Free troybilt pony tiller, what's wrong with this thing??

  • I got this tiller for free. it belonged to my cousins pastor. they said they believed the transmission went bad on it. follow along as i try and figure out what it will take to get this machine going again.

    As a general rule when multiple bolts hold on a part I never tighten one bolt until all bolts are threaded in a few turns. Also turning the bolt backwards first until you hear/feel the thread seat then going forward will also help prevent cross threading.

    Takes a lot to destroy one of those transmissions. Metal fines,yup. Bad seals,yup. Major leaks,yup.Bad bearings,yup. But the gears will take serious abuse. If it were me I would take it apart,clean and check/replace the bearings. New seals and the new front shaft dust cover and you'll have a 20 year tiller.

    I have an old TB Pony from 1983. Has not been run in 10 years so need to go through the carburetor. Can you tell me which carb kit you used? Thanks!

      RB, I don't remember exactly which kit it was. I ordered a bunch of them in bulk off ebay like 2 years ago. They are super cheap though. If yours has the one mounted over the tank most of the time it's just the diaphragm that goes bad. Thanks for watching I really appreciate it. God bless you
