A living man watching a dead man sing another dead mans song, who were once friends at one time. Priceless and goosebumps from the performance
So true... crazy. Hopefully they are together in the kingdom.
What a awesome comment r.i.p to Chris cornell and layne staley
Those were my thoughts.
when Chris started sing this song he knew he was already dead inside, he sang it so much couple years before his pass, as same as Layne during the unplugged record.
Imagine when you're dead, how this is gonna flip our heads
Don´t compare Cornell with Staley, he's not trying to be better than him and the original version, It's a tribute to a special era that they shared
@I'm God, BEOOOTCH Amen
Of all the covers, Chris has the best voice by far!
Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, Andrew Wood, Scott Weiland, Ben McMillan. All of these guys had their own style, something that just can't be replicated.
They are the most unique singers to ever exist. And i would say the best voices to exist ever in music.
But Chris it's best
Why do people feel the need to be hateful in comments? All of these guys from the 90's ... Staley, James Keenan, Cornell, Vedder, Patton, Weiland, Moreno, Yorke, Reznor ... we were so spoiled with excellence. Just listen and love it. Who cares who is singing it and if it's "different than Layne's version"? I'm sure if Layne were there he'd be nodding with his sunglasses on from the crowd.
Very well said. They were all a family that revolutionised the 90s with their excellence. But these stupid pricks without even understanding their bond and the feelings of respect they had for each other try to compare and demean one another. pathetic.
Alki46D I imagined that just then and it gave me chills 😶
Alki46D I understand exactly what you're talking about and people really shouldn't compare Cornell to Staley at all for this performance. Layne would have been very honored that Cornell performed this song for remembrance to honor him and Chris did a beautiful job in doing that here.
Great comment.
Alki46D ignorance
Chris and Layne can jam together now..RIP to them both.
😞
i feel like chris tried to cover all the songs he could before he waved goodbye to us. RIP to chris and all the amazing people of the 90s Seattle grunge scene
Chris is a truly genuine singer/songwriter and person. He means no disrespect. Layne was his FRIEND.... and he does this to pay tribute... he is not pretending to be better or worse, or anything like that. GREAT JOB, CHRIS!! I love you!!!!
And OMG that is the same holy shirt you wore when I met you!!!!
why would you even imply this is disrespectful? makes no sense to suggest something silly like that
Emily Wagner What a simple chord progression.
Guess his wife didn't pick out his clothes this time! He looks mighty fine with or without a shirt. Didn't wear a shirt in the 90s much, lol.
yup and I respect Chris but to me Layne was better. but what I hear and like doesn't mean everyone else will and I respect that. Great tribute with a song full of so much real emotion.
What an underrated song
+stonethecrow80 This song is Layne Staley's masterpiece with Mad Season, this song is not at all underrated, it is practically the anthem for grunge.
+Path To Exile I know it. I was saying it out of grunge context
+Path To Exile is underrated for the world that don't like grunge music, unfortunately :/
This was the anthem but only to those living it was way it felt to me then and now. But it was high school and college. Life sucked this song was something heart wrenching with hope.
Path To Exile nah dude wake up is his masterpiece
If there is one guy who could sing this is chris.
Lucky to catch Chris Cornell live a year before he passed. AMAZING. Both he and Staley are huge losses.
This performance makes me even more emotional knowing that he died, too. Both of them were so talented and gone too soon. I hope they're jamming out in heaven and they're at peace
You can tell Cornell loved this song, and did a great cover of it...
So beautiful, reast in peace Chris Cornell...
Fucking beautiful!!!!
I miss them all. A piece of me dissolved each time when we lost Kurt, Layne, Scott, and Chris.
No one sings covers like you anymore💙
Or anything else!!!
This is a great tribute by Chris. You can really feel the emotion in his voice
When I had leaned that Kurt Cobain had passed away I remember thinking "F*ck, at least we still have Layne Staley", then Staley passed away, and I said F*ck, at least we still have Cornell... And now, now is like F*CK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still can't get over Cornell's death.
💔
Its just him showing appreciation for a song he can relate to in his last years. Be thankful it was taped
Alice in Chains- Right turn. Layne and Chris... great. for those who don't know
Alice mud garden
Love that! Great trio of voices..actually four
I was hoping to see Chris tour with mad season. I thought it was the greatest idea to have Chris play with mad season! There was no musician that could pull it off except Layne's old pal Chris! He was so talented and had the greatest lead singer voice! I never had a chance to see you in concert with Soundgarden, audio slave, Temple of the dog or just you solo accousticly & I'm sad that I will never. you'll be forever missed Chris! God bless your beautiful family! Rest easy Chris! say hello to heaven.
