  • Phil Collins performed at Live Aid in front of 72,000 people in Wembley Stadium, London and in front of 100,000 people in the John F. Kennedy Stadium, Philadelphia USA on the 13th July, 1985. Here’s Phil Collins being interviewed backstage. The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. Broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time, the concerts were seen by around 40% of the global population.

Phil Collins was everywhere in the 80s. Whether playing with Genesis or going solo, everything he touched went gold. He produced hit albums for other artists as well as played drums and even toured with others. At Live Aid he was the only one to play both shows (US and UK) via the concord and also managed to play drums with Led Zeppelin. In the 80's, Collins was da man.

Theoretically, it could be done if a person or group played a a short set at 11am in London, boarded a plane at 12:30pm, and landed in Philadelphia 8 hours later (8:30pm in London). It would still only be 3:30pm in Philadelphia when the plane landed. The person or group would even have time for a nap, meal and play an evening set. So, no, it could be done today. Just not as easily.

    legend
Don't put the blame on Phil if you don't know the story
    read his book
the problem came from the full band: Tony who did not like Phil in this moment (Phil said that)
Page was not good enough to play
    etc.
so the problem is a whole problem and so Phil did not want to play because he knew the band was not good so he did not want to play his best
and for Altantic reunion : same problem Page was not good enough (bad notes)
so with a better drummer the story was the same
Phil is an amazing drummer that Robert took for 2 albums which were great and the tour too
but Phil knew the Led Zeppelin album did not play all what we wanted but the problem was not him or not him at all
Page - Thompson were the problem
the fast band without enough rehearsals was the big problem too
they were not ready to play
it was not written as "the big reunion" but just some funny moments

    • @TheAmarok87

No. According to The New York Times, Jackson’s press agent at that time, Norman Winter, stated that Jackson was not able to perform at Live Aid because he was busy with his projects. Norman said that he was “working around the clock in the studio on a project that he's made a major commitment to.''
Norman also said ''Michael is just about living in the studio, rehearsing and recording. I know, what could be more major than Live Aid, but Michael couldn't turn his back on his responsibility to the people he's working with. This affected employment for a lot of people.''

Jackson along with the majority of black american stars boycotted live aid due to some stupid jealousy thing regarding Band aid & USA for Africa, It was extreamly pathetic behaviour from the MJ's & Lional Richie's of this world. The excuse by MJ's man was complete bullshit.. he supposedly couldnt give up one day to perform one song as Paul Mcartney did at Wembley.. there was absolutely no excuse for the snub & those black American stars should be ashamed to this day.. you wld think they would of jumped through hoops to save starving African lives, they didn't & the excuses from said artists down the years have been pathetic!

That's true. 👍Phil was the only one who was ready, willing AND ABLE! Later when they sobered/smartened up, they were so embarrassed and ashamed of themselves they did everything in their power to get their disaster off all tv tapes, but people who taped it live or off the telly had it as proof that it was THEY who had f'ed up!
