It's a great song. I love that Billy includes the extra verse that he wrote for Kirsty on her version.
I was so excited when I heard the extra verse. I’m sure Billy’s performed it like that before, but it was the first time I got to hear it from his mouth.
Yes! @@obelix703
@@obelix703 Billy has performed the extra verse live ever since Kirsty's death. He will say, "This is for Kirsty MacColl!' and everyone cheers. It's a wonderful tribute.
Wow. What a tune. That lyric
"I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
It's wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care" 😢
Yep, my favourite line.
That’s my favourite line of all his songs, ( although some others run it close), sheer poetry.
I have the tea towel!
"when at last it didn't ring / I knew it wasn't you" ❤
Billy was the gig I ever attended as a young teen and he sang this. So many years later and I was so glad to have caught this performance. A song that I’ll never tire off made all the more special by Kirsty’s cover.
Love Billy Bragg & this song is a classic. Lovely man 💜
Love this! Reminds me of university days 1982 - 1986
It's weird seeing Billy sing this on his own... For decades, I've been used to seeing him sing it at the end of a gig whilst being one of a thousand fans shouting along! Always the best community...
British, bittersweet, working class longing set out as poetry - not a dry eye in the house.
Then you add in the song's entire back story - & you think you're heart might actually break.
God bless Billy Bragg.
As a fellow guitarist, respect for basing any song around the F barre.
Fantastic lyrics. Great song
Some songs are melody over meaning. This is pure poetry to music. Timeless. Loved then when it was knew. Love it now. ❤
Billy Bragg RULES !
What a artist I love this with the added verse absolutely quality
Written for/with Kirsty MacColl, RIP, who has a hit with it
Brilliant, looking forward to seeing him in Cardiff on Friday.
Perfect imperfection.
Lovely guitar 🎸 playing ❤🎶🎶🎶
Billy Bragg for President.
Beautiful
The Kirsty Maccoll version, specifically the remix, might be my favorite song ever.
It sounds like Billy mixed back in elements of Kirstys version in to this.
Beautiful
Yes, a new verse at the end??
AIUI, Bragg wrote the extra verse for MacColl to record.
He actually wrote it 😊
absolute classic
Excellent
Awesome as always!
Thank you Billy!
I think I sang this in the shower every single day of my 20s and 30s.
Great version
👏nice
The Bard of Essex
God Bless Billy Bragg.
👏👏👏
Ahhh Kirsty! Miss her so much.
You can find more songs by Billy on my YT channel. Check it out. By the way, I think Billy should tour with a band a lot more often. Violin and trumpet harmonize wonderfully with his voice.
Love the Beatles reference at the end...
😎
E ain't flippin silly, e's blinking Barking Billy. Not mowfin bleedin platitudes, it's flossofee wiv attichewed
He stole x flow
We have a new Holland with victory PVV HAPPY days!!
HA
Glad he learned to play without that fucking capo. Not the best theory man myself, always had to fake it when playing his stuff, I'm a Murkan tenor/alto, blues white boy, just turned 57, been torturing music from many different angles, for years.
Love the tune but cmon Billy boi you've written way better since then.
When will I grow up to be a ‘they’
Billy Prat
This song is an incisive semi protest song.
I had no idea Corbin had no idea how to sing or play guitar
Billy Bragg who says the word Fat is offensive.. he needs to stop eating Mushrooms
Billy who? I only came across this name after reading his comments on Phil Collins (yes THE Phil Collins). Brag apparently criticised Phil’s song ‘Another Day in Paradise’ (with him jumping on the bandwagon not wanting to be left out), insinuating that Phil had used the homelessness theme purely for his own record and needs. Sadly Mr Bragg was unaware of Phil’s constant generous contributions to homeless charities throughout the world. Some people give quietly and anonymously, others ‘Bragg’ about their causes.
You clearly have no idea what Billy Bragg stands for and the context in which to understand this song for example. Billy Bragg has been writing protest songs since before you were born. This song for example is actually about the (disasterous) New England policies of Margaret Thatcher, and a reference that the man in the street doesn't care or understand about those issues. Phill Collins wrote one (1) protest song, Billy Bragg dedicated his whole career to social injustice.
Yes. And you don't understand that Billy Ocean was so into rights for the people who live in the Sea that he called himself Billy Ocean. "When the going gets tough" indeed!
He was such a nuisance politically.
@@OnzeManInKazakhstan
(Disastrous) policies of *Thatcher?*
I'd have her back at the drop of a rocket propelled lead hat!
She was the last leader with the balls to stand up to the actually *(Disastrous,)* deluded, pervasive & pernicious policies of the Left who's skeletal death hand has wrought so much havoc & misery to this once great land!
People like you are going to have a *LOT* to answer for in coming years & we are going to get those answers!
Btw, This is no "Class war" comment with me on the *Right* (in both senses.) I was actually very good friends with Bill's brother David, I went to school with him, so know all about the social dynamic Billy grew up in.
I don't want to tell the truth but god this is utter shite
Absolute dinosaur
Shame he was such a nuisance politically.
If his brother Dave sees this, I hope you are keeping well.
Great song. Shame about Bragg's centrist politics. Not a peep from Billy supporting the Palestinians in Gaza...
Fuck me imagine having to have a public opinion on every thing and being judged on not having on how tiresome.
@@Ziggy_Shakespeare Bragg has been an outspoken campaigner for the Labour party throughout his whole career. That means he cannot be a socialist. Israel has been slaughtering thousands of Palestinian children since the second week of October; it is the most pressing issue in British politics and the most controversial within the Labour party... yet he is still silent. The most logical conclusion is that he supports the Zionists and Keir Starmer, he sees that he is wildly out of touch with his own audience, and so he does not want to offend either camp. Shame on him.
He doesn't want to upset his Zionistzzz pay masters!
what are you talking about, he's tweeted several times and retweeted dozens of things in support of the Palestinians?
what are you talking about? he has publicly expressed support for the palestinian people on his social media. all it takes is a scroll to find that out.
..never was impressed with this 'local pub act' made good.
Cool story. I imagine the feeling is mutual.
You just haven't listened properly.
@@stellajayne How could you possibly know??
@@harveythompson1756 Trust me, I just do.
If you be a good boy, follow the establishments 'rules', don't mention Israeli genocide, become a Fabian member and still act like a rebellious Marxist Art student (without a cause), then you will be put and kept on a platform for as long as you want, even if you're less talented than Liam Gallagher...which is some achievement in itself!
Although a Morrissey fan I do think Billy is a good musician I cannot dislike his skill as a song writer and his book on skiffle is good, I just wish he would stop going on about socialism all the time.lol.
Yeah all those people mixing politics and music. Shut up The Clash, Marley, Specials, Lennon, Public Enemy, RATM....etc etc...
Buffoon.
Don't we all! 😂👍
Goose bumps.