Lyrics:
My pain is self-chosen
At least, so the prophet says
I could either burn
Or cut off my pride and buy some time
A head full of lies is the weight, tied to my waist
The river of deceit pulls down, oh oh
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
My pain is self-chosen
At least I believe it to be
I could either drown
Or pull off my skin and swim to shore
Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see
The river of deceit pulls down, yeah
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
The pain is self-chosen, yeah
Our pain is self-chosen
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Down, oh down
Two legends. They will forever be missed. #RIPChrisAndLayne 💔
Layne and Chris are now playing together! RIP Legends
Cornell was so gifted. Every cover he performed was reborn with a deeper meaning and connection. We are fortunate to get to share it
Very hard to watch his videos😔😔😔I regret not seeing him LIVE
Chris's high notes. Layne's roaring vocal Frye along with his weird pronunciation of the letter r(lol)
Kurt's lyricism and also unique vocal frye, and Eddie's ability to put these things together cemented a legacy of music that could never be duplicated in any other era. That is why this s music was truly great.
Its cold and rainy outside..this song is on and Chris is still alive. It was all a bad dream.
Chris has great taste in cover material & every cover is magical. I can't get enough of his voice.
I feel ya.
The foreshadowing in it all...
Absolutely beautiful. I love when I find Chris performances I have never seen. Thank you for this❤️
A teary eyed RIP brother. Legendary.
This is truly one of the finest songs ever recorded, and this version is just fine.
Blessed to be a part of the grunge movement and have memories to go with these songs! RIP my friends
LONG LIVE GRUNGE ~ FOREVER YOUNG! 💋🫶🏻🤘🏻🤍🪽🦴
So glad to hear this song from him. Thanks Chris for honoring him.
Luv this..never forgot about Chris Cornells comments regarding Layne Staley when their friend Andrew Wood I think his name was died. From Mother Love Bone? Layne was inconsolable one night sobbing on his hands and knees, childlike Chris said. and no one went to comfort or console him including Chris and he always thought about and regretted that. Man I love his voice. I love Layne Staley's even more
one of the greatest songs ever written.
Damn ... I'm going to miss this dudes voice and passion for great music. Rip in peace Mr. Cornell, you can sing this tune with Layne now...
R.I.P. Chris Cornell :(
This is beautiful it makes me teary eyed. We miss you you Layne and God bless Chris
I love this song. he was close to Layne. Chris loves music and the artist's. It's his way to show his respect. rest in peace Chris Cornell.. thanks for the memories
Wow!!! Love to hear him cover Wake Up or I'm Above. Love Mad Season. Now I'm in the mood to listen to the Singles soundtrack and hear me some Seasons and Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns! Thanks for the post:)
MY FAVORITE ALBUM. MAD SEASON!!! WAKE UP IS THE BEST SONG EVER!
song by another great vocalist R.I.P Chris Cornell...Layne Stanley
There is so much love & respect here...not a pinch of competition is happening. This is love, people! From the heart. If you know loss, you know! Loyalty is Beautiful💙💙
Chris knows he will never compare to his friend Layne. He knows. But this honors his memory in a very poignant, very sweet yet haunting way. I was there at this show and was bawling pretty much all the way through. Gorgeous tribute.
compare? thats chris cornell...laynes equal
+Ax P. That is because Layne is what is referred to as genius, he had something that can't be taught, something special that only a few other human beings posssess. Absolute genius.
+smoothcriminal28 really i disagree with all you guys. Chris Cornell is an absolute genius, look what he has achieved as a musician, fronting SoundGarden, Audioslave and a successful Solo career. Not only as one of the greatest singers of all time but one of the best songwriters, with many of his guitar parts being as iconic as his singing. Cornell is easily an equal of Layne, you cant separate them, i know the argument of the depth of laynes lyrics, which some are masterpieces, yet alot of songs are attributed to his lyric writing when really it was Jerry who wrote it (who is criminally underrated, such an amazing song writer, his solo albums, holy fuckkk). hearing Cornells voice here is amazing, Layne and Chris are well and truly equals in music terms
+jack mcmahon Cornel is arguably the better musician of the two. But vocally, Layne Staley is simply untouchable by any of his peers. The only other rock singer that is on the same plane is Mercury.
