    TBH, I can’t really see how Sheffield Wednesday had a valid claim to be re-instated back in The First Division. For they’d been relegated at the end of the 1989-90 season (maybe unluckily) under the “normal” rules, and thus had had no involvement at all in the play-offs. For this matter was surely was surely a play-off issue first and foremost. Therefore, if you’re going to demote the actual play-off final winners, then surely the logical replacement is the play-off final runners-up, in this case when Sunderland replaced Swindon? All a matter of speculation I guess, but also of course now all "water under the bridge" as it were.

    The play offs should never have started in the first place, the 2nd thing is it was the play offs so got nothing to do with Sheff w. If that Swindon had been in London they would have got away with it !, QPR, Spurs, WHU just to name a few. Anyhow SAFC do deserve something for the utter rubbish we have had to put up with for the last 46 years, and even now lanuashing in the 3rd tier of football because of amature owners and it is still going on.

    I seem to recall that Sheff Wed were never in a relegation position that season until the end of the final day's fixtures. They were never going to get a reprieve after Swindon's demotion. The Football League were determined to uphold their new and still controversial play off system. When the play off winners were disqualified they gave their place to the play off runners up. That's why Sunderland went up.

      @charliepeebles2531 Před 5 lety

      @@jennytaylor415 Yes I agree 100%. Sheff Wed were relegated fair and square. I wasn't voicing any opinion on the subject, I was just explaining the reasoning behind the Football League's decision to promote Sunderland rather than give Sheff Wed a reprieve. The Football League had made their decision about Swindon not being allowed to go up before the play off semi finals had even taken place. They were desperately hoping any team but Swindon would win the play offs so they could avoid a messy situation. They had also decided beforehand that if Swindon did win the play offs then who ever the beaten finalists were would go up instead. I was told all of this some months after it happened by the then president of the Football League who I was casually acquainted with at the time.

    Firstly they should have relegated Sunderland,then with the major issue sorted out they could have tossed a coin between Swindon Town and Sheff. Wed.In fact most football matters could be sorted out by just relegating Sunderland.

      There is only one reason Sunderland got the promotion spot after Swindon's disqualification. The Football League were determined to uphold their new and still controversial play off system. When the play off winners were demoted they gave their place to the play off runners up, simple as that. It didn't matter who the play off runners up were, that was the team going up. It was all about supporting the play off system. The Sunderland board knew before the play off final that they were going up regardless of the result.
