm 44 and this song came out around when I was born but I remember always digging it even when I was young and on fishing trips with my daddy. 70s music was the epitome of depth, showmanship, actual bands playing music and they were soulfully jamming!!!!