+jack mcmahon ...Chris is a better songwriter, singer, and musician than Layne...but Layne, in my opinion, has changed more people lives than Chris ever will. Layne could read a cereal box and leave you feeling stunned. No one would probably know Jerry Cantrell's name if Layne had not sang the songs Cantrell wrote. Cantrell wrote Down in a Hole, but Layne brought it to life in the biggest way. Layne was a better "communicator", if you will.
Beautifull son. Beautifull man. R.I.P. Lord Cornell.
Chris you are so missed. Your soul reaches out and touches all of us forever.
Thank you for sharing. This reminds me of Right Turn from the Alice in Chains ep Sap. This brought tears to my eyes because I think that deep down, Layne was crying out for help in this song. It's pure poetry.
Chris and Layne singing Right Turn is pure bliss
Alice Mudgarden. My favourite band ever. I've searched everyone but haven't come across it ever being played live by all of them during that era. Wish they had just once and someone had recorded it.
Grunge never dies.. RiP Layne and Chris.
Christopher Cornell. world's greatest busker
that's kinda funny. Chris does have that feel of a busker stature here
I love busking
love for Layne! Beautiful. keep the memories aive.
Chris :.( I'm heartbroken..and just...speechless. Send Layne our love. Rest easy, legend. 💔
Tearing up. Miss both Layne and Cornell
RIP legends
My soul hurts... R.I.P
De un grande a otro grande!! Chris & Layne Forever 💜

I'm in tears RIP Chris and Layne. Hope you too are hanging out and singing beautiful songs in heaven.
wow. one of my fav songs. and even one better. one of my favorite singers. doesn't get better than the this. its like a badass cookie double ice cream cone w a smores on top + a double cheeseburger milkshake.lol. r.i.p chris.
you gave this world so much talent and real music. you are the real deal. & fuck you for leaving too soon. r.i.p
Breaks my heart everyday, thanks Chris I'll always know I have a heart and you touch it.
Stop comparing Chris to Layne, they have different styles. I love this version just as much as Layne's.
I love Chris and his talent. I'm so glad this is covered by someone of his stature and background and not some Layne pretender.
Exactly ! Stop comparing greatness to greatness . Just listen to the song And shut the fuck up already . If anything Layne is looking from above and proud as fuck to have Chris sing this !
Chris Cornell is the rock Singer songwriter of my generation. A master lyricist and musician. Metaphorical. Thoughtful. Staley is a good singer. I only liked a couple of the songs that he wrote. Cantrell was the genius behind Alice in Chains.
+Peanutbutter jellyfish (nofrownonme) you do know Layne wrote about 50% of the aic songs right?!?! Man in the box, angry chair, love hate love, nutshell, and I could go on... I love Jerry Cantrell as much as you do and I agree he's a fucking genius but he was not the reason for the greatness of aic... Without Layne Staley we wouldn't know who Jerry Cantrell is unfortunately (and I bought both his solo albums when they came out)
Layne wrote lyrics. the music was all Cantrell. That said, the band should have ended with Layne's death. the magic those two managed together can't be replicated. Jerry tried doing his own thing but it didn't make money.
Thank you, Chris. Layne is truly missed. 😔
Amazing Chris!!! Great tribute!!!
rip. you were a legend. still are. always will be.
The way he sings the chorus is so beautiful! My favorite cover by him
My two favorite vocalists. RIP Layne and Chris
You are really missed Chris. Ur haunting voice is not here to comfort us anymore. Hope u are in a better place now. rest in peace
Chris pays tribute to Layne, plain and simple, those two guys actually had the same voice coach, first Chris then Layne. They sound nothing alike, but they both have the same style, from the pit of they're stomach,on up to the roof of their mouths. They both gave their all and that's what made them great.I know as long as I'm here,I'll be listening, cause I'm addicted and I love them both.RIP Chris and Layne.
Keep coming back. Timeless. RIP.
It's not a comparison, it's a tribute, period! ! ! ! pip Chris and lane, and Kurt, the for God's sake just goes on
RIP Chris Cornell😭
Words cannot do this moment justice. Love this singer and the songwriter.

Awesome Chris! Layne would have approved!
River of Deceit has taken too many down! I didn't know Chris covered Layne's song. Thanks for sharing Ted but it made me go through a box of kleenex 😢
You'll be missed Chris, but your music will live on with your spirit.
